Oh boy, this needs more time in the oven. The animations are so stiff and limited it's sad to look at The combat music is annoying and starts and stops abruptly when you start and leave combat, there is no fade in and fade out, it's silly There is no limitation to the dash/dodge either in resources or cooldown so you move always by spamming it and you also spam the sword attack because it reflects bullets (which are flying everywhere all the time, it looks more like a bullet hell than an action game sometimes), so you are always either spamming one button or the other, my thumb does not want me to play it anymore after half an hour. Enemy variety is anemic at best It's cheap, so it's shortcomings might be forgivable for some people, in my case I have little time to play games and regardless of the monetary cost, it's not worth the time. It needs a lot of polish and content, I can't recommend it when there are games like Furi out there
game is pretty fun, has bullethell like mechanics where you can either dodge or use your sword to attempt to parry the bullets away, you can find runes as you progress that are active abilites like slow timea reflect bubble etc. shout out too the devs aswell for replying quickly to an issue i had and fixing it
Dang, this is pretty fun, man. It's got a nice art style with greatly textured surfaces. Mostly rock. Fits the Norse setting quite good. Music and animation are absolutely on the lower end of quality however but I quickly forgot about it. The gameplay is just that captivating. By that I mean, it's fast, so fast and there's almost never downtime. The fixed camera makes it easier to only focus on movement and combat. Here two short WebMs showing the game in motion. Dunno if they get embedded here. https://my.mixtape.moe/mbtsra.webm https://my.mixtape.moe/whkxfx.webm Helheim's story is basic stuff and window decoration for the gameplay. You're the lord of Ragnarok I think but ♥♥♥♥ goes downhill and you get captured. That's where the game starts and anything from here on is about brutally mincing everything on your path back to your rightful throne. Think I'm about halfway through and I was in a rocky dungeon, snowy cliffs, flaming hellscapes and electrifying sort-of high-tech places. The journey is quite varied. Enough with the story though, it's really only a backdrop. It's all about gameplay. As I said it's fast. That's because your main moving mechanic dodging is so well done. First of all, it's infinite. That makes blazing like miniature lightning on the battlefield the most satisfying thing to do. Also, you invulnerable while dodging, making it the defacto state to be in during combat. The only time I walk normally was to admire the sweet environments after the slaughter ends. Combat here is in form of closed arenas which trap you until the last enemy is slain. Afterward, you move on a linear path without combat until the next arena. This could be jarring but Helheim implements the arenas naturally into its map which ends up favorably. The only weapon you have is a sword with whom you can repel enemy projectiles. There's a generous timing window but button mashing will end up with you getting hit. Coupled with the second big pillar of combat Runes, combat gets surprisingly deep. These skills vary from projectile-reflection, health absorption to aggressive projectile-type magic attacks. In my roughly 2 hours of playing, I managed to collect all runes I think. Two of these can be equipped before every battle via rune selectors. Runes are like special skills which you have to use tactically as their bar fills up by killing enemies. For masses of mediocre enemies, it's fun unleash runes while quickly filling up the gauge. But once you reach a certain point, you'll be sparingly using them for the tougher enemies. Speaking about enemies, there's the projectile shooting weak ones which usually aren't problematic. Unless you don't make quick business and let enough of them spawn which can make the game look like a true bullet hell shmup. No joke, there'll be plenty times where dodging waves of bullets is the only way to not get hit. Walking on the battlefield is almost a no-go. Still, more difficult enemies get slowly introduced and those can really mess up your day. Rocket-launching giants, teleporting sharpshooters and witches whose screams throws waves that punch you can become a serious issue. Prioritizing the order of enemies to tackle coupled with thoughtful usage of runes is critical. Any other tactic will be your doom. That's a good thing as it makes combat something to look forward. Trying out rune combinations and finding the perfect tactic to achieve victoriously is really satisfying. There are thinking and depth to the gameplay here, which makes Helheim a winner. It's not an easy game, I died plenty of times even on "Easy" and at times you might think it's cheap and consider giving up. But after several tries, even the most difficult arena can be swept dominantly. It's all about finding the right approach and perfecting the mechanics. Very satisfying.
