About
Helicopter Gunship D.E.X is a tactical helicopter combat sim inspired by the classic helicopter games of the late 90s, rebuilt for modern players.
Fly attack helicopters across large combat zones, manage sensors and weapons, and take on procedurally generated missions where every sortie can unfold differently.
With scalable flight models, gamepad and HOTAS support, and authentic battlefield decision-making without burying you in complexity, HG:DEX aims to capture the thrill of low-level helicopter combat: Detect, Engage, eXfiltrate!
You won't find any magically respawning missiles here! Instead you will find realistic weapon loadouts, a simulation level physics driven helicopter flight model and the usual targeting pods and RADAR systems you would expect in this type of game. You'll need to employ authentic tactics and systems but without the 300-key learning curve!
Overall difficulty can be adjusted, including:
Customisable flight model to make flying the helicopters much easier
Complete control of mission difficulty including enemy strength, AAA/SAM/MANPAD density etc
Simplified targeting controls
Enemy weapon damage modifier
Fuel usage modifiers
There are currently 10 main helicopters...
AH-64 Apache
Lynx
Gazelle
AH-1Z Viper
AH-56 Cheyenne
RAH-66 Comanche
Kiowa Warrior
Mi-24 Hind
Chinook
MH-60 Blackhawk DAP
...and most have several different versions.
The main part of the game revolves around the random mission generator that allows you to define your own procedurally generated engagements which will never play out the same way twice.
Mission types include Strike, SEAD, Search & Destroy, Recon, Transportation etc.
Each mission in Helicopter Gunship D.E.X utilises a deployment point system ensuring missions remain balanced and that older weapons and helicopters still have a role to play no matter what the mission involves.
Fully playable from either 1st person in cockpit or 3rd person chase cam perspectives.
Fully playable with a gamepad but also completely re-bindable controls for HOTAS systems.
Special modes for mouse & keyboard flyers.
Robust procedurally generated random mission generator allowing you to quickly get into the action.
Multiple helicopter flight models ranging from Simple to Realistic that allows even novice helicopter pilots to get straight into the action.
Places you in direct control of both flying the helicopter and using the various targeting systems to designate and destroy targets.
Easy to get into but still difficult and rewarding to master.
3 distinct terrains to fight over. Central Libya (100km x 50km), Coastal Norway (40km x 40km) & Lush Desert (40km x 40km).
Weapon load outs are based on real world helicopter capabilities and you will use the same kind of real-world targeting systems such as "SACLOS", "Laser", "RADAR" etc to detect, designate and destroy your mission targets.
A slight departure from reality is that you, the pilot, will be in direct control of designating targets and firing weapons even in helicopters that have co-pilot/gunner positions. Your CP/G will aid in target identification and spotting targets visually.
Weapon types range from modern Fire & Forget, like the Brimstone, to Cold War era weapons, such as the TOW, as well as a wide range of rocket pods, gun pods, bombs & door gunners.
Helicopter Gunship D.E.X supports TrackIR, OpenTrack and Tobii Eye Tracking via the TrackIR software.
VR mode is available but not fully supported just yet. You can read more about VR support in the Steam Forums.
Single "challenge" missions & training missions are the main focus of the current beta.

This game badly needs an in game tutorial. Badly. The tutorial videos available in youtube are dated, uncomplete, hard to follow and don't cover everything. Camera movement could be smoother, more polished. Other than that, the flight model is OK, the helis are complex but rewarding to pilot, for a game that is more arcade than simulator. As with any Early Access, check how often there are updates before buying. Hope the game will mature for the best. For anyone interested, runs great on Linux via Wine/Proton.
Threw my wallet at the monitor upon first sight of the OH-58d Kiowa. Grew up next to the factory, back before 9/11 they parked these and sometimes the new cobras, 10-20 yards from the fence at most. Both my Father and Grandfather retired from Bell Helicopter. The model 206 (Non-military oh-58 base model) was his favorite helicopter. I bought a second copy to add some extra bite to the 206b3 simulator we built together. He would have loved the work and detail ya'll put into this. Thank you. Also, as a kid who graduated from Bell Highschool and grew up firing model rockets on the Cobra gunsight range... These helicopter models put a smile on my face. Nicely Done.
I LOVE THIS SIM! It can be as simple as arcade and as complex as a proper SIM! TONS of content. TONS of random-ability. Is it DCS? Hell no. Thank you LORD! No, it runs great, looks pretty good. And I love the explosions. Something DCS did not work on for almost 2 decades, as with most all other things important to their customer investors. No, no study level cockpits with functionality to every button. BUT, they looks pretty good. They do the job well. The immersion is there. The SCALE of the world seems proper LARGE to me unlike DCS. DCS has always felt like you are in a ride traveling over a miniature world, like Pop's basement railroad... The Dev LISTENS and adds and improves CONSTANTLY! VERY TALENTED too! Would I like better graphics and cockpit details? SURE! But they are good enough for now. I was out of the sim for a year. But I let it update. When I had time to again it was only a few minutes to get back into the swing of things easily. And what a STELLAR improvement that year made! Multiple new choppers added. EVERYTHING looked and ran better all across the board. Massive replayability additions provided.... I am a FAN! I wish more devs were like this! IF only DCS was more like this SIM! But they will never be. The only thing DCS is truly good at is being extremely overpriced and always 10 years too late listening to their player base; while they chase after forgotten projects and never finished scenery and aircraft modules. How are they still going? DEX stands alone as-is. DEX does the job, and git's 'er done! Dex will be around and growing for a long time to come. Thank you DEX devs!
No tutorials, guides, walkthrus, or any info about how to play either in-game or online, save for 3 youtube videos from an early build in 2023
An Amazing Light Sim that perfectly balances Realism with fun You can play the game without HOTAS setup and still have fun, though I wish the Mouse controls would be improved as the Helicopter just rolls all over the place making it hard to control, so far the viable option i have is to set the Sensitivity of the Y Mouse Speed to low (25-40 Depending which Helicopter you fly) Other than that, and Utterly amazing Game, Totally recommend, Worth the price for the amount of Helicopters and replayability it offers in early access. I edit this to mention how pleased i am with this purchase
One of the few single-player attack helicopter games on Steam. Not too realistic but not too arcadey. Reminds me of Apache Air Assault by Gaijin. I found myself playing it for several days on end. Really fun game to have in your library and scratches that itch to fly that we all get. Weapon systems work well, but I found myself having to learn the game on my own since there aren't that many tutorials online and the guides created by the dev aren't up to date. But overall I'd recommend it.
pitty there are only a few maps to choose from, defiantly needs a tutorial on how to fly and use weapons an stuff, i cant seem to find it if there is.. after working out what does what its a decent enough game to play. graphics are on the low side.
Truly underrated gem! I'm a DCS snob but love helicopters, so I came to this more for concept than for expectation of a stellar game. I'm floored in the best way. Helicopter Gunship DEX (HGD) is an amazing example of a small game doing it BIG with the delivered product. The thought and detail put into the game leave you feeling that care was put into the flight model. Set aside the incredulous aim that the AI has, the game is fun and engaging. I hope it gets fleshed out more, but it already has plenty of replay-ability as is. Finally a decent helicopter game/demi-sim!!!! I'd actually recommend this at full price but by all means catch a sales break when it happens!
Fun, easy to learn even without a tutorial, highly replayable
It's a great "game"...not a simulation....but then, it wasn't intended to be. It's fun and just enough skill involved to keep one coming back! Highly recommend it.
