Halftime Heroes | Perfect Game Review
(100% Completion at 2 Hours)

Halftime Heroes made me question if I was playing a game or just babysitting my keyboard. Gameplay: If you’re looking for engaging, responsive combat, this game ain’t it. Halftime Heroes leans heavily on idle-style progression, meaning you’re more of a passive observer than an active participant. At times, the builds can get interesting but after a few runs, it just felt like I was watching numbers go up instead of having fun. ★★☆☆☆ Graphics: Its basic pixel art gets the job done, but doesn’t impress. Enemies and environments lack variety, and it never really evolves into anything visually exciting. ★★☆☆☆ Sound: Although the soundtrack exists, the music loops are repetitive and forgettable. There’s not much else in terms of audio design to elevate the experience. ★☆☆☆☆ Story: Non-existent, which isn’t always a problem in these kinds of games, but it makes the grind feel even more hollow. There’s no worldbuilding or narrative hooks to keep you invested—just an endless loop of survive, upgrade, repeat. ★☆☆☆☆ Replayability: To its credit, Halftime Heroes offers plenty of permanent unlocks and a variety of build combinations to try. If you’re the type who enjoys watching passive upgrades accumulate over time, there’s some replay value there. However, the lack of engaging mechanics meant I had little reason to keep coming back. ★★☆☆☆ Final Thoughts: Halftime Heroes tries to ride the Vampire Survivors wave but forgets to bring the fun. The idle mechanics drain any real excitement, and with no style or substance to carry it, it’s hard to stay invested. I do find it strange that it mostly has positive Steam reviews. Perhaps Steam users really just love cheap, easy 100% achievement games.
Overall Rating: 3/10, would rather idle in real life than in this game.
Halftime Heroes is yet another unabashed ripoff of Vampire Survivors, and I guess the theory behind this one is that gamers would prefer an asset flip over pixeltrash graphics. Well, I think asset flipped assets look a lot better than pixelcrap, but there's more to ripping off someone else's game than just trying to make the visuals look better (and, when unable to make the visuals look better, using someone else's assets and claiming them to be your own work, which is what's happened here). Two notable criteria for what makes an asset flip instead of legitimate use of stock assets are whether those assets comprise the majority of the game, and whether the "developer" properly credited the people who created most of the assets in the game. This game fails both of those tests. The "developers" here didn't credit any of the artists and real, actual game developers who created the assets here, so this is plagiarism, as well as cash grab shovelware. Most of the game assets are from an asset creator called SURIYUN, so while the "developer" here refuses to credit the actual creator of much of the game, I'll go ahead and do that. In fairness I think this might just be a case of a developer who doesn't understand it's wrong to claim the work of others as their own, because there's no evidence this is a malicious asset flip, I think they genuinely thought they could just make a ripoff of someone else's game concept with someone else's game assets and it would be okay. People wouldn't notice, you know... but we do notice. As mentioned this is an autobattler, a ripoff of Vampire Survivors, this one was designed for the Nintendo Switch but was (badly) ported over. Gameplay consists of moving around and collecting upgrades while your autoattacks kill waves of enemies. A kiting simulator. But it's not as good as Vampire Survivors. The thing about imitations, as this is, they almost always fall short of the creation they're trying to ape (and profit from). That's definitely the case here. The various attacks and progression flow in Vampire Survivors is pretty good, credit where it's due (I don't recommend Vampire Survivors because of the bad graphics, but they nailed many other aspects of game design which explains the viral success). Here, the autoattacks are annoying and a bit nonsensical. Most of them seem to be centered around leaving a "bomb" behind you which explodes (well, a hammer falls or whatever). It doesn't work as well as the various projectile attacks in other Vampire Survivor ripoffs. Monster waves are uninspired and uninteresting... movement is clunky, oh, and the optimisation... even on my high end rig the game chugs, no attempt was made to optimise this from the Switch-centric design. The game features low-polygon "retro" assets with cartoony, mobile app style shader effects, making this look like a barely functional mobile app from 15 years ago. This visual style is a method that lazy devs often use when they have a lack of interest/capabilty to create highly detailed, high poly models and instead use shader effects to disguise that shortcoming under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It's far below the state of the art visuals gamers expect as a result of their decisions. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The game never really caught on with the millions of gamers on Steam, with a very low peak player count close to launch, and then just a handful of players launching this game every couple of days. This is undoubtedly caused by factors such as those raised in this review. It's always helpful with buying decisions to consider how popular and successful the product is, and unfortunately while this did accumulate a few participation trophy reviews, overall, people just aren't using it. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Halftime Heroes is relatively cheap at $3 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, the uncredited plagiarism, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer brazenly admits they're plagiarising... they took someone else's assets, and did not credit them. Gamers are not supposed to "guess" if a developer didn't actually create the assets in their game. When developers do this, they position themselves as having their name against those assets... it's 100% plagiarism. If they used someone else's work in a Hollywood movie and didn't credit them, they'd be sued into the ground and never work in the industry again. They're tacitly telling gamers because this is their game, the assets are also theirs. We also know that this is deliberate. It's easy to include a simple credits page. Why would the developer deliberately choose not to do this, if not to hide the true origin of the game assets from gamers? Claiming the work of others as your own, failing to credit the work of others, is highly unethical, and the developer here now openly admits to it! Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the objective facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I cannot recommend this game to anyone.