Boring combat system. It reminds of Furi but convoluted and unoptimised. Furthermore, enemies follow unexiciting attack patterns, often they're literally fixed in one point and just shoot. Way too generic music and level design, overally the game feels unfinished. Disappointing and i don't think that updates will save the game.
This game is the equivalent of repeatedly wrapping your foreskin over your nutts with the logic that it would be a fun and exciting exercise. I am sure there are people out there who could do that over and over but surely you need to spice it up a little. This game has 2 attack animations, both of which were stolen from the Karate Kid III movie. Not once in my life did I think I would see a machine-gun/shotgun/rocketlauncher wielding monsters in Norse Hell, its a fresh take for sure but one you would get and implement in this manner after snorting gravel off the side of the road.
It's a Norse revenge story with a female character. Cut scene art and voice acting is serviceable. Levels become samey fast, but aren't ugly. Animations are off. They randomly cut off early and seem really jerky. Shooting minions just stand still and fire, banshees dash at you and has a AOE scream. At times they dash to you and immediately yell, when you dodge they dash back to you to attack again. This loop where it becomes very difficult to hit them without taking damage happens about 1/3 of the time. At melee range your attacks don't always deflect bullets. Knowing when it will deflect and when it won't can get frustrating. Dashing around is fun, but movement feels like butter sliding around on a plate. The game will also stutter sometimes, and needs optimization. Sometimes attacks go through the reflect aura. Notice I use "at times" or "not always". Game play feels inconsistent and it is difficult to get a groove. If controls get tightened up, this could be pretty fun. It's hard to recommend when there are better options out there. I normally like janky games, and I really want to like this game. Potential is here, but at this time I can't recommend it.
It's a good first game. Not really a great game. The ability to reflect bullets back at enemies is neato, but rather moot when I also have a dash and enemies are stationary gun turrets. The only times it becomes relevant is when the arena gets filled with so many enemies that you have to just SPAM that attack button. Runes also make the game a cakewalk on normal difficulty. Music is a bit dissapointingly generic, mostly orchestral. A romp through norse legend is worthy of some power metal riffs at the very least. Hel herself does not feel nearly as satisfying to control as she should. She swings her sword with all the weight of a wiffle ball bat, with stiff animations and zero follow-through on her momentum. The dash is actually the coolest part of controlling her, making me really feel like a supernatural being of death that dematerializes to reappear directly in front of hapless opponents. Paired with the time slowing rune, the game has the potential to be quite a nice power trip. However, Hel's poor animation tends to throw that off. The aesthetic is cool but often wasted on huge arenas with very little of note in them. I like the idea of sci-fi norse mythos, and the norse mythos in general needs more love. Environmental design is passable, but a bit boring. All the rock hexagons get dull within 15 minutes, but all the norse iconography is nicely done, and the lava and such looks good. I really hope the developer(s?) puts more love and care into this game, because it's a really neat concept. Last thing of note- the english translation is a LITTLE spotty in some places. I personally let this slide, but other people might not. Won't refund, hoping for more developments on this, but definately a negative from me so far. Overall I give 5 reflected bullets out of a wierd glowy sword.
After completing the game in 2 hours my reacton was: "And this was on my wishlist? And I've even paid for it?!" Not worth it :/
Great things about this game: - nice fast-paced feel - IMO the gaming market really needs more "dash and slash" games like these - isometric viewpoint but doesn't make bullets hard to see (something not many similar games achieve) - well-balanced mob design, reload on the gunners is quite a witty gimmick - runes are alright, could be more balanced but they're fun to play around with and that's the important thing Problems: - if you miss a rune you can't go back to retrieve it - hitbox of the stomp attacks feels wonky, can't dash through them consistently - the corners of the port levels have some odd pathing - in the tutorial it says dash is Up Arrow, it's actually space Really want to give this game a high score but I can't due to these bugs. Regardless, Helheim makes for a very fun, challenging game. And of course if things get patched I'll edit my review accordingly. Final verdict: 7/10
Simplistic combat. Minimal story. Mediocre controls. Overall a dull experience. Enemies don't move, they're just turrets. You powers are useless because the base ability of deflecting bullets with your sword means you just run around swinging. No tactics.
