This is a great game. I'm not a huge fan of the writing, but from a strictly gameplay perspective, you've got all the elements here that make games like ALTTP great. A massive open world to explore, really great and tough combat. Plenty of hours of gameplay, interesting and unique enemies and bosses! Thumbs up!
What a great game! The art, sound and humor makes it a welcome addition to anyone that loves the old Zelda games on SNES. The main character reminds me of Invader Zim (which makes it even better). Streamed this tonight and have enjoyed every moment of it! Please check this game out.
Every once in a while you find a real gem of a game that is Rack N Ruin. Simply a darn fun action spell flinging game in beautifully painted world. Be an evil little demon hell bent on corrupting the world of Galia, and during it all not only seeing all the fantasy tropes and clichés, but embrace them and see them taken to one heck of a funny extreme. It's exceedingly fun; more so than I thought it could be. The game play starts off slow is it teaches you a basic fireball spell, and how to corrupt the first bit of land. Of course this is all thanks to a little ghost; a former demon that tried the very same things you did. So like Navi from Zelda the bugger follows you about, and although not as annoying we can finally put an end to him later on by having him banished. If only that was possible with Navi.... As you progress you find out that a Champion is on a quest to find some legendary items to trap you, typical of heroes trying to ruin fun. So in a flip of scenarios you're going to try and kill them before that's all possible. Each area is very unique, the music great and of course the art style wonderful and whimsical. Even after you corrupt the land the music and art stay great, although look like something from a Tim Burton movie at times. The boss battles are extremely fun although can be very punishing if you didn't backtrack at times and explore as much as possible. So some advice: explore everything thoroughly. Especially if you've corrupted the land. I've missed so many part because of that, which I only discovered after getting stuck on a puzzle and going back. The combat can get very hectic, as ole Rack is not the most nimble or strongest of demons, so you have to be sure to read the descriptions of your items and use them to your fullest. The main crutch of the game for me is the puzzles. Often times obviously easy that you might miss something, some are so darn convoluted that you might spend and hour backtracking through areas trying to find something to help. Thankfully there aren't too many, and are usually only needed at major checkpoints for areas, which is where they can become very annoying and break your momentum. Little Rack also doesn't move very precisely, it's not an issue most of the times; but on occasions you might need to navigate a tight area where touching something means death. This is where the little massive head demon is the weakest, he simply can't make tiny movements easily. Although I was playing with a 360 controller so this might be the culprit. Overall I simply adore the game. The art and music is sublime and whimsical; even when dark and supposedly evil. It always tries to maintain its humour, and as such stays extremely fun throughout its story despite the issues I've mentioned. Considering it's low price I'd easily recommend it to folks that want to try a be evil fantasy spell flinger. PC Gameplay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfaQ7SNd6rY
Mixed. You should know going into it that there are some action scenes (such as boss fights and other bullet-hell-like scenarios), but most of the time will be spent exploring, figuring out puzzles, and looking for secrets. Much of this is enjoyable, but sometimes it is tedious. I almost quit before finishing on a few occasions. There were several instances where I felt I was at a dead end. I completed the same dungeon 3 times because I had not yet found the boss room and had to exit. One of those hidden gems on Steam. I like short reviews so if you want more indepth then, look for another one. This review might change later down the road. In Rack N Ruin you take control of the demon Rack, to start the apocalypse, because why not? The handcrafted art is pleasing to look at and contrary to the story of the game, it's got a fairly cutesy art style. Combat is fluid, can get repetitive at times, but for the most part it's a lot of fun if you like the top-down, twin-stick shooter like games. Good and wide ranging soundtrack. The dialogue is just funny if you like the jokes used, if you don't then sadly, you're probably gonna get tired of the dialogue. Overall, I recommend this game to anyone.
Artistically amazing, but tedious. I'd rather watch somebody play it on Youtube. The game's got really outstanding artwork and soundtrack. It's stunning, really. Sadly, the actual gameplay is more than boring. You basically spend half your time walking around in pointlessly vast areas, trying to find whatever you have to find in there, and the other half "fighting". By which I mean "holding down the lock and fire buttons and moving around until the enemies die". The shmup-like bullet patterns could have made it interesting. But you have so much health and ways to heal up, and enemies do so little damage, that it's just really hard to lose. It's easy and repetitive. Probably good for gifting your kids, but stay away if you like feeling challenged even a little bit.
The biggest travesty about this game is that the rightfully negative reviews of it may dissuade future developers from making a villain-based twin stick shooter action role playing gaming when the problem was entirely the execution and not the concept. Also the programmers of the Linux port are absolutely tard'd. They hardcoded "\" into the saving. So instead of a savefile named
slot_3.rnrsave
in a folder called
Rack n Ruin
in a folder called
Lifespark Entertainment
in my home folder's app data spot
.config
, I have a single file called
.config\\Lifespark Entertainment\\Rack n Ruin\\slot_3.rnrsav
in my home. That is not acceptable.
First up, most of what this game does is GREAT - the graphics are pretty, there's a tonne of content and it's fun. So why "Not Recommended"? The game fails to explain it's puzzle mechanics and they don't always make sense. Whenever I've gotten stuck, the solution has never been an "Oh that's clever" moment - it's always been a "Why did that work" or "I didn't even know I could do that" moment :( Furthermore, the game often offers multiple paths where some are (or appear to be) unsolveable 'yet' - but are they, or have you just failed to guess the mechanics? This leads to a lot of walking around trying stuff (through respawning enemies) and a general feeling of frustration and annoyance. It's a shame, because much of what the game does is great, but I got tired of guessing whether I had the thing I needed or not or whether that block was 1 pixel out of place or why that thing didn't do the thing it did before and ahhhhhhhhhhhhh........ YMMV but after a couple of hours I realised I'd had enough of it's illogical and guesswork laden puzzles and quit...
