Mine & Slash is a part mining game (obviously) and yes you guessed it slashing as well (the combat slashing of course) set in a colourful town next to a set of dark and dangerous dungeons to explore.
The game looks, feels and play like a mobile / tablet game for the most part, but as its been ported to PC, a gamepad is highly recommended, you can also play with keyboard and mouse if you prefer.
You start the game accepting a quest to rescue someone, enter a dungeon, mine as much as you can carry, fight some enemies then return to town to sell your resources, the combat & mining is very simple and returning to the town is frequent due to your bags becoming full, your character often tells you about upgraded bags but during the review stream I didn't see the option to buy or upgrade these, this would be essential as the frequent portal to town, then return to the mines does become repetitive and a bit frustrating after a short while.
Despite the repetitive nature of the game, and the combat being fairly simple, it was also fun and never too difficult or that challenging in the mines, even the first boss fight was easy, as with most boss fights you earn lots of loot and money.
It`s not long before you can upgrade your gear, buy magic spells and accept more quests, some can be repeated.
The spells range from flaming meteors to ice bombs and all sorts, they are on a cooldown during combat so you cant spam them constantly, I would say they are essential for boss fights and the arena.
Your general gameplay loop is repetitive and simple fun (as I stated above), wont be for everyone but that's what this game is, mine, sell resources, fight, upgrade, rinse & repeat.
The town will also be upgraded over time with new buildings and things to do, and while in the mines you eventually have to pay for bridges to be built, these unlock your next route through the mines, there is often a choice of path to take, fortunately there is a dungeon map so you can continue where you left off.
Gems are used to upgrade and speed things up (like micro transactions) but you don't have to pay for anything with real money so don't worry.
You can change your characters weapons and armour, merge them to mix and match weapon stats, break them into resources needed for upgrading and also level them up.
There is a blacksmith for levelling up your weapons and armour, a wizard that sells potions, a shop to sell stuff, you can also buy and upgrade spells but this requires gems not coin.
Side stepping for a minute to discuss the graphics and sound, mine & slash has a "cute and colourful" look to it, a cartoon look to the graphics some might say, bright and cheery outside and dark and luminous in the dungeons, sound is your useful combat sound effects, a little bit of chat from your main character and others, he sometimes sings a tune or tells you to get a bigger backup (Yes I know I WANTED ONE!)
Not long into the main game an arena opened up, this offers wave after wave of increasingly tougher enemies and then a boss, if you complete it you get a big reward, if not you can try again, I found that with just 3 health potions it was too tough on my first attempt and left it.
For those of you who are looking for a simple, chilled, fun RPG, Mine & Slash could be for you, for those looking for a more challenging RPG experience or rogue-like, best to look elsewhere.
Despite the simplistic combat and repetitive nature, I had fun playing Mine & Slash, which ultimately is what we are all looking for I assume?
