About
Build exactly the studio you want
In Hollywood Animal, you can decide to build a multi-billion-dollar monster that destroys everything in its path, with blockbusters made strictly according to formulas. But this is far from your only option. You might instead create a boutique studio, and conquer the festivals with avant-garde directors. You could build a trash factory, challenging "good taste" at every turn, filling the screens with blood and spit. This game doesn't tell you how to play or limit you in anything. Just have fun making movies while you try to keep the whole thing afloat.
We shouldn't forget the film industry is just one part of a much larger and dynamic world. Wars and social upheaval, censorship and corruption, strained relations with the authorities and criminal disputes. — Some will be buried in an avalanche of problems, while others seize new opportunities. Make your moves behind the scenes, form unexpected alliances, lie and betray. There are no magic formulas in Hollywood Animal. Only those who can adapt and negotiate survive.
You're the boss, not the groundskeeper
You're the head of a movie studio, and Hollywood Animal delivers challenges fitting your status. Your attention won't be dominated by wallpaper selection and planting bushes. Your time is worth much more than that. Instead you'll be focused on which characters and themes really capture your audience's imagination. That is, while you're not focused on investing in technology that will revolutionize the industry. All while you're persuading a bright young star to sign a long-term contract — despite the fact the arrogant punk has sworn he'll never work with you again.
Of course, Hollywood Animal has everything we love about the genre — building, resource management, upgrades and the rest. — But this is just an outer shell. What matters is the choices you make and the human stories that are written in the process. Whims, prejudices, addictions, secrets from the past... show business is always a tangle of conflicts, and you will be the one to unravel it all. Let someone who works for you take care of the bushes.
Any approach is good — we are, after all, only animals
Hollywood Animal includes you in every step of the filmmaking process, from making up plots to theater distribution, and each part of the game is crafted with artistry and dedication. But the opportunities you'll have are much wider than what you'd usually expect from a tycoon strategy game. Every business has a dark side. You can follow the law — or stay on the mayor's good side. You can raise the screenwriter's salary — or remind him about the prostitute he strangled, which you yourself had hushed up. You can delay a film's release to avoid competition — or ask your friends in the mafia to clear the whole calendar.
You'll want to take great care, when picking the actor for the lead role in your Civil War epic. But in Hollywood Animal, it's just as important how many ribs you'll have to break before he accepts the part.

Honestly I'd love to recommend it because it's just gorgeous and incredibly well polished. Great soundtrack too, great dialogue, it just looks and feels great to play. But as a video game? The gameplay mainly just feels like a bunch of disparate "management" mechanics that really exist to stifle your creativity and make it not only difficult to be successful but a total SLOG to play. A million pop ups, a billion different decisions to make per movie, and while there's feedback on what works, the MOST you get is an up arrow or a down arrow based on the CATEGORY of decisions. I would love if the reviews could point out actual precise criticism with your decisionmaking but the most they usually give is "it sucks, LOL" which doesn't exactly help from a game design perspective. Let's say I'm out of actors and need to hire a new actor for a cool movie script I have. I click the plus button at the bottom of the screen to take me to the hiring menu. I then click on an actor, which takes me to the negotiation menu. I then have to open the side menu to offer non-monetary items, then offer the minimum monetary value, then agree to the negotation, then go BACK to the original menu, then select that guy from the actor list. I mean on that note why do I have to negotiate for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ everything?! I have to go to the negotiation screen to send my actors to children's hospitals for crying out loud. And if you can deal with all that, the game doesn't even let you be successful to begin with. It's one thing to start off with piss poor technology and genre options, but it's another entirely to literally limit the score your movie gets to a 5/10 based on that. Let's say I figure out how to understand all the systems from the get-go (which is basically impossible because of the lack of a serious tutorial, but still, entertain this thought with me), I'm supposed to deal with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ returns from my movies just because? Another thing that really bugged me about the experience was how absurdly long things take. The fastest time you can set the game to only moves at about maybe 5 days per minute? 10? Something like that. And in some cases it can take 1,500 days to research resources / technologies / buildings. And then after you research them it'll usually take 50 - 100 days to build the building, implement the technology, etc. I mean in the end it seems mainly like a game designed to ♥♥♥♥ with you rather than a game designed to let you have fun and be creative. It's a movie making game and it does allow you to tinker with every aspect of a movie, but it also forces you to do it the way it wants you to rather than the way you want, and the way it wants you to is frustratingly poorly implemented. Again, I'd love to recommend it because it's one of the most well polished indie games I've ever played, but the gameplay just doesn't feel correct for what they're trying to do. A prime example of the whole "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with you" aspect is how the in-game Oscar's (Pollux Awards) are implemented. Even if none of your movies have been nominated, you're effectively forced to go because the penalty for not going is fairly steep, especially if you've used up your Reputation Points already. So you go, but you're not allowed to skip or fast-forward, so instead you have to sit through a shockingly long cutscene that shows every single award winner for movies that don't exist, that you've never heard about, that you don't care about. The only plus side is at least you know who to poach from other companies when their contracts expire. But I could already do that, so it's not exactly a big positive. Lastly, it's frustrating just how long it's taking to develop. It's been over a year and we only have Act I (out of 3, I presume) finished. Act 2 is in development and the best we have is "soon" on the release date. It might genuinely be another 3 years before this game actually fully comes out. I'd say best to wait til then because hopefully they're able to iron out all the kinks with this game's design.

The Eternal Life of Goldman.
Slow unskippable "cut scenes". Badly introduced and explained systems. Unexplained consequences for failing missions. Have had to restart three times with in 7ish hours gameplay, because i fail missions and hadn't build the correct building yet. There is a lot of great ideas, there is just a long way for a great game. Wait until full release to buy.
I don't write reviews, but this game deserves one. If you played lionhead's "The Movies" not for the machina but for the management gameplay and the historical cinema? Then this is the game for you. Choices matter and the hand holding is minimal. Yeah, it can be brutal, especially if you make dumb decisions but that is a business management game. Choices have to have consequence and the game is excellent at making you feel it. Is this a casual game? No definitely not, the start may lure you into that mindset but don't be suckered. The mechanics are deep and vast. Patience and learning are your friends here. Could not recommend this game enough, I know I will end up with hundreds of hours in it.
Wanted to like this game since I love movies but felt like I was being punished for having starter equipment and staff despite not having any way to get anything better and barely turning a profit on every movie. Feels like it takes too long to do anything. I love the concept and art style of this though, maybe I'll come back in the future.
I really enjoy the concept of this game. Resource management + old school cinema. You're basically running a film production studio. You build and upgrade your studio at the highest level to achieve better movie ratings. But that's the unfortunate part, upgrading more and more causes stabilization issues. The game has crashed out at least 5 times, maybe at hour 3, once I've unlocked a lot more pieces on the board. Hopefully, those optimization issues get fixed at the next update. This game is easily a 4/5. EDIT: I found another issue while playing. My movies now make no profit. When I get to the distribution stage and get a summary of my sales, it says $0 income. With the crashing issues I've been experiencing and $0 income, it is getting harder for me to keep my stance of recommending this game.
If you start the game with the tutorial you can rename staff. But if youd don't, then you need to do a convoluted way to do it. Not good.
