It is odd for me to recommend this game... First thing I want to say : it is NOT for everyone. The game is VERY dark, violent, gory, and it is even worse if you are an adult who can understand the psychological perspective out of it. Some teenagers may find it "funny because gory", and if that's the case, they didn't understand the message out of this game. It is a very sad story. And it is even sadder when you can relate to it - which is my case. But somehow, the best way to heal from some traumatic experience is to face them. And this game helped me to face them, that's the magic of video games like this. The meaning of this game can only be unfolded if you get the "good ending". There is some people on this planet who born with a curse : their parents / grandparents / bloodline karmic debts. Because some parents are too coward to face it, they pass it on to their children, which makes cycle of suffering for the descendants. But one day, one of the children says "enough of this" and is willing to do the dirty work to end this suffering. It takes a lot of guts (no pun intended), courage and will to break those cycles. But for their own sake, those must go into hell, face their demons, and proove their innocence by being authentic, genuine, with a fighting spirit. Not by sacrifying ourselves. Just by resending the responsibility to the responsible. We are not our parent's / grandparent's / ancestor's mistakes, and we must NOT pay for them. The creator of this game, Larry Childress, must have tone of knowledge about symbolism, psychology, the occult, because this game really hit hard home. Some people might say that "he is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up to come up with such ideas for a game", I would say that he knew what he was doing and probably knew that it would help some people, such as me. Apparently, there is a remake version in progress, and I'm pretty sure it is gonna be even worse than this version of the game. I'll still play it, because I find the story well written, way much more than what horror movies are showing us today. It has depths. It has a meaning. It has a purpose. Message for Larry Childress : Sir, THANK YOU. This game helped me to open my eyes on many things, especially regarding "my genitor" (I can't even call him "father" today, this is why I'm gonna change my last name to carry my mother's name instead of his). Take your time for the remake, as long as you make it as good, difficult, efficient and dark as the original one, but I have ZERO doubt about your talent on video games creation. Thank you again, you helped me to face some of my demons, and now I can call myself a free man, who walk towards the light and leave the darkness behind.
The death scenes do NOT need to be doing all that 😭😭 Also are you TRYING to give me a bad hand cramp
wow, man. even the true ending made me sad. masterfully done. part two is a strong recommend
An indifferent (slightly negative-leaning) opinion regarding Part 1 of House of Velez. While I enjoyed the impressive voice acting and retro Resident Evil-esque aesthetic of House of Velez, the gameplay itself was incredibly tedious and removed the element of suspense and horror from the game entirely. As a matter of fact, I think the true horror of this game were the mechanics. Playing Twister with the amount of buttons needed to press while hiding became increasingly challenging and less fear-inducing with each passing death. Moreover, I strongly believe that the inescapable chase of the enormous monster-doll which what lead me to not completing Part 1 was due to a game bug. As I attempt each QTE, I am catapulted very closely to the antagonist, noticing myself backing up into the mouth of the doll which inevitably kills me every time. On the other hand, I must commend the effort of this game being constructed by a one-man studio; kudos to you. If you enjoy a REAL challenge, then I implore you to support an indie game developer and give this a go (you will most likely do a lot better than I did) and play this game... maybe I'm just terrible at it?!
This is a special game because it is from an indie one man studio which deserves mad props. You can tell the passion that went into this game through its only worthwhile aspect: the death scenes. However, that is the only aspect in which I can recommend this game for. The voice acting of the rich lady you play as is a professional voice actor and she really shines in this game as truly excellent. The company that did the sound effects made good sounds, but the sounding mixing in this game is horrendously terrible. Everything is either too quite or too loud and it often overlaps simultaneously. The visuals are disturbing and creative which is nice to see. It's a very short game that gets dragged out due to the insanely clunky controls and terrible game mechanics which are responsible for most of your unintended deaths. However, this game has save anywhere and you're here to see this lady get wrecked in wild ways. To that end, the game is really only worth playing if you're a sicko like me.

First of all part 1 is really short regardless to be a game. So buy it knowing that's a thing. Thoroughly i've never seen a game has this kind of really creative and gruesome death animations ever and that's a bit rare to create a sidescroller game like this. It's really unique in every aspect of it so without giving a shot i don't think you'll ever have a proper opinion about it.
Within the first few minutes of playing this, I felt like I was in 1995, which is a great thing. However, once the action really got going, I felt like I was in 1995, which is not a great thing. You see, the dev did a stupendous job in creating the right kind of atmosphere for what this game needed to be. However, the controls and gameplay did not need to follow suit, and should have been a bit more modernized. While I have been through this with games 30 years ago, it was always the thing that held them back. When making a game that is a clear homage to the horror of that era, you should certainly pull from its strengths, but equally, you should try to improve on its weaknesses. That being said, I appreciate the effort here and I am honestly torn, as the visuals and the feelings this generates are authentic and genuine to its inspirations.
Eerie and thrilling with excellent visual design. The unfamiliar controls add to the unique character of the game.
