Such a fun little game! Most of the puzzles are based on music/sound elements. Those types of puzzles are the hardest for me for some reason :] But if you have a good ear, it will be a breeze!
Growbot is a small British indie game. Barely 5k people worldwide have even heard of this game, it is so indie it doesn't even have a Wikipedia page to check out for more info... It is a short (3h max) and easy (baby difficulty) point & click game with a wholesome story, beautiful hand-drawn children's storybook art and a selection of various puzzles. Based on all that, it ain't such a bad product, except one tiny nit-picky peeve: It keeps claiming to be a Biopunk game. It is literally plastered all over their website, Steam page and description. Biopunk here, Biopunk there, Biopunk everywhere! But I don't see any of it... "Biopunk generally examines the dark side of genetic engineering and depicts the potential perils of biotechnology." Growbot has nothing of that, in fact it fails the whole concept. If I would call it something, then I'd instead name it Whimsy-punk because how childish it is. "iNcReDiblY iMaGinAtiVe biopunk setting" yeah right my arse. I just discovered another point & click game released just this year called "Exit: A Biodelic Adventure (2024)" and it is as BIOPUNK as it gets. This is a children's game about humane robots. But unlike the endearing robots from "Machinarium (2019)", the growbots are fake robots just in name only. Why are they expressing feelings and behaving like such humans? It is unnatural and takes away from the setting. At first Growbot resembled that game "The Dig (1995)" as it too had multiple towers to explore and a lengthy playtime In Growbot we get lore on all 6 stations but explore a single one and barely visit another at the rushed finale when it abruptly ends with all the bad guys arrested and serving time.. No wonder the game can be completed in 3 hours, it could have been much bigger but alas the "stonks artest" and "stonks musishun" duo are no real game developers.. Not a bad game, but I hate the illogical and whimsical story. I disliked the musical puzzles but that is subjective. The art and genuine attempt is what forces my hand to leave a positive review.. (Steam please add more average/mediocre options ffs)
It takes about 3 hours to 100%, so it is a short game. I feel like that needs mentioning but honestly its a very fun and beautiful game. The music element was really well done and I loved the art style. Honestly I hope the ending was a sign there may be more from this universe because I would love that!
A fun point-and-click adventure game with some surreal sensibilities in world design. The puzzles are likely far too easy for genre veterans, but it's still an enjoyable experience. if the visuals and premise appeal to you, I'd say give it a go (on sale)--you'll have a nice, chill single-session experience.
NOTA: 10/10
An impressive-looking point and click puzzler, with a nice story to go with it, taking place in a biopunk space station. You control a young Growbot, which must save the station from a threat through interacting with various characters/environments and solving puzzles.
PROS
+++ Absolutely stunning graphics + Nice story that draws you in, even if the characters aren't really developed +++ Amazing character design, with each one having its own unique "voice" +++ Lots of items and characters to interact with - Even if they aren't all useful per se, they always help to convey the game's lore ++ Nice array of achievements, with two or three missables that you can get either by getting lucky, or by using a guide +++ You can save manually at any time - There are multiple save slots AND the game autosaves every time you solve a puzzle or unlock a new area ++ Decent puzzle variety, with the puzzle difficulty increasing as you progress in the game - Overall I would say that the puzzles range from fairly easy to medium difficulty, with one or two kind of hard ones
(I had the most trouble with the water cave maze and the numbers puzzle)

CONS
-- Pretty short (it took me about 6 hours to finish the game, but the actual time needed -without stalling like me- should be between 4-5 hours) -- Some of the puzzles are harder than they should, not in and of themselves, but because of lack of clarity about what the puzzle wants from you --- Super linear - There’s basically one way to move forward and once you leave an area you usually can’t go back to it - Not much of exploring - Most areas are small and are just there to contain the puzzles -- The game is unplayable for tone-deaf people, since many (not all) of the puzzles are based on musical notes --- The asking price of $18 is way too high for the amount of content
CONCLUSION
Obviously there was a lot of love and effort put in the game and it shows. I enjoyed the amazing visuals, the story, the character design and most of the puzzles. Some people say the puzzles are too difficult and others that they’re too easy, I found them to be just hard enough to not spoil the fun or hinder the immersion and flow of the game. All that said, the game IS pretty short and I feel that it’s not worth the absurdly high asking price. I definitely recommend the game for adventure and puzzle lovers, but get it on a decent sale. I’d say that 50% of the asking price is about right.
This game is very beautiful, and nearly impossible to play. The mechanics are hard to identify, non intuitive and difficult to follow, even with all the guides open on my phone.
