Hoards of Glory is a dice placement game for 1-4 players. Players take on the role of a Viking captain forced to follow through on his grand boasts! Developed as an answer for how to playtest a tabletop during a pandemic, Hoards of Glory grew into a video game in its own right!
Key provided by the Dev for review purposes!
A buddy of mine got 2 review keys for Hoards of Glory, and asked me if I was interested in playing it with him. It looked pretty fun, so we gave it a go! We played 4 games over 2 hours, and we had some good fun! The objective is simple, roll the dice, and try to fill out your Boast Card before the other players to win! Using spears to remove other players dice, and shields to defend your own, the simple concept works and plays well! Simple to learn, and a good challenge to win. When you start you can pick your "hero" which from what I can tell, doesn't effect the game in any real way, other than the portrait and some in game character audio, which is only a male and female voice change. When you are about to start a game, you then have a choice to pick a Boast Card. This is your main card that you work to completing before the other players. There is currently only 3 to pick from, each have different spaces and bonuses. I do hope they add in more Boast Cards in the future to give a bit more variety. Games are played with 3-4 people, and yes you can have AI players mixed in with online/friends as well! My buddy and I played with 1 AI our first match, then played with 2 for the full 4 player match. The AI can be very unpredictable, so you have to be on your guard. The AI can also be very cheap or even cheaty. I played a 3 AI match by myself, and got absolutely destroyed. The game went pretty good, then when I was close to winning with only 4 spots left, all 3 AI pretty much teamed up against me, and continuously destroyed all my dice EVERY turn, so I could never get a single die. I sat there for 6 turns with no die, and the color of die I needed never popped in the middle, so I eventually lost. If you plan on playing, definitely get at least one friend to play with, it will be a little more fun! The Dice have 4 different colours. Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow. The colour only really matters for you Boast Card. I find this as a HUGE missed opportunity to do more with the colours. A good example could have been that you could have made it so one colour is stronger than another. Like when you have a red shield on, and someone attacks with a green spear, and red was stronger against green, so the green spear dice would have been destroyed instead of removing the shield dice. I also don't like that the player avatars are placed in the middle of the gameboard, and running your mouse over them causes their story text to come up. I think they need to remove that text box, and maybe either move the avatar to the back of the boast cards, or make them go transparent when you mouse over them. Also why on Odins beard is there NO MUSIC in game?!?! There is no ambient music or anything when you are playing, which is a real shame! I would have had loved some Nordic melody playing in the background as we played. I had to resort to some of my own in a separate music app. Also no Team 2v2 mode? For the $5 price tag, and get a few friends together, you can have some fun for a few hours like you were playing any other kind of board game, and that's what really matters here. For that reason I fully recommend it. Hopefully the Devs put some more content here and build on it more. Ah! Just won my first game multiplayer ^,,^ This is really satisfying. Been missing games night a lot amidst the pandemic, and this scratches that fast paced card/dice game itch. It feels nice to play something with an "around the table vibe" and this game is easy to teach to my friends who aren't really PC gamers, so I can play with anyone.
A good, simple to learn game about building and rolling dice pools. Attack and defense is a really fun strategy layer on top of the dice math. My only complaint about the game mechanics themselves is that the physical dice roller has very little room to let the dice roll. You're not getting a true roll from most of them, especially once you start getting more and more dice. The camera also makes it difficult to see opponent cards and dice unless you're zoomed all the way out. The aesthetic and UI trappings of the game are a little bad, but you can't complain too much for a $3 game. The voiceover is... a lot. The default music levels are way too loud, so turn those down immediately. The font makes the text utterly unreadable and it's very difficult to parse the rulebook. Luckily it's a very intuitive game so the brief tutorialization at the start of your first game is more than enough -- though many of the messages are timed and will disappear before you finish reading them. It's a credit to the game's design that this isn't a serious problem. I haven't played multiplayer but the AI does a good job since the game has limited verbs, and even Easy opponents can give you and the more difficult AIs a run for their money. It's only $3, this is very worth your impulse buy if you're in the mood for a well-designed dice-rolling board game.
I actually like this little game. (I don't have time to write a full review -but this game severely needs more reviews, so I'll do a SHORT one.) *AI seems balanced and I feel challenged even on Easy (but I'm a noob too, so keep that in mind) * surprised me w/ amount of strategies there are. * can save the game & come back to it later - music is alright, but I got annoyed with it after 15 mins since I think it's only 1 track (not counting the song at the main menu) * I like being able to move the dice around before committing to an action. it helps me organize my thoughts * sound effects are good. there aren't many, but they are there for everything you would expect to make a sound. ie: spear attacks, defending, coins jingling off each other when you collect them at the end of a round *voice overs= what's here works, but it's not a story-based RPG or anything, lol, so Idk what you expected. there are voice lines every so often like when someone wins a reward they go "YES!", when you use a defend die "I'm Holding". just little lines like that which make the game feel more alive is a nice touch. I'll have to play more to see what else they say in certain situations All in all, I like it. it's simple, but there's strategy to it and enough animation and physics to make it more interesting than...say a real life dice game. :D (will update later after I've played a few games. I spent my time playing Single player vs. 2 Easy AI)
I really enjoy the attack/defense dynamics. It adds a level of strategy beyond luck of random die rolls. Being brand new, the game has a few quirks, but i'm confident the devs will deal with them in time.
Very cool game, I really like this!!!
Easy to learn, fun to play!!
Surprisingly deep strategy, especially in multiplayer. Asymmetrical scoreboards allow for different play styles.
