About
Explore nightmare worlds and search for understanding in this PSX inspired dungeon crawler. Influenced by King's Field, Dark Souls, Silent Hill, True Events, and Delusion.
You wake up in a locked prison cell. Everything is red. On the wall of the cell is a mirror, and when you look into it, you see the truth. Your cell unlocks, but you're far from free. Explore a non-linear world with interconnected level design, each space more dream-like than the last. Talk to NPCs or slay them. Read the signs or ignore them. Take the path set for you or find another. Read a bunch of scripture against your will. Interpret its lack of meaning. Worry about the mental health of another. Accept there's nothing you can do for them.
No dodging, no parrying, no blocking, no rolling. You aren't a hardened knight or agile hunter, you are a frail prisoner, and escape is your only hope. Fight monsters, if you want. I know that's what you expect, so go ahead. A mediocre variety of enemies for you to press the attack button at. Experience multiple endings, make choices, do it all differently. Maybe then you'll understand.
Go into the options menu and see that you can change the resolution. Accept that 1024x768 is the way it was meant to be.
I'm there waiting for you.

I've never been into King's Field, but I know how it looks and plays like. While Hope Deferred is most certanly inspired by it, I was absolutely sucked in. The game is hard, and it doesn't take you by the hand, yet the posibility to save at any moment is the sole reason I managed to beat it, through trial and error. Well, I mean I reached and ending. Not the good one. But considering the amount of doors still locked (and the map the dev drawn showing the levels), I'm not even sure I saw half of the game. The atmosphere is incredible and it definitely manages that cryptic yet mystical feel I dig so much. Unfortunately for me, I'm not really built for this kind of game. If I managed to find a Moonlight Sword, open three shortcuts in the hub at the center of the four main levels, and get to the "God" of the game, it was mostly by chance. Half the time, I had no real clue what I was supposed to do or where I was supposed to go. But I guess that's part of the experience. I only wish some guy made a playthrough on Youtube to showcase every nook and cranny or even just the endings, but this dark gem is way to obscure for this unfortunately. Maybe some day I would start it over, if I manage to remember to avoid to unecessarily kill every NPC I meet. If the dev could setup cloud saves it would be awesome too. But as of now, I can only recommend other to try that insane experience. Juste a side note: If you play through Proton (no matter which build), there is a bug that makes some bridges and planks not crossable, unless you slide along one of the edges. And some bridges/planks are very hard to pass because of this.

Hope Deferred explores the darkest reaches of the mind, the human experience and how unfair circumstances and unfortunate events can completely alter the course of someone's life. It is morbid and at times uncomfortable, yet deeply interesting as a result. And just when all hope is lost, the game presents a joke which makes you laugh and for a moment you forget the horror's you were just mere moments ago presented with. All this is to say that the game feels like a deeply personal insight into someone's mind. Outside of the narrative, it is a well made First Person RPG made on an absolutely archaic engine and inherits all its technical issues as a result. However it works on a controller, runs smoothly and the developer thinks outside the box to create some truly interesting levels. The level design is winding with many shortcuts and secrets. I was actually amazed at some of the shortcuts. It is a very unguided experience so exploration is incredibly rewarding. The only thing I disliked was some of the platforming segments which are rare enough to not have impacted my experience.
This game although limited for the style and age of the engine does have a somewhat compelling story. Things dont mesh together how you think they do but have deeper meaning thats fun to figure out.
its really spooky and man those jump scare signs got me freaked me out its really hard to focus i keep thinking something is gonna jump scare me from the darkness that surrounds me
Hope Deferred is a psychological horror game that keeps you on edge. The eerie, retro-style dungeons create a strange but intriguing world to explore. Puzzles are challenging, and the slow combat makes sneaking past enemies feel tense. While the gameplay can get repetitive, the creepy atmosphere and unique nightmare setting make it an exciting experience for horror RPG fans.
This game is such an "Excruciatingly long-winded text that overshares personal information which fully elucidates the narrative motif without subtlety, paradoxically displayed on a small wooden sign" - and thats amazing.
Absolutely psychotic.
Fells like something that J. King-Spooner would cook if he was into esoteric 20-year-old Japanese game engines.
Good
Edit: For the love of beauty and kindness, don't play the pacifist route. Just pretend it doesn't exist. Seriously, you'll regret it. I've half a mind to remove the positive rating, but I'm doing the kind thing and giving the game way more leeway than it deserves by ignoring the pacifist route. This is certainly an interesting game. The store page does not really do it justice, in my opinion, because it does not establish that this is pretty much a King's Field game. It has secrets, the Sword of Moonlight (which is super OP), levels with lots of locked doors and shortcuts, boss fights, and NPCs with lots of depressing things to say. I like King's Field, so I readily found this game engaging. Those who do not enjoy the gameplay of King's Field would probably be turned away by the gameplay on offer. I am ambivalent on the story. On one hand, it is presented in a compelling way. On the other hand, the more I played, the more it felt like most of the text in the game was just the creator talking to me about their real life through the characters. I do not know anything about them, but the game seems pretty trans and very depressing. To be honest, having a random person oversharing to me about the awfulness of their upbringing is not really what I enjoy in horror game narratives, and the constant references and fourth-wall breaks lessened my immersion and investment in the story; the prevalence of post-modernism has done irreparable damage to authenticity and my ability to get invested in most narratives utilising its tropes. Overall, this game is a fun KF-style romp through some well-designed and imaginative environments, but I was a bit disappointed regarding its horror components and narrative. I honestly think Shadow Tower is a more effective, and probably more compelling, horror game.