Halftime Heroes is a Bullet Heaven/Survivors game with some interesting mechanics and customisation across the board. I've had quite a bit of fun despite some of the elements being rather bland, mostly sound effects/graphics, but at it's core the gameplay is satisfying, although rather easy. The music is alright. The game has 3 different type of permanent shops (one of those which are 3 additional stages), you can loot items, you can customise your character (graphically and mechanically) and you can combo spells into ultimates. Now, I won't say the game is perfect, nor is it the best of it's genre, but especially considering it's super low price, I was expecting a lot less. The gameplay is fluid at a stable 60 FPS, I've had 1 single drop in FPS and it lasted a few seconds, even with hundreds of spells at once on the screen. Also for some reasons, sometimes assigning stats to my character in-game before assigning skill points wouldn't save the stats when resuming the game, but reassigning them worked fine. Weird bug. Another thing, the balance is all over the place. The first 50 waves are a stomp and then the game becomes much harder. Some ultimates are weak, some are utterly broken. Ultimate Booster gives 300 stats+150 stats every times you get it again (you start with around 6 stats) and Ki Strike literally one shots anything including bosses every 0.5 or 1 seconds. All in all, Halftime Heroes was enjoyable to me and with the price in mind, (I got it for around $1), it was fun!
boring...no real challenge at first then........boom your dead out of the blue.
Halftime Heroes, developed and published by Bigboot Studios, is an energetic and chaotic survival rogue-lite action RPG that blends elements from the increasingly popular "bullet heaven" subgenre with familiar fantasy RPG mechanics. At first glance, it may appear to be another entry in the long list of games inspired by Vampire Survivors, but it carves out its own identity through class-based progression, randomized loot systems, and a fast-paced gameplay loop designed to be both accessible and addictive. The game throws players into increasingly crowded arenas where hordes of enemies rush toward them in endless waves. Instead of wielding weapons directly or executing flashy combos, combat is largely automated—abilities fire off on cooldowns, and movement becomes your main method of survival. The player’s primary focus shifts to dodging attacks, strategically maneuvering through enemy clusters, and collecting XP gems and loot drops. This hands-off combat style might feel simplistic at first, but the layering of power-ups, gear modifiers, and class synergies adds surprising depth as each run progresses. One of the most appealing aspects of Halftime Heroes is its variety of character classes. There are six in total—Warrior, Wizard, Rogue, Monk, Cleric, and Ranger—each with unique strengths and passive advantages. The Warrior, for example, thrives on durability and melee range attacks, while the Wizard offers longer-range spells and magic-based AoE devastation. The Cleric introduces healing and support mechanics, while the Rogue benefits from high critical damage and loot-focused bonuses. These distinctions give the game solid replayability, as every class demands a different strategy and playstyle. The game’s roguelite structure supports a loop that’s designed to reward both short-term risk-taking and long-term progression. Each session, players gather experience, coins, and loot, which they can use to unlock passive upgrades, improve base stats, and occasionally reroll for better item drops. The “roll for luck” feature adds a gambling element to loot acquisition—risking lower-quality items in exchange for the possibility of significantly more powerful gear. It’s a mechanic that encourages experimentation but also makes some runs feel wildly unbalanced depending on how lucky (or unlucky) you are with the RNG. Graphically, Halftime Heroes doesn’t attempt to dazzle. Its visuals are serviceable but far from cutting-edge, relying on a 3D low-poly aesthetic that feels functional more than stylish. Enemy designs are basic, spell effects are minimal, and environments tend to repeat after a few runs. It may lack visual flair, but the clarity of effects and readability of enemy patterns are practical strengths, especially when the screen becomes flooded with dozens of on-screen enemies and projectiles. The soundtrack and sound effects also fall into the “functional” category. There’s a consistent beat to the music that matches the action, but it rarely stands out or enhances the emotional tone of a run. Sound effects for abilities and enemy deaths are satisfying enough, but can become repetitive over time. These elements don’t detract from the gameplay, but they also don’t elevate it. A little more personality in the audio design could go a long way in reinforcing the game’s identity. While the game offers a decent amount of content for its low price point, there are areas that feel undercooked. Boss battles, for instance, lack complexity. They tend to be damage sponges with predictable attack patterns, which makes them more of a stat-check than a true test of skill or strategy. Similarly, the difficulty scaling isn’t always consistent—some runs feel overwhelming early on due to unlucky gear drops or poor class matchups, while others are almost too easy once you stumble upon a game-breaking synergy. Still, Halftime Heroes succeeds where it matters most: it keeps you coming back. The quick turnaround of runs, the randomized upgrades, and the permanent progression system combine to create a feedback loop that’s difficult to resist. You finish a run, win or lose, and immediately find yourself thinking, “What if I tried the Monk with that fire-based relic?” or “Next time, I’ll invest more in movement speed and AoE cooldown.” That constant experimentation gives the game its staying power. In the end, Halftime Heroes isn’t trying to be revolutionary. It’s a game that knows its niche, delivers consistent gameplay satisfaction, and lets players dip in and out of its systems without demanding a huge time investment. For fans of rogue-lite survival action, it offers a fun and budget-friendly alternative with just enough depth and variation to warrant repeat playthroughs. While it has room to grow in terms of polish and presentation, its core gameplay is solid, fast-paced, and—most importantly—fun. Rating: 7/10
5/10
Fun if you hunt achievements, otherwise boring and not challenging. Would only get it if it's for sale.
As a huge fan of survivor-like games and despite buying this a few years ago, giving this a shot now was a giant waste of time. It's absolutely NOT challenging whatsoever. Within a few levels, I was overpowered quicker than I have been in any other game. It turned into an AFK simulator. I actually found myself actively trying to die and thankfully, I was finally able to. The reroll function didn't seem to work. The added stats like intelligence, strength, etc. didn't seem to really add anything, aside from HP regen from strength. The "waves" happen far too often and don't seem to add any more enemies or too much variety. The bosses were a joke, killing them in one shot. I played the Mage and have zero interest in unlocking any other character, progression or levels. The first level is rather small and boring. I normally don't write reviews for games, but after this waste of time, this all needed to be said. Save your money and time and try out other successful and better games in this genre.
