Alright. Highwater is done and dusted. This is the third game in this IP, which features Golf Club Nostalgia (formerly Golf Club Wasteland) and The Cub. This entry is the prequel to the events of the other two games. There are two extra stories that you can play after you finish the base game: ARC and Aftermath. ARC offers an in depth playthrough of a cutscene from the base game, and Aftermath deals with the people you leave behind from the base game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3362437277 Anyway, as mentioned this is the prequel to the other two games in the series and not only dives deeper into how Earth became toxic for humanity, but also explores the events leading up to people leaving for Mars through the eyes of Nikos and his band of adventurers who are set on making it onto a rocket that will be heading to Mars. Additionally, story points include touching on how the children who were left behind were able to survive (and if you've played The Cub, you know they thrived). This was a fun and quirky story that did a good job of fleshing out the world you have come to know via the previous games. I'd say there is still more to be had, and I can see Demagog Studio making a few more games in the IP. Beyond the core story, this game is a meta machine and leans heavily into a comical and sarcastic look at society and politics while also managing to be very spot on in the way it views these things and how it presents those views. I really enjoyed this aspect of the game a lot. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3362437300 Where Golf Club Wasteland was inspired by Angry Birds and The Cub was inspired by various platformers, this game takes its inspiration from turn-based semi open world RPGs. I think it's cool that the devs try a different style with each entry. It's not perfect: the turn-based battle sequences are very slow paced and you have no control over your party composition; but the actual application of said battles and the inclusion of special abilities, limited use buffs, and a small variety of weapons does work fine. The world exploration is limited, but also nice. You will travel around in your little rubber motorboat, the "Argo", and will find various areas to disembark and explore. Mostly, the exploration will allow you to find buff items, weapons, and bits of lore in the form of books, newspapers, and the occasional random item. There are also places with phot prompts to take snapshots of in game. Beyond that, exploration will take you to the next story/quest areas. These various locations are marked on your minimap and are easy to navigate to. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3362437189 The game does a good job of not making you backtrack too much. Where that would be necessary, it will simply teleport you back for all intents and purposes. So, the tedium is thankfully missing. The graphics are consistent with this developer's previous work. Very colorful world juxtaposed with the detritus of a dying world. There is a good amount of detail with the various assets they crafted, and it is a visually pleasing game through and through. Most dialogue is written, but the radio host from the other games is here as well, manning the mic for HPR (Highwater Pirate Radio) this time around, and they included both more songs and more news segments for this game than with past entries. It's a fun thing and pretty much something to expect from all Demagog games moving forward. Fortunately, you can tell they enjoy having the radio stations in their games. While I wouldn't characterize this game as a must play, I would say that if you have played the other two games, you should definitely also play this one. It's fun, and what flaws it has can be forgiven due to the overall charm and cool factor the game and series has. I think grabbing this one on sale is the way to go.
Dissappointing
I'm tempted when encountering a junk game to not leave a negative review or any review at all, but I feel it is necessary to warn people, that the game is unfinished. Not much more to be said for a game with a developer who has been silent for 2 years. Nice game idea, but so many rough edges and things in the game that just make it feel like an experiment in how to code a computer game, than an actual finished product. Every step in the game is either exploration fun, or a is a combat-puzzle, and it's jarring and distracting. There are somehow very few exploring things to do in the game. A real pity because the story does seem to go someplace, but the combat-puzzles are just tedious. You have to do the turn based combat just so or start over, and it's slow and clunky and laggy on top of it all. If this review has saved you 2 hours of your life, give it a like.
Probably not worth your time. Not mine, at least.
It should be a perfect game for me. Exploring a post apocolyptic flooded world on a power boat, searching little islands for some lore and the occasional turn based tactical skirmish all while listening to some chill tunes on the radio. It all sounds appealing but I just found the implementation here to be a bit of let down. The games controls seems a bit wonky, the horizontal camera pan is reversed (at least for my brain) and although the game offers re-mapping changing this particular aspect seems to be an oversight. The world is mostly empty, the islands are all kind of samey, and the lore is never really that interesting. So exploration just feels unsatisfying. The tactics bits are fine and I appreciate the even have an undo button but it just lacks a bit of dept and feels very repetitive after a couple of battles. The radio DJ can provide a bit of world building at times but mostly its just kind of bland indie music that wasn't really to my taste. So overall although I get the game is going for chill but it kind of just comes off as boring. Regardless I think it would be harsh to give it a bad review since its not necessarily a bad game. Just wasn't my taste and I'm just more disappointed than anything. So despite everything I've said I'm still giving it a thumbs up, I'm sure other players will be able to get more out of it.
The concept seemed fine, but the disconnect between the game play modes (exploration and battle) is jarring.
A very chill game with beautiful music and a heavenly atmosphere, despite the grim setting itself. Turn based combat is a nice touch that doesn't require much strategy but is a novel approach since this game wouldn't work as well as a straight up 3rd person platformer, so goofy / jumpy violence was never going to work here and what they've chosen instead works well. These developers have a real gift for delivering atmosphere, which isn't too surprising considering they were able to pull it off in a 2D golf game (Golf Club Wasteland is a total classic in my book). Perfect game to zone out to on the Deck.
Just an hour or so in, and it's pretty nice and chilled. The combat is no real threat, the story is nice. A pretty good game.
Highwater, the second entry of the Demagog franchise, and the third one I've played. Formerly an exclusive on Netflix for whole 6 people, the game is now released on Steam for all of us to play. The story is set after the environmental disaster and floods took place but before humanity's departure to Mars, and the game takes the form of third person exploration instead of two dimensional sidescrolling Golf Club: Wasteland or The Cub chose to adapt. The main plot of the story is very straightforward, a band of refugees are trying to get inside a rocket to escape to Mars, their last chance at salvation. but the developers must felt a certain amount of pressure lengthening the game with the core plot this simple because the writing here is subpar to be honest. all characters, for some reason have this overly chill, laidback attitude that's almost nihilistic. there's no sense of urgency and the game encourages this vibe by putting slow paced boat rides and indie folk music. Insurgents are referred to as a serious threat but they're depicted as an incompetent laughingstocks who don't even think to confiscate crowbars from their captives when you meet them, and there's a bandit Viking gang which I suspect is only put there to insert humor aspects into the game which I felt just dumb and off putting. Subtle worldbuilding that comes with collectibles feels stale now, while I agree with the most of the points the same message of technology ridden society sucks megacorpos bad multibillionaires evil is being preached to players without any difference in tone for 3 whole games at this point. Also some of the early areas are cheaply paced lore dumps and just riddled with collectibles. Okay, Elon Musk is an insufferable egomaniac, I GET IT. The predecessor of Radio Nostalgia, Highwater Pirate Radio, still exists with the same host but with not enough caller stories to fill the gaps between songs and public announcements it feels much less genuine than the one from Golf Club. Turn based combat, tolarable, but hardly enjoyable especially with Josephine being too overpowered with her chain attacks paired with ranged attacks from other characters. it's so easy you don't even need to spend the consumables given to you. The last boss is a pure joke, with only 2 weak enemies serving as guards your goofy band of rejects will effectively make a pinata out of the boss. I also experienced few glitches, easy to spot ones like dialogues getting attributed to wrong characters and two word balloons spawning outside of the screen boundaries. A lack of QA on their part. I admire their effort in trying new approach to expand their IP but sadly this installment failed to meet my expectations set by their other games. recommended only for people who are really invested in this franchise. 5/10.
