Heroes of the Monkey Tavern is a decent dungeon crawler that scratches the Legend of Grimrock itch, but its combat and progression systems are highly lackluster. Combat relies entirely on attack cooldown timers. Battles lack strategy, forcing you to stand still and click buttons as timers expire. There is no aggro mechanic; enemies attack characters at random. If a squishy, cloth-wearing class is targeted, you must burn through mana to keep them alive. Compounding this issue, you cannot customize stats to increase your mana pool. Strategy is strictly limited to basic item and potion management. Character progression is equally rigid. Level-ups automatically assign stats and skills with zero player input. Furthermore, the game fails to explain what new skills actually do, drastically needing a hover-over tooltip or context help system. Loot drops are completely fixed, stripping away any excitement of discovery—you simply equip whatever has the highest number. Pick it up on a deep sale if you need a quick grid-based fix, but do not expect a deep or engaging experience.
You pay for what you get. That said.... For what you get, its a decent enough game and I would give it a go. Its no "Legend of Grimrock" but for the price its quite good. I think a few of the negatives reviews aren't considering the price. Its worth the go for the price. There aren't many first person, grid based dungeon crawlers out there these days. I grew up in the 90s with "Dungeons of the Unforgiven", so for me, this is the type of game I wish Steam had more of and the lack of them makes me thankful for a decently priced game like this one.
Monkey Tavern is a dungeon crawler that is suitable for people that does not have ample time for puzzles. It is short and it does it job. Even leveling up you have no control on what stats to increase or what skills to pick. It is all auto. There are 8 classes to choose from for players to mix and match but you indeed need a healer for some of the tougher fights as there is no item shop and potions are limited. Very limited. It is not without fault which i feel the DEVs could have done a better job. That is to explain what are the skills functions or limitations.. But i did have fun with this little crawler and it deserve praise. 7/10 for the gameplay and replayability.
Basic, no-frills dungeon crawler that's nonetheless competent, especially on sale. Recommended.
A fairly simple Dungeon Master-like that can be finished in a few sittings. Good for a low-commitment dungeon crawl fix. If you are motion-sensitive, though, be advised that the wobbly camera movement can be uncomfortable.
Such a fun game, something I was able to play in a weekend. Never wore-out its welcome. There is not a lot of instructions, so I'd recommend checking the guides and dissusion groups, maybe watch some online videos. All-in-all, a simple but fun dungeon crawler, highly recommend.
This game has a lot of potential, but it gets bogged down by some unwanted mechanics that the developer insists are necessary (he could have made these options in the menu): 1) No square fighting. If you try to kite or square off against an enemy when you have enough space, the game punishes you with a percentage loss of health for attempting to escape; 2) There’s no sensible magic system—just a handful of spells and animations, and that’s pretty much it. You’ll end up using your regular weapons way more than magic (except for healing); 3) Constant healing during fights is a must. If a party member dies, you have to reload your save and try again... I was really hoping for something like Black Crypt or Dungeon Master 1/HSB, but as usual, I guess I was asking for too much. Grimlock came the closest to that level, but it also had a pretty immature magic system and a different vibe.
Yea... it just kinda sucks in general. The writing is bad. The voice acting is bad. The art is bad. You can't customise character portraits. The character portraits are bad. The combat is bad. No Steam Workshop support. It's just not very good.
