This game looks cool, but there’s something off about it. The sensitivity of poses seems far too unforgiving. I’ve had several friends try the game out to see if I’m the problem, but they all have the same issue (using the different difficulty and accuracy settings of course). We’re using a Valve Index with a pretty beefy system, no trouble in any other games, and none of us can get into the game. Everyone seems to be doing the hole poses correctly in time, but there are so many misses. I can totally see the fun of the game and the exercise benefits, but there really seems to be something off with the mechanics that kind of ruin it.
You can do really intense workout exercises with OhShape in order to burn some calories, or you can play it at a chill pace, just to enjoy the experience. OhShape is a game that can only be played with a VR headset and I've experienced it with a Valve Index. There are good things and bad things about this game (which I will briefly explain below), but my conclusion after trying it out for one hour is that i'd recommend it. I found it amusing that it has a tutorial. The game is pretty straight forward (as seen in Steam Store page presentation movie). From all the sports VR games I've tried so far, OhShape was the only one I really felt I was working out my legs as well along with the arms. One useful feature is "setup for a small room", which I was definitely needing, but unfortunately it seems that enabling that makes the human height shape smaller too (which forced me to keep my knees flexed at all times). I am usually sensitive to motion sickness generated by VR movement, but I had absolutely no issues with that in OhShape. It is super-cool that you can play with your own music (in order to do that you need to put your music files in a designated folder - further instructions can be found in the game's menu). It has minimalist design and graphics and it occupies less than 500 MB storage. It seems that the only way to pause the gameplay is by minimizing the game. Lastly, I think that the price is a bit too high, but for anything less than 10 bucks (maybe during a Steam sale) would make this a great acquisition.
When it comes to VR Rhythm games, it's really hard to find something unique. They all usually fall under the same category/gameplay style and Beat Saber is usually the big brother. But OhShape takes this in a whole different direction in a fun and interesting way. As most people have said already, it reminds me a lot of the show "Hole in the wall", and that's a good thing. But it doesn't only have those walls to go through, but also walls you have completely dodge to the side, to punch/break with either one or both arms, and coins to collect. All of these aspects are then being thrown together with the beat of the music in the form of a dance choreography. I definitely recommend this game if you are into dance/rhythm games and just want to have fun dancing to some great tracks. There's also a custom level editor you can use to make a level out of your favorite track! I've talked a bit to the devs of this game in their discord, they are quite responsive to feedback and seem really down to earth. Great people, great community and I think this game deserves more recognition than it gets.
Dancing + Hole In the Wall brought to a whole new level. I'm not a big VR title buyer, mainly sticking to Beat Saber, but after watching one video this game called to me. It takes some time to adjust to, but once you get the hang you feel amazing. It gives you both an arm and leg workout and is far more unique of an experience than it may seem. I had so much fun after only playing a short amount of time (my hours are on Oculus, not steam for now) and I want to keep on going. After only a couple months being accessible the game feels very polished. With only 8 songs at the moment and custom songs under way I feel like I could play for hours without getting bored. Although there are a few optimal functions still WIPs, it still a fully working game. The devs are completely open to listening to feedback and read nearly everything. I had an issue that I was having trouble solving, I asked on the public discord, and was helped by a dev within hours. He made it clear that he wanted to make an effort to help me and he solved my issue. I would recommend this game to anyone who plays rhythm games, likes dancing, or wants to feel like a badass while they phase through walls.
While I think this could be an amazing game for working out, I think there needs to be some more customization in terms of play area or precision of the shape. For instance,in my current space I am too tall and hit the ceiling fan when I have to raise my hands over my head. And even on shapes that don't require that, I feel like I am doing the right move and my shadow isn't showing on the wall, but it still counting as a miss. I think I'll stick with BeatSaber unless there are some changes to how this game works.
Confession: I hate to get up out of my comfy office chair but this game made me do it. I really got obsessed once I started playing this game and the DLCs are even better. I play with the accuracy all the way down and small room on and just have fun. Works perfect on Index.
To preface, I love rhythm games and the idea of a full body game is very appealing. However, I don't think the game is calibrated correctly. This is the only game I have ever considered refunding. I spent around an hour frustratingly trying to recreate very specific shape where I just put my hand on my hip. It failed 90% of the time with no clear reason why.
I've attempted to play on it on Linux. I had an assie, made few investigations and provided the data to Valve and the devs. Here is the result : - no support here from devs - forms on their website doesn't work - devs don't respond to emails sent directly to them - Valve doesn't care => refund, I think I've made enough honest attempts. I don't give money to people who don't care of their own products and their customers.
I am very disappointed. The game crashes as soon as it starts. I've already contacted the support team who tried to help me, but they won't get back to me. After further research, I was able to find out that it is probably a problem caused by an update. Too bad, I was really looking forward to the game.
Good: Lots of fun and giggles! Great to solo as a workout or party with friends and family. It's worth the price tag. Bad: It is not very accurate with HP Reverb G2. Maybe that's a headset/ tracking issue. It's still fun nonetheless unless you want to play it competitively.
