This is the definition of mixed bag. Art style and atmosphere is amazing. Graphics are great for a 2012 game, effects and carnage you can cause in a firefight are pretty glorious to behold. Sountrack is pretty cool, fits the whole cyberpunk style. HOWEVER, this is one tough cookie to swallow. Level design is pretty ♥♥♥♥, there's a lot of tight corridors with a little room to dodge or wiggle and this is arena shooter style of game. This leads to a lot of frustraiting deaths just because you are having a hard time dodging incoming attacks. Movement is sluggish and feels half baked. It's floaty and weird. Jumping is practically useless. Leads to alot of frustrations, especially if you are trying to get to some of the secret areas. Weapons, while cool in concept (you start with 2, but by upgrading them you can get as much as 10) are mostly pointless. Enemies don't have any obvious weaknesses to any particular kind of gun, so why use most of them when you can get RPG and Railgun combo and just spam that till you see the end credits. Speaking of enemies, there's like 5 of them, by the level 3 you have seen the whole roster. Cool designs. Game is pretty short, you can run through it in maybe max 4-5 hours. Story is there, but hell if I remember what happened in it, something about machines attacking human city, some kind of conspiracy, AI shenanigans... Hidden city? AI General for the machines? The Corporation doing something? Difficulty. This game is pure ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. On difficulties higher than normal, enemies become bullet sponges that can take 2-3 rockets to the face and still come for seconds and their attacks become almost undodgeable. If you think that incoming attack will not hit, think again, because it WILL hit. Combined with claustrophobic level design this game turns into trial and error type of experience. And while most of your arsenal is basically useless, RPG and Railgun combo being practically only viable option, they are so underpowered it takes multiple shots to kill even easiest of enemies. Also, while I praised the graphics earlier, I got a bug multiple times in my playthroughs where maps loaded in incomplete, as in I could only see my gun, items and skybox. The rest was invisible. Quickest fix was to restart the whole game. Honestly I just finisned it for achievements and even the last secret one bugged out for me, so I had to RESTART THE WHOLE GAME just to get it. Redux version came out and apparently it's better and more balanced, so unless you are a fan of having a bad time, skip this.
6/10 Old school shooter with weapon upgrading and destroying environments. There are few annoying moments, like: * you missed secret you cant get back to it, next save - point of no return usually. * transparent walls - you just cant go through because of textures bug. * autosave only - no quick save
.
Not the worst but I don't see myself playing this again. The game was made some of the guys who made Painkiller a wonderful FPS from the 2000's. So my expectations were high. This game has a lot of hard spikes even normal, some areas will take multiple attempts till the enemies and your aim line up just right. I get the concept your a human taking on enemy machines so of course your at a disadvantage and they take way more punishment than you, but it makes for a very maddening gameplay loop. The big ones who like to charge at you are especially annoying since their charge does a lot of damage and when they put more than one in an area I keep getting blind sided by the second one after dodging the first, most of my deaths came from them. The bosses expecially brutal since they have different phases and summon enemies to attack you while they attack you. The game has explosives and electrical panels everywhere in the environment which is handy since enemies follow you everywhere, at first, later on certain enemies have weaponry and tend to shot from afar so I always resort to just using my gun anyway, in bigger fights its irritating to take damage from enemies while your focused on the ones running up to make your acquaintance. I also wonder why the explosives from barrels and propane tanks do more damage than my gernade launcher though? Its the type of shooter where every encounter leaves you drained of health and ammo and where you need to think on your feet and make use of your environment and the equipment at your disposal, much like Painkiller the lore and story are nothing to write home about, the story is told is a post apocalyptic humanity vs machines. I'm guessing? It dosen't do a good job of explaining its world leaves me with questions? It abrubtly ends and leaves opening for a sequel I don't think were getting its been 14 years. The game does not let you quick save, at all. You're at the mercy of the autosave That would have helped especially with the final boss and his three phases, you can't even change the difficulty mid game. Finally some of the weapons and equipment I found useless, like the shot gun and slow mo when your on last bit of health. The game is descent but I'm left disappointed. Vanquish is more fun than this if you want a game for shooting robots.
