Siren and Silent Hill had a baby, even the soundtrack reminded me of Akira Yamaoka, 8/10.
Code Hill
Students from Xlab School have created their debut project, which is totally based on the aesthetics of PS1 games. Fragile Reflection immerses you in an era beyond time, where the kneaded mining town of Nankofuraku has become a ghost town. The special feature of the setting is that the developers have delved into the topic of mirror reality. You are traveling not through one parallel dimension, but through two at once, switching them with the help of a plot-important amulet. The young girl Kario will have to face the ghosts of the past, both literally and figuratively. The dramatic story makes you think about how important it is to appreciate what you have and be able to part with it. Behind the facade of "the meaning of life" lies a storyline completely inspired by Silent Hill, when the narrative is entirely based on the introspection of the main character. However, it is important to understand that there are not many notes and minor characters in the game that would fit into the scale of this small game. For the most part, the developers reveal the problems of Kario's past, while the rest of the characters are just part of the myths and mysteries that are scattered throughout the game in the form of short dialogues and notes. Do not expect taboo topics, philosophical arguments and grounds for deep analysis from this game. The style of Russian poetry and self-expression makes it possible for Fragile Reflection to tell your story, as if you are playing a film adaptation of poetry or prose, in which you are a personal participant. The magnificent musical accompaniment, inspired by the work of Akira Yamaoko, combines industrial, ambient, dreampunk and even a bit of syntwave (in the final battle). All this really stimulates the desire to continue playing, as good music is an integral part of any horror. The city affected by the anomaly will be split by some kind of dark energy that oozes out of the walls and penetrates them. At such moments, the game changes its style and enhances the gloominess of the atmosphere. But it's important to understand that this game was created by a small team, so not everything is perfect in terms of gameplay and level design. The story company is divided into 3 sections for conducting research. Nankofuraku City, hospital and mine. Small maps try their best to compensate for their size with winding routes between buildings. All this should create a sense of infrastructure, but the environment contrasts too much with each other, which turns obvious tasks into incomprehensible ones. Since Fragile Reflection is based on the game design of adventure games for PS1, some elements will work depending on your orientation on the terrain. For example, to find out where to use fireworks with matches, it took me a very long time to run around the hospital and accidentally find the answer to this question. The game also has very clumsily arranged story scenarios that work in a strict sequence, but at the same time you can complete several tasks at the same time and just forget where you started. The "vein-shaped" and square graphics for PS1, which the Spectra team managed to create using the Unity engine during a long study of the levels, can create an atmosphere or eventually tire. The developers needed to take into account that such a style should correspond to a single visual format so that the textures would not be excessively contrasting and otherwise would not cause a feeling of feverish sleep. The mechanics of movement and shooting were performed at a very low level, as the controls were clearly adapted to the gamepad. Playing on the keyboard and mouse, I had the feeling that I was not playing as a young Japanese girl, but controlling Godzilla. The shooting mechanics are the only thing that feels like it should be inspired by Resident Evil, but there are a couple of weird moments. You can destroy all the monsters on the level, as you will always find ammunition and resources in the conservation rooms and utility rooms. But after a full check, I found that the locations were completely empty, which turned the process of exploring them into a solo walk with full gear. At such moments, I had the feeling that I was playing a third-person shooter, not Survival horror, which, by the way, was not the case in the best Silent Hill games. An interesting detail was the ability to avoid collisions with enemies, which makes sense to save ammunition for bosses. But, it's important to note that boss fights themselves are very easy and are aimed at your attentiveness, not wasting ammo, which I consider a compromise solution. In a bad scenario, Fragile Reflection can turn out to be a cheap third-person shooter, which it can theoretically become if you rely a lot on shooting. Taking into account the slow movement of the camera and the inconvenient aiming system, the approach to a more pacifist style of the game is fully justified. From the technical side, everything was done pretty well, as some bugs and glitches have been fixed since the release. But, unfortunately, the sound still suffers from overload, and often the music drowns out the characters' speech. Periodically, the sound disappears completely, which is fixed by restarting the save, but at the moment this problem still persists. The game also has a very funny voice acting, which refers to poor-quality English translations of old Japanese games. Whether this was done on purpose or not, we probably won't find out. Fans of classic horror games from the PS1, PS2, and Gamecube eras won't really like Fragile Reflection because of its frankly amateur production. But, on the other hand, for connoisseurs of atmospheric games of the old era and just fans of indie horror, the debut project of the Spectra team may seem like a real revelation. It's far from a perfect game, with uneven level design, raw shooting mechanics, and sometimes sloppy graphics. However, the idea, style, excellent music and relatively short duration set this game apart from the mass of similar releases.
