NOTA: 7/10
It's alright. No Shovel Knight, as far as NES throwbacks go, but not everything can be Shovel Knight. It's quite short and some of it is a bit wonky (a lives system is probably something we could have left in the 80s), but the core mechanics are solid and the soundtrack is good. Worth a play, but unless you're *really* hankering for a NES throwback I'd wait for a sale or a bundle.

This is a 2D retro pixel platformer/hack and slash melee game where you control an orange pixel blob and jump around murdering blobs of other colours. Despite being released in 2016 the game is 4:3 instead of widescreen (could the developer only afford to use a CRT monitor found in a dumpster?) Ugly pixel graphics, lazy 2D gameplay in the 3D era, and a mismatched style as the developer goofed when trying for retro and didn't use retro "art" on the main menu which is just admission that they know they could have done better, but different. There's an inexplicable $8.50 price tag for this bundle filler trash.
5/10
This is certainly a game. It's not bad, but it's not really good either. I think I got this from a humble monthly bundle way back and never played it. Honestly, I wasn't really missing out on much. It's old and nostaligic-ish, but as someone who actually grew up with the games this is trying to emulate, it just doesn't really get what made those old games special. The game very much just uses the "idea" of the NES without any of the actual game design that went into those old NES games. I really wish there was a neutral option on Steam for games specifically like this one. There just isn't really anything to say about it. For me, looking at the price tag, I'm giving this a thumbs-down. It is just not worth the $6. There are longer, better, and more "NES accurate" games out there for less and even free. itch.io is a great place to find NES-like games for $1 or free with many of them being incredible experiences if you get one suited to your tastes.
Short and not terribly interesting. Go play this dev's "you have to win the game" or "super win the game". Those are quite good.
This game is not inherently bad, however, it has inherently bad design choices. Example, there are enemy placements which make them hard, if not impossible, to be able to dodge and do a no hit run. There is not enough money in one run, unless you know beforehand, that you need lava immunity in order to not take damage in the final dungeon. There are flying enemies that make it extremely hard to not take damage and fall. There are enemies place specifically in some spots to knock you back into instant death spikes. There are enemies placed in such ways that they can hit you off screen for damage. The game wants you to take damage, and will go out of its way to do so. The lives system is, in essence, not even needed, as you can just continue anyway, only you lose progress. It's an artifact of the time it's trying to emulate, but without the actual punishment of no continues by virtue of having a save system. The game is short, very much so if you know what you're doing. Even without it, you will get maybe 3 hours, if that, from the game, more if you're going for beating it under 30 minutes and keep messing up. This is not to say it's a bad thing, it's just something to keep in mind if you're going to consider getting it. This is a very edge case game for me. I'm very slightly more on the side of a recommend, but I wish there was a neutral option to select.
Gameplay: 3/10

Graphics & Sound: 4/10

Narration: 3/10
✔️ Minimalistic old school graphics and music that some people might enjoy. ✔️ The game seems to work without issues. ❌ The gameplay gets repetitive pretty fast in my opinion. ❌ Weird decision to make the first basic enemies you meet require to crouch to hit them, leading to peculiar issues such as not being able to hit the most basic enemy while standing on the top of a ladder... ❌ You might need to repeat huge parts of levels on death, that discouraged me from giving it any more time. ❌ The same seems to apply to game reloads - if you leave the game and restart it, you might have to go again through quite a bit of content. ❌ I'm under the impression that once you spend all your lives the game makes you restart from 0...? ❌ Didn't go through a lot of story but it seems very basic and uninspired. I might not be the public for this game, but I just saw no interest in keeping playing it.
Secrets are easily found, colors and textures are not easy to look at, and getting hit by enemies who are off-screen is a thing. The pink level, so I don't spoil anything, has a lot of instant death and hopefully you are really good at avoiding obstacles that cause instant level restarts. Good luck, but I do not recommend unless you plan on speedrunning.
