About
Bad Dream: Purgatory is a surreal point and click game set in an abandoned and forgotten project, filled with unused characters from a cancelled game. These characters are trapped in a state of limbo, suspended in nothingness without any purpose or direction. It's up to you to decide their fate and give them the meaning they so desperately crave. "You can't die if you've never lived" - but what if you only exist as a first thought, a person without any depth?
Unlike previous Bad Dream games, Purgatory is presented in a side-scrolling format giving players a more immersive and personal experience. The artstyle is simplistic, with hand-drawn illustrations that perfectly capture the game's atmosphere.
Important: The game has a full Point & Click mode with a static camera.
The game consists of three chapters. Two of them (the introductory one and the simplified ending) are linear. The open world is non-linear and includes all achievements and a "true ending."
Game Features:
A non-linear chapter allowing you to hunt for secrets and achievements
Two modes of gameplay (side-scrolling or static camera)
Interactive environment
Sound environments - SFX sound different in different rooms (echo, muffled sound, etc.)
Custom music and sound effects ( I learned how to compose my own music and I bought a microphone to record my own SFX )
Artstyle - I learned how to draw as well :P
A game made by one person - Guys. I even drew my own fonts :P To be fair I wasn't able to record ALL SFX myself, but other than that I made this game alone. Btw. NO AI
This is version 2.0, released in July 2026. It includes a multitude of changes, improvements, and fixes. The biggest one is the switch from 2.5D to side-scrolling mode.
(The first version is still available for download as the "old version" - tutorial in the pinned post)

制作人又在自我突破了。剧情和《高烧》有联系,初期是线性固定展开,后续号称开放世界,不知道具体咋整。 主视角还是有点晕的,觉得走路慢可以开菜单改行走速度。
Interesting idea overall (what happens to half-formed ideas that are left to rot?), but I could not enjoy this game. I found the game controls very awkward and the game play confusing. However, what made me really dislike this game was the open-world portion that unlocks after you complete the first portion of the game. Although I applaud the unique take on the choose-your-own-adventure idea, there are simply too many ways to get suddenly and irrevocably stuck in the open-world portion because of actions that have unforeseeable consequences--especially when items unexpectedly have only one use. I don't want to give away too many details of the game, but you can frequently find yourself suddenly unable to progress in any way because there is one (and only one) object that will allow you to do so, but you cannot get it. When that happens, you need to start over abruptly and retrace your steps. There are simply too many ways for this to happen and I ended up getting so annoyed that I simply stopped playing. Not my cup of tea at all. Again, interesting idea. Perhaps a little too close to purgatory in execution (although perhaps that is the point?)...
Good game, but mixed feelings. I like the style of this game and the 3D-ish nature of it, and it also feels more like an older Bad Dream game than Fever did, but the freedom of the open world was very frustrating. This game is split between a linear story mode and a free open world, and I liked the linear story and continued to enjoy the open world until I realized I was making absolutely no progress toward anything. I could dig my own grave at the end, sure, but that isn't what I'm supposed to be doing. The coins seemed to be telling me I was going in the right direction, but then it also seems like there isn't much you can do with them in the end. Basically, most of my frustration boils down to having no indicator of whether I'm heading in the right direction or if I'm totally doing the wrong thing. I still recommend this game because I enjoyed what playtime I had, and I know that others may also enjoy spending more hours trying to find achievements. However, I am not that person. Recommended: if you are a completionist, are okay with a shorter experience, or are better at puzzle solving than I am.
I've enjoyed many of this author's other games, but this one did not hit with me at all. Perhaps it's the fact this is first person rather than Point & Click. The whole game loop was, basically, any time I did anything, gained any item, or used an item, I found myself walking in a loop between screens looking to see if someone moved or if any of the 25 usable objects/people would accept the item. By the end I even turned up my walking speed to max just so this would happen faster. Luckily, the game doesn't force you to manually try using objects on objects. The game is quite pretty, and I don't feel like the author was trying to fleece me, so I won't be refunding the purchase or anything. This one just wasn't for me.
Bad Dream: Purgatory takes 2 steps forward, and one step backwards, off a cliff. The change from 2D point & click to first person 3D point & click is VERY refreshing, and makes discovering hidden things more fun. I also like the continued narrative from the previous game, Bad Dream: Fever, that the world is very basic because the world that you play in this game is the writers quickly drawn, discarded and forgotten ideas. I also like the references to previous games, as is standard. The scarecrow shows up, and that weird hand-eating dog shows up too. As well as a doll, referencing the developers previous game "Darkness Under My Bed" But, as much as i enjoyed the "first mission", i did NOT finish the Open World part, i will wait until a walktrough exists explaining how to get the true ending. This is because i find the "Open World" lacking in content/replay-ability after going through the same small zone over and over and over again, it is sadly VERY BORING after a while. I mean... i easily spent 13 Hours getting the true ending in Darkness Under My Bed, because that game has so much effort and quality, and is visually super unique, AND the AREA is HUGE in that game, i had a blast playing Darkness Under My Bed. I spent over 13 hours in that game, and never felt burnt out, yet in THIS game im burnt out after 3-4 hours. And yes, the quality is intentionally MUCH worse than Bad Dream: Fever, which is FINE and it would have worked IF the playing area was big enough, which it sadly isnt. Another problem is that the player character moves very slowly, in previous games you could quickly cycle trough screens by just clicking, now you have to slowly walk to each area "door", making replaying much more annoying. So, why do i recommend this game if i did not enjoy playing it? well, i DID enjoy the "first mission", and im a HUGE fan of Desert Fox's other games, but yeah, playing this game felt like a HUGE step backwards compared to Bad Dream: Fever and especially compared to Darkness Under My Bed. This is not a bad game, just very disappointing. EDIT: August 16: Firstly, i did not know that there was a way to increase walking speed until i replayed the game, (can be found in settings) so i would like to withdraw my comment/complaint that it was frustrating to slowly walk to each area, it's not. Secondly, again after replaying the game, i found items that i did not find last time, clearly there are other items i still have not found, and i did end up having alot of fun discovering new items and new dialogue. Still have not completed the game, but i do like this game much more after taking a short break, and replaying it again.
(Wow, the 4. Person to write a review to this game, nice.) Ok, I will be straight forward on this: It's definitely better than Bad Dream: Fever, no questions asked. Purgatory is a little different with it's movement, than the other Bad Dream Games, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The different endings and ways to use items are back, what I think was missing in Bad Dream Fever. And I don't have anything to complain about really. So far I'm having fun playing this. I'm still missing a lot of stuff in the game and I will now go back and play this all weekend long, or until I found everything. (English is not my first language, I'm not sorry for any spelling or grammar errors that may occur.)
znowu miałem zły sen... i był wyborny : D