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare.
I'll always give a positive review to support small developers, but this was extremely unpolished. It's sad because the art direction and vibes are really nice, but this just isn't a finished game. Missing audio everywhere, animations playing incorrectly, assets loading incorrectly, inconsistent enemy behavior. It's playable, but it's not enjoyable. If you buy this, be prepared for jank.
its Silent Hill F Demake. Needs a few patches but overall its a solid experience. The combat has some jank but it usually works in your favor with hit detection. Atmosphere is top notch. It has the silent hill mystery vibe to it with characters, fog, small town, detailed map, random weapons, etc.
Fragile Reflection by Spectra team is a survival horror experience that deliberately embraces the tone and structure of classic genre titles while weaving in its own psychological and cultural identity. Set in a quiet rural town that has been overtaken by an unnatural phenomenon, the game focuses less on spectacle and more on sustained tension, gradually pulling the player into a world that feels both familiar and deeply unsettling. From the opening moments, it establishes a mood of unease that rarely lets up, relying on atmosphere and slow-building dread rather than sudden shocks. The story centers on Kario Ito, a young woman who returns to her hometown after receiving a disturbing message, only to find the environment warped by a mysterious force known as Reflection. This parallel dimension overlaps with reality, distorting spaces and preserving fragments of past emotions and events. As the player progresses, the narrative unfolds through exploration, environmental clues, and scattered pieces of information rather than direct exposition. This approach gives the story a fragmented, almost dreamlike quality, encouraging players to piece together the truth rather than having it explicitly explained. Themes of memory, identity, and perception are woven throughout, giving the narrative a more introspective tone than many traditional horror games. Gameplay follows a familiar survival horror formula, combining exploration, puzzle-solving, and limited combat. Movement through the environment is cautious and deliberate, with players constantly searching for items, keys, and clues that allow them to progress further. Resources are scarce, and this scarcity plays a key role in maintaining tension. Every encounter carries weight, as using too many supplies early on can leave the player vulnerable later. Combat is present but intentionally restrained, functioning more as a defensive tool than a primary focus. Encounters are designed to be tense rather than empowering, reinforcing the sense of vulnerability that defines the experience. One of the game’s more distinctive mechanics is its use of the Reflection dimension. Players can shift between layers of reality, using this ability to solve puzzles, access hidden areas, and uncover additional narrative elements. This system adds depth to exploration, as players must consider how spaces change between dimensions and how actions in one layer affect the other. When used effectively, it enhances both gameplay and storytelling, creating moments where the environment itself becomes part of the puzzle. However, there are times when the transitions can feel unclear, which may lead to confusion during certain sections. The pacing is intentionally slow, emphasizing atmosphere over constant action. The game encourages careful movement and observation, allowing tension to build gradually as players explore its environments. This methodical approach works well in establishing mood, but it can also make certain segments feel prolonged, especially when backtracking is required. The balance between exploration and progression is generally effective, though players who prefer a faster pace may find the experience somewhat drawn out. Visually, Fragile Reflection adopts a retro-inspired style that pays homage to classic survival horror while incorporating modern refinements in control and camera handling. The environments are dark and moody, with lighting playing a crucial role in shaping the overall atmosphere. Traditional Japanese elements are integrated into the design, giving the setting a distinct identity that sets it apart from more generic horror environments. While the graphics are not technically advanced, they are consistent and effective in supporting the tone of the game. Sound design is a standout element, contributing significantly to the sense of immersion. Ambient noises, distant echoes, and subtle audio cues create a constant feeling of unease, even when no immediate threat is present. The soundtrack is understated, often giving way to silence or minimal soundscapes that heighten tension. This careful use of audio ensures that the player remains alert, as even small changes in sound can signal danger or reveal hidden elements within the environment. Despite its strengths, the game does have limitations that may affect its overall appeal. The retro design approach, while intentional, brings with it some of the genre’s older drawbacks, including occasional stiffness in interactions and a reliance on repetition in certain gameplay loops. Combat, while functional, lacks variety and may become less engaging over time. Additionally, the focus on slow exploration and puzzle-solving may not resonate with players who prefer more action-driven experiences. In the end, Fragile Reflection succeeds as a focused and atmospheric survival horror title that prioritizes mood, tension, and thematic depth over mechanical complexity. It offers a deliberate and immersive experience that rewards patience and attention to detail, making it particularly appealing to fans of classic horror design. While it may not fully overcome the limitations of its retro inspirations, it delivers a compelling journey through a haunting world that lingers long after the experience ends. Rating: 7/10
