[th] Review by Sven Evil - Steam's best local 4-player curator! See 100s of more local 4-player reviews at my curator page! [/th]
This game was a nice surprise! When I saw that the download size was just 7 megabytes, I did not expect anything. At least it was downloaded and installed immediately. Then I began to play, single player. Just score attack, you cannot win. Your aim is just to survive and get as many points as possible, while you have some small objectives to reach before you die. Looking at the graphics... quite retro. Gameplay... somehow fun, but simple. Will get repetitive very soon. So I played... and hey, there are different attacks from the boss. There are different objectives to reach. This is not as repetitve as I feared, far from it. The boss has at least a dozen different attack modes, and you have to adjust to them which makes for a varied gameplay. Cool! Then I played with 3 friends. And what happened? It was fun! Great fun! Due to the automatically and randomly (?) changing game modes, there is always something different to do. Rounds are short (most of the time), so the game in local multiplayer never becomes boring even when you are always the first one to die. A new round is always soon starting! X-Box One gamepads are supported. Conclusion: Simple skill-based action game with short rounds and a lot of fun in local multiplayer!
Follow our curator page: IndieGems if you like and want to see more reviews like this one.
Gyro Boss DX is a single-action (movement) dodge-em-up with the sole goal of surviving as long as possible. Every run ends up disaster, the real question is how long you can survive. The game is fairly casual by action standards, because you literally move clockwise or counterclockwise around a circle. The "Boss" in the middle attacks you with flurries of weapons and he never gices up until you are dead. The concept is simple and the game sounds like it might be not so exciting. But the boss has a myriad of weapons that he throws at you and the game really generates a good "one-more-time" mentality in which you try to beat your best score. Currently there are no Steam leaderboards, which is a shame, because that would be another reason for a lot of players to try to one-up each other through Global scores or friends' scores. I hope this will be in the discussions for future updates, but the game is a full-release, and not Early Access, so possibly this is exactly how it will stay. The game does not have achievements, but rather 50 in-game objectives. Only 3 are available for you to achieve at any given moment. So even if you achieve the marks set in the other objectives that are not yet available, you will not be credited for it. Whenever you accomplish a task, a new one would pop up for the next run. (It would be nice to have Steam achievements for the 50 in-game objectives though.) The download file is 7 MB, it's amazing the kind of "fun" that can be packed into such a small package for today's gaming standards. Of course there's nothing fancy about the game's graphics or music, so I am glad that there are some games that still get condensed into such small packages. Even though I say nothing fancy about the graphics or music, they are both pretty nice. The graphics is in a blocky retro-style pixelated with some simple but effective animations. The music tracks tend to repeat quite a bit, but it maintains that high intensity for gameplay. Expect to die a lot, because that is how every run will end up, no matter how good you are. As for me, I have played 70 runs so far in approximately 1 hour of having the game running, so you can get a pretty good idea of how often I get my self destroyed. There is a local multi-player option, which would pretty neat to sit back and have a few laughs with a few friends, if you have enough gamepads to play. I did not try this out, but it looks pretty neat. Here's my first half hour or so diving into this game: https://youtu.be/-yvHy5cJeV4
Gameplay
Move clockwise or counterclockwise to avoid an never-ending barrage of attacks by the "boss" in the middle.
Controls
Keyboard or Gamepad. I played with a gamepad and both the D-pad and joystick work flawlessly. You can customize the controls with 3 options, with left or right being either clockwise or counterclockwise. The third option is to move the sprite toward the side of the screen that you are pointing. I prefer the one where you are moving counterclockwise using "left" and clockwise using "right." This way I can in general stay in the lower portion of the screen to have a general feel of a shoot-em-up and have left and right be appropriately oriented. Of course I will go and rotate to the top half of the screen if necessary.
Graphics
Simple, pixelated graphics with a few effective animations.
Music
High-intensity, and fun to listen to. But too few tracks, so could get very repetitive quite quickly.
Audience
Great for score-chasers. Really bad for people who don't like to die in games.
