Hegemony Gold: Wars of Ancient Greece

I bought this game's hard copy as a 14-16 year old like 15 years ago at Gen Con. At the time, I was starting a life-long interest with ancient history. This game was an INCREDIBLE part of my early development, and I went on to study Classical History at University. During that time, I learned just how painstakingly accurate, beautiful, and incredible this game is. Phillip of Macedon - as I and the game devs agree - is far more interesting than his son, Alexander the Great: a self made man, a diplomat-warrior, a true genius. I bought this copy on steam just to have it in my collection, and to be able to review it to thank the devs. If you want to learn history WHILE playing an awesome RTS game, this is sick. You follow the real life achievements of Philip (more or less) in the order he did things.

Unlike traditional RTS games, Hegemony Gold doesn’t just focus on battles—it challenges you to think like a true commander. You move your armies seamlessly across a vast, open map, engaging in real-time combat while simultaneously managing your empire. But brute force alone won’t win you wars. The game’s economy and logistics systems are just as important as your battlefield tactics. One of the game’s standout mechanics is the way it handles supply lines. Your troops require food, and without proper logistics, even the strongest army will starve before reaching the battlefield. Managing farms, cities, and supply depots is just as crucial as planning military campaigns. The ability to build roads to create a supply network adds another layer of strategic depth, making infrastructure as vital as your soldiers. The game offers three historically accurate campaigns, immersing you in the conflicts of ancient Greece and Persia. If you prefer more freedom, the sandbox mode lets you take control of one of 26 different factions, including numerous Greek city-states, various barbarian tribes, and even the mighty Persian Empire. This variety ensures endless replayability and strategic possibilities while you try to dominate the entire map. Beyond warfare and resource management, Hegemony Gold also features diplomacy options, allowing you to form alliances, negotiate truces, and manipulate rival factions to your advantage. Careful diplomacy can be just as effective as military conquest, adding another layer of strategic depth to the experience. A particularly unique mechanic is how the game handles morale—when enemy units suffer low morale, they retreat rather than fight to the death. Even more interesting, you can enslave retreating troops to boost your economy, making conquest a tool for both military and economic expansion. One of the game’s most unique battle mechanics is its battle formations and "overcrowding". Proper formations and outmaneuvering will win the day. Also, If you stack your military units on top of each other without proper formation, they become overcrowded, reducing their battle efficiency. This encourages strategic troop placement and rewards well-organized formations over simple brute force. It’s worth noting that Hegemony Gold has a steep learning curve. New players may find the mechanics overwhelming at first, especially the logistics and the "hunger" parts, and the game can feel extremely difficult in the beginning. However, once you understand its concepts, the experience becomes incredibly rewarding. This is a game that rewards mastery of its mechanics, making long-term play highly satisfying. Overall, Hegemony Gold is a hidden gem that blends grand strategy, real-time combat, and deep logistical mechanics. If you enjoy immersive strategy games with historical accuracy and innovative mechanics—and are willing to put in the time to learn its intricacies—this is a must-play.

This is such a great game. It is similar to Total War but with simpler options and non-stop management. The setting is amazing in ancient Greece. The biggest issue is crashing. I have been consistently crashing every 3~4 hours sometimes on its own and sometimes when saving, which I guess is fine as I do not need to spend all day in the game. The bigger issue is that the save file can become corrupted when doing so, losing hours of progress. Autosave is a must, but there does not seem to be any clear reason or solution to the crashing. Still an amazing game!

Very fun game to represent the time of Phillip of Macedon. Easy to pick up, hard to master.

This has grown to be one of my favorite games of all time. The simplicity, the uniqueness, the immersion, all come together to create an unforgettable experience.
