It is a lot like Oregon Trail in space (which is a good thing), though really just in the basic concept, not in the particular mechanics. You have a destination to reach and a series of stops along the way to try and get the supplies you need. That supply management is pretty complex. There are multiple resources that you always need to travel, and a bunch of others that you'll need to solve problems along the way. Prices and availability differ at every stop you make, so you have to weigh the cost of stocking up now vs. later, or whether's it's worth taking risks for supplies instead of purchasing them. The game is relaxing. There is plenty to do and think through at any stop, but no time pressure. The sound effects are excellent: retro but pleasant. Your ship beeps and hums while your crew works at their stations and you review trade data. The mini-games are simple and fun, but they also tie into the resource management. I haven't played for very long yet, but there seems to be a lot of variety to the activities and events at planets and while travelling. Some of them require you to make choices or fight off pirates, others just add some Star Trekkian flavor to the universe. The space combat and the cut scenes both give me a strong Wing Commander vibe, though this game looks a lot better than the original WC.
This is criminal. The game is not being talked about, and that's a crime. I give this the highest rating I can possibly give. 10/10. Would die again, and I shall.
It's a bit too oregon trail.
what a good time! this takes inspiration from some things you'd not expect would go together but actually super do go together (blake stone/corridor 7/wolf3d, star trek 25th anniversary, star control/strange adventures in infinite space, oregon trail, etc.). the visuals/audio and writing are a blast. the pixel art establishing shots and the animated planet shaders are so good please make more games zotnip!!!
But honestly, Zotnip... it would deserve a thumb down for having no event solved by swinging a mop. Cheers, that was cosmocool.

The art is charming, but the gameplay is... well, pretty boring. It's just random chance what happens to you, and it's up to what stuff you bought before that whether or not you can deal with the stuff that happens to you. Yay? One random encounter was some pirates, which put me into a fight reminiscent of the original Wing Commander, which was unexpected and delightful. But, I mean, why bother with the rest of the gameplay mechanism of "random bull**** happened, hope you were prepared" when you have that? And apparently there are first person shooter sections, though I didn't hit any. Don't bury the good bits of your game in boring, stupid filler!
I wanted to like it but I ran into a lot of bugs that kept halting my progress.
I can't praise this game enough! I don't know how long I will be playing it, but as others have mentioned, it is well worth the money, even if only for a short time. But, believe me, I will play this again! This brings so much nostalgia back, and they did a fantastic job on it! And the most important reason for me to buy: finally an action game (which is more than pong or arcade volleyball) that can completely be played on the keyboard, without a mouse or joystick, and does a good job with these keyboard controls. That alone was enough reason for me to buy as I am a laptop gamer. This is a good developer, and I hope to see more from him although I don't see what he can do after this game.
