In a bizarre bazaar, there's a worried woman crafting entire universes in the palm of her hand.
Universe for Sale is a hand-drawn adventure game set in the dense clouds of Jupiter, where sapient orangutans work as dockhands and mysterious cultists strip the flesh from their bones in order to reach enlightenment.
Explore all the nooks and crannies of a ramshackle colony on Jupiter. Rickety tea houses, strange oddity shops, and overworked mechanics garages abound in the picturesque and infamous shantytown that's cropped up around the abandoned mine. Every new face, whether human, simian, skeletal or robotic, has a unique story to tell as they do their best to survive the acid rain pouring down.
The nameless master, intrigued by stories of Lila's ability to create universes, finds her on a rainy night to discuss the unique power that she has. For something so awe-inspiring, she explains it like she'd explain how to brew coffee. But it isn't just the master who wants to know more about Lila, who threatens to unravel the mystery at the heart of Universe for Sale.
So, choose a cup, find some ingredients and Lila will craft a universe down to your particular specifications. Only question is: You buying?

If you are thinking of buying this game, stop thinking and buy it. This game is by far the most criminally underrated videogame I have ever had the pleasure of playing. When I bought it, I did not expect anything close to the experience that playing this game is. Firstly, the art style is jaw-dropping, extremely cozy and perfect, every single character that you can talk to has an animated face sprite to give them more character and every one, no matter how irrelevant, has so much life and character breathed into them from the way they talk to the environments you find them in. Every location is drawn with such satisfying beauty that brings such an enjoyable experience with playing the game. The story had me confused at first (by design) but slowly piecing it together as I played was very satisfying and the ending left me very content and honestly wanting more. The gameplay is pretty fun, with unique puzzles and features as you play the story to break up the exploration and talking, which is split up very well so that you're never talking for too long. The main puzzle based mechanic is
universe crafting, in which there are an unbelievable amount of universe combinations, each drawn and with a story to it, which was insane to me.
If not the art, the world-building is what this game does best. From the religions to the environment and the weather, the people that fill it and the backstory to this world, everything is so well crafted and explained. When playing, this world absorbed me and I kept wanting to know more about it and its inhabitants. Finally, the soundtrack is pretty good, nothing to write home about but also works very well with the ambience of the game, as well as the ambient sounds being great, such as the rain and bustling markets. Overall, this game is the best indie game I've played so far this year and, as I said, the most criminally underrated game I have ever played. It is beyond clear to me that so much care and love has been poured into this game and they have crafted it to perfection. I implore you to purchase this game to support the developers and experience it for yourself, you will not regret it :)
Visually gorgeous, great initial building, lovely soundtrack. But the narrative gets dull after about an hour - tbh the plot just gets WEIRD at one point, gameplay is weak, and the final payoff isn't rewarding. Would have made an excellent comic book. Makes an almost-okay-ish game.
Look, I really can't stand the design of the main character, and I really really thought this was going to be another quirky variant of coffee talk or va11-hall-a. I was genuinely surprised to find a pretty nice point and click visual novel. Well animated, with a pretty artstyle. However the narrative falls apart pretty quickly, the title of the game and initial hook seems completely irrelevant to the story that happens, having a completely new hook and mystery. Then after that it bombs it's pacing and story to help build up this mystery that I can't imagine anyone being unable to guess within the first or second instance and it only gets more obvious the further it goes. Eventually the game actually bugged out on the power relay minigame. I hooked the red cable like it asked and it just didn't power the shop, I even went back rehooked to a wrong wire, talked to him, talked to lila, went back and rehooked. Just wouldn't progress. I ended up watching the latter half of the visual novel only to find that it takes about 3 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hours of this drivel before they finally reveal the extremely blatantly obvious twist, and why it matters. I get you need to build up the connection between the characters, the information between them and the setting, but at a certain point you should be using the characters to hook the player and not just dangle a carrot on a stick that's mostly unrelated. I'd rather that the story just allowed them to stop some of the issue sooner so that they could properly interact and discuss things more, which can lead to a more intense relationship rather than fluttering this off and on confusion mess for the entirety of the story until the conclusion. Which also just was just mostly a nothing-burger.
Verdict
👍 Recommended I played Universe for Sale for 13 minutes and I don’t want to continue. But I still recommend it for a very specific type of player: strong, truly eager, patient story-lovers who don’t mind a game with no voice acting and a longer time before the story really starts moving.
My history with the game

Played 13 minutes
Not finished
I don’t want to continue
I recommend it only for very patient narrative players

Quick signals
💸 Value: ✅ Great if you want atmosphere and story first 🖥️ Requirements: ✅ Low (light adventure game) 🎨 Graphics: ✅ Fully hand-drawn, very distinctive vibe 📖 Story: ✅ Strange sci-fi mystery on Jupiter, focused on characters and dialogue 🎮 Difficulty: ✅ Very chill, more narrative than challenge 🗣️ Voice acting: ❌ No voice acting (text-driven experience) 🐛 Bugs: ✅ No issues for me in 13 minutes ⏱️ Length: ✅ Around 4 to 6 hours depending on how much you explore
What I liked

The world and premise are unique: a colony in Jupiter’s clouds, bizarre characters, and a woman crafting universes in her hand
Hand-drawn presentation that clearly aims for a comic-like, artistic mood
It feels made for players who love slow, dialogue-driven storytelling more than “gameplay systems”

What didn’t work for me

I wasn’t hooked after 13 minutes, and I don’t want to keep going
No voice acting is a dealbreaker for me personally
The pacing feels slow, and it seems like it takes time before it really gets going

Is it an endless game? How long to beat?
Not endless. It’s a story adventure with a clear completion point. A developer mentioned it can take about 4 to 6 hours depending on how much you interact and explore.
Who will love it

Strong, eager story-focused players who are fine with no voice acting
People who enjoy slow-burn pacing and letting a narrative unfold gradually
Anyone who wants a weird, artistic sci-fi atmosphere instead of action

Replay value

Probably low to medium, mainly if you want to re-experience the story and atmosphere
For me personally: none, because I don’t want to continue after 13 minutes
What a wonderful game with a beautiful story and interesting characters.
Universe for Sale is a visual novel that blends classic storytelling with flashes of originality. Its visuals are stunning, and the game succeeds in captivating players with its galactic mystery. For those curious, the prologue is available for free on Steam, offering a perfect chance to see what Tmesis Studio has accomplished.
