There are quite a lot of good things in this game. The Lovecraft story is well used and expanded, the art is great, there is non-linearity and reactivity. But it all drowns in the bog of survival micromanagement. I like games like Quest for Glory with character management options, but here it's too much. You will endlessly walk around a couple of the same scenes, watch unskippable animations, buy food, eat food, study, buy pills, take pills, pixel-hunt for books in the library, go to sleep (through 3 mandatory screens), and do lots of other tedious things. Not too bad if the game takes place over the course of a week, right? Well, the game is 60 days long! This is an absurd length, considering there are not that many story beats. It makes the game both tedious and slow, with mindless clicking and busywork overwhelming the fun parts. Which is a shame, because there are meaningful things to do differently on a second playthrough, but the thought of tucking Walter into bed another 60 times drained my sanity faster than all Lovecraftian horrors ever could.
The survival elements ruin the game. There are things that are well done, like the setting and atmosphere, but that's it. You'll spend so much time and money trying to prevent starvation, getting sick, and sleep deprivation that you'll have no time or money for anything else. The weekly allowance and money you earn from chores isn't nearly enough, so half the time you'll be in poor health and losing sanity. And even when you buy items to help, like a raincoat or thermal underwear, they don't seem to prevent you from freezing or catching a cold. In 4 hours of playtime I've accomplished very little and the story has barely progressed. This game is just a chore to play, not fun or mentally engaging at all.
A fantastic and relevant exploration of the fact that Lovecraftian deities and haunted houses are not nearly as frightening as trying to balance studying, rest and eating as a broke college student. If you've ever thought "man I like horror point and clicks but I wish they had the calendar and life sim and social stat mechanics of Persona but were also a thousand times more stressful", this is the game for you. If you've never thought that, try it anyway.
This is a interesting one... The survival mechanics of everyday life make it very... different, but interesting to me. The Lovecraftian horror that slowly creeps into your life. Will you try to continue your studies until the horror can no longer be ignored, or will you confront the dark truth that will slowly consume your mind? You can feel the love and passion for the horror genre in every aspect. Highly recommended for fans of Lovecraft, point-and-click adventures, and slow-paced games.
Huge disappointment. You pass most of your time having to find food, medicine, planks, study, light fires and fight the rain. 1h of playtime and all that happened is a rat visit.
Very well made game! It captures the feeling of the novel plus allows one to make a lot of small decison that eventually add up and determine the fate of the main character. One point of notice: the game does not really hold your hand so you need to pay attention on how to play more effectively. While a bit frustrating at first, it lends it self very well for multiple playthroughs.
I rated this as a recommend, but I do have mixed feelings about it. I have been a huge point and click adventure game lover, since the first Monkey Island released ages ago. I also love the Lovecraftian horror themes. In the sense that this game is where those two things meet, for that alone I recommend it. The issues I had with the game were a lot of the time gated puzzles that you can miss out on if you don’t time it right within the day of the week or sequence it right before a certain point in the game. That, I am not a fan of. Overall though, it’s definitely worth playing. The game clocked in for me at around 7.5 hours, you can easily get more out of it if you replay to complete everything. Hopefully that gives you a sense of the price point that is best for you. If you would like to watch a play through, for whatever reason, please consider watching mine here: https://youtu.be/Xje0Bfdisn0 If you don’t mind subscribing to my channel (it’s free), please do. I am always trying to grow support, and yours would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Lovecraft is hard to adapt, especially into movies or videogames, but this game completely nails it. It might be one of the best Lovecraft adaptations there are. I'm really not a Point&Click-Adventure-guy - I never played that genre much, back in the day - so I have to admit that it can be a rather hard game and can be very stressful (which is a good thing at the same time). Any Lovecraft-Fan oughta play this!
Its one of the best H.P.Lovecraft Games i ever played. Please give me more of those Games with such gravic and the universe of the Chuthulu Mythos.
