The Adventures of Elena Temple: Definitive Edition

ZX-Spectrum.

23.03.2020 23:42 dez
(7/10) An interesting little neo-retro platformer. It really does accurately re-create the feeling of exploring and playing games back in the 'good' (bad) old days, heavily covered by nostalgia that may not really live up to your memory if you went back and played them today. The sound/graphics are both period appropriate, and the edges that get shaved off the old game-play are the right ones, letting you experience a challenging adventure without having to deal with limited lives or long re-treads through areas every time you die. The one thing that I feel is that there is something of a missed opportunity in the way they let you select different 'ports' (skins) to play in. I feel like there could have been some game-play tweaks port to port to enhance the replayability and/or challenge. I.e. maybe an effect, or an ability, that would be unique to each system to layer on top of the basic game, and have some challenge areas or hidden secrets that you could only get to playing with each system. Aah well, for what it is, it was certainly amusing enough and I did have fun playing through what was there.
So I ran through this game pretty damn quick... and I must say. I love it. By the time I'm writing this, I'm 34 years old - I've been a gamer since I was before 5 trying to play anything I can get my hands on. I remember going to the Tandyvision in the computer lab at my school and typing in commands to get platformer like these to run well up into even the late 90's (North Carolina Computer Labs were outdated as fuuuuu). And let me tell ya - while this game is a cinch compared to the triangle spike laden worlds I've had tiny pixelated men impaled on it's a refreshing Extremely true to nature game for what it's trying to emulate. The low resolution, the two-ish color scheme, the somewhat haunting chiptune (albeit a bit more advanced than what was 1982 BUT most games back then were silent but with sound fx save the exception for the title screen... it's something I can forgive because this added to immersion.) The controls are keyboard dependant, just like the olden times- I know it's a turn off for some but honestly it's part of the experience (also cramping my hands and taking breaks) which leads me to my next thing. The Controls, this is clearly emulating early platform controls where your little dude felt like they were wearing spring shoes while holding a bag full of lead. It's something that would almost be unforgivable now with the way 2D jump physics has evolved - but not only is it Emulated, the levels are designed with that concept of jump physics in mind - meaning you have to really learn how to deal with the primitive platforming physics. Oh and the platforming gimmicks really touches base with the nostalgic roots - it was a simpler time but the levels are crafted with the limited gimmicks in combining them to pose an interesting challenge each room. On top of it all though, the beginning is slapped with a story of a failed game developer - Ouch. Right in the feels - also his mom is a jerk. So I got this game on discount, 2 bucks. Well worth it. But I would even go to say 5 bucks is worth it - after all... you would spend 5 bucks on a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese meal right? (more like 8 bucks) Well this is more satisfying even if it's something I might revisit - get all the achievements, and let it sit in my collection to torture...er I mean entertain my future nephews and nieces... or current ones I guess.
I can understand what the developer was going for here ( I think ) and respect that. However, for me PERSONALLY it was an exercise in frustration.
I think I got this game in an IndieGala bundle (also RIP to their good bundles)... is usually not a sentence I start my reviews with. BUT here we are... I am not sure if Elena Temple was a game that existed at one point as I am too lazy and had a few drinks to research. However, if you like platformer games this is easily has a love/hate balance. It reminds me a bit of Celeste where some of the platforming can be easy, some difficult but regardless there is a checkpoint just a few seconds earlier. The difference this time is that the game is kind of open to you where you want to go, there is a map and I think I got lost a couple times but found a gate where I needed 99 coins to pass and I had maybe 10. There are enemies (maybe a cactus or maybe a scorpion) that you find bullets for your pistol and max ammo is 2 so watch out. Aesthetic wise, you can quickly change from one screen to another (like gameboy to MS DOS) and everything is smooth. I really liked this for what it is, definitely worth trying out~
The first dungeon was fun, the second one seemed frustrating. I only paid $1 for it so I am happy with finishing the first dungeon for that price.
It's not just underrated, it's also underpriced. I'd've gladly payed double the full price for such a complete experience. It's poorly advertised by the childish drawing of the title. This is intentional of course, related to the story, the game is actually pretty serious and all levels (screens) are professionally designed. Also, it's not just for old folks, I had to fight my kid over the controller, which is also related to the story, because that's exactly how I was playing when I was his age, just fighting with my brother instead.
The Adventures of Elena Temple: Definitive Edition is a retro pixel 2D monochrome platformer where you control an adventurer woman through various archaeological themed platformer levels. The developers seem to have put more effort into backdrops and themes than the actual game. Graphics are terrible, mono-pixel. Controls for controllers like HOTAS, racing wheels and pedals are automatically mapped as if they are console peasant gamepads, a demonstration from the developer that they don't understand PC gaming and don't know how to program a control remapping interface. Or even understand why one is necessary. Barely a game at all, for $7.50 you're paying for an Adobe Flash tier shovelware platformer and a bunch of pictures of old computers. Impossible to recommend.
This is neat! This is comfy! I played this while waiting for somebody to cook me some burritos and Brussels sprouts and I do not regret it in the least! Elena Temple may be built like a gummy bear, but that chunky chick can adventure her a$$ off I'll tell ye, and each of the three little micro-adventures in this collection play differently! The first is the longest, and the last is the trickiest. If I recall, the second, with the spiders, is the shortest? The filters are nice, but they do not change the ZX-Spectrum vibes of the adventure at all. There's some cool meta about a fictional developer below each of the filter selections. So you can play on a different screen, you see, with a different palette and different stuff in the background. Very cool, Kanye, but where is my dirt-floored favela hovel? Where is my filthy cat palace trailer with threadbare carpet? Where is my grungy sex dungeon basement? Points off, points off! (Nah, but I love it. It's a good little game! And I bought it for like what, a measly dollar on sale? A single U.S. dollar can't even buy me a Skor bar!)