Pricing
$4.99 USD base price with current launch discount of 20% to $3.99 is quite reasonable. (You will have plenty of time to change your mind if you decide that you don't like the game and want a refund. You will get a full view of the game within that time limit.)
Positives
+Fun gameplay +Super easy to learn +Good score-chasing and one-more mentality +Arcade look and feel +Colorful but not oversaturated +Short games, great for small sittings +Local MP modes, look to be fun (untested) +Controller works perfectly (tested with DS4 and XB1) +Reasonably priced
Negatives
-No Global Leaderboards which I consider crucial for these survival arena type games -No achievements but has in-game objectives (should be easy to add in, and would draw more players) -Personal gripe is that the hitbox generated by the explosion animations are a bit too large, and if you happen to get caught in the smallest bit of it, it's game over. I wish the explosions are a bit more forgiving. -Would be great to have online MP functionality too. I can see myself having a lot of fun with a few friends in short sittings if that ever get added.
Conclusion
Gyro Boss DX is an indie game in the form of a dodge-em-up with the only possible end to every run being death. The game is super easy to learn and also supports local MP up to 4 players. It's reasonably priced and offers a good amount of fun factor. Could use some improvements, but good as it is currently. While it's not for everyone, you can easily check it out without risk if you purchase from the Steam store page (within the refund time limit, you can easily see everything this game has to offer.) In its current state, I would rate it 7/10.
I received the product for free. I did not receive any compensation to write this review. ive always loved the original version and this is a huge imrovement! i do miss the old, mobile version's aesthetics, perhaps an "old-school filter" could be added in the future? 8/10
When I started this game and looked at the clock at some point, it was already an hour later. Quite an addictive and simple little game. Get as far as you're able while dealing with any 1 of several types of obstacles. Each type lasts anywhere from 5-15 seconds. The audio fits well with it. There are also 50 Objectives to give the player a sense of progression besides just score chasing. In addition to this, there's a local co-op option with some unique modes as well. Maybe not quite worth it at the full $5 price, it's a good deal on sale.
Not good. #1 for a bullet hell the game is insanely slow and easy. I survived for 5 minutes my first try and just ended up killing myself (in game) on purpose because I got bored. Its possible that I just got a "lucky" set of easy patterns, but I had zero interest in continuing to play in the hopes that maybe it would get slightly harder. #2 Frame rate, for whatever reason it seemed like maybe i was playing the game in slight slow motion. It looked like it was locked to 45ish FPS, and the gameplay trailer for the game looks to play way faster and smoother than what i was actually experiencing in game. For reference Im running windows 10, gtx 1060 6gb, i5-7600k, 144hz G-Sync monitor I tried setting my monitor to various refresh rates and resolutions and it didn't help. The game has no settings menu as far as I can tell. And tbh even if the game ran at 2x speed it wouldnt be much more difficult just because of how simplistic the patterns are. On the + side, the game looks like it could maybe be a decent party game with a group of friends, even then it is still way too easy IMO unless you made it into a drinking game lol.

just like the mobile version but with new stuff. would be nice if it had a online multiplayer. 4/5 fun stuff
This game is great fun! As a one player game, it gives a fast and satisfying arcade experience, ideal for those moments when you don't have much time to play or don't want to think too much about what you're playing. However as a couch multiplayer experience this game SHINES! The game sessions are very quick and intense, with a nice variety in the levels that you are presented with, and they are all very fun to play (although some of them I'd actually have liked to play almost exclusively - I'm looking at you "Civil War"!). If you want an idea of what to expect, think competitive multiplayer wario-ware. One of the only negatives I have though is the lack of customisable competitions... Party mode is limited to a random selection of levels, and I would really have loved the ability to create my own selection for playing, as - like the before mentioned Civil War level - I found some of the levels really begged me to play them again and it was frustrating sometimes to not have them come up often. That's a very minor complaint though, and I'd recommend this game to anyone that's looking for a fun party-game that doesn't take forever to play or require hours of practice and learning.
certified hood classic, good gameplay, very epic. 10/10
