If you want to read this vn because of girls from original trilogy, then don't do it
This vn is not about them. Heck, this vn is not even about Phantom trigger cast. This vn is about new third cast - class D of Mihama and some other employers of SORD. A lot of them had awful childhood and we need to help them overcome it. Typical usual Grisaia. Especially Ena's story was impactful, brutal and really had Grisaia vibe. So I can understand some people's disappointment because of rare appearance of original cast. But not me. I like Phantom Trigger and I like Chronos Rebellion too. These vns not on level of original trilogy, but still good for me. More I read - more I was hooked. Moreover original cast gets some action in later part of the game. But what a irony - some scenes with girls from original trilogy was most boring of all. Nevethless, I've always really liked the idea of having characters from all games of the series met together and I got it. (Now my dream is to have new SciAdv game in which all protagonists of the series met together and working against commitet). Somewhere I seen that Cronos Rebellion is finale of Grisaia, but ending doesn't seem like it. I guees we will see more Grisaia in future. I definitely waiting for it.

Grisaia Chronos Rebellion is a great game with a lot of weirdness.
After completing the main trilogy and the Phantom Trigger series, you want to see the interaction of all these characters. And partly Chronos Rebellion makes it possible to see it. But then you start to see more and more class D and you understand that the game is not about class A and class S at all. And at first it can cause dislike, but then you start to accept this fact, after which you start to be interested in the new plot of the game. Okay, the game isn’t completely about class D… sometimes we can see missions and chapters with classes A and S. Still, the new class D turned out to be not very interesting, but more annoying. And their interaction with other classes is rather strange. And I really wanted to see more Slice of Life moments along with the A and S classes. In addition to this, a lot of plot facts infuriates me personally. WARNING, SPOILERS ABOVE! How did the f***ing Flan hit the target from two kilometers when she was completely useless before? And after that Colonel says that the enemy team has a legendary sniper like Asako... No, Colonel, they don't have such a f***ing sniper, it's a story power. Thus, the developers simply humiliated Asako and Yuuji, putting the idiot bum Flan on a par with them. I hate the fact that Arata was able to defeat Haruto. How could the weak bum Arata do this? Haruto was a gigachad with a sword that could take out crowds of enemies with ease. And now a single opponent with a pistol stepped out in front of him… Yes, Arata had PeTS, but it's not strong enough to counter Haruto. We also need to remember the fact that Arata wasn't on active duty at that moment, which means he was weaker than before. Haruto apparently defeats Arata. I'll say more, Aoi Haruto defeats the entire class D alone without any difficulty. And it hurt me to read how Haruto loses to the weak Arata. I don't like that they weakened Rena, who just dealt with strong opponents quite quickly, but when it came to Serika with a shield, everything immediately went slowly. Rena can take down Serika in one minute and go to help Haruto. And in the game you can see a lot of such weakening of the characters. But L, on the contrary, was strengthened. She couldn't do anything before, but when the plot needed it, she turned into a soldier who could defeat anyone. And in general, the design of L and its character pisses me off. R is a much nicer character. And in general, the whole class D is annoying, but therefore you just accept this fact and stop swearing because of it. In general, it's like watching a typical plot with a new generation, and the authors begin to greatly underestimate the old characters to show new ones. And this turn of events annoys you. Well, I have no particular complaints about all sorts of fantastic oddities at the end of the game. Well, that's cool and weird. And one more thing... I feel like the main characters at the end of the game infiltrated the Cindereon base too easily. These villains are going to take over the whole world, but in the end they couldn’t cope with four of our heroes (assuming that these heroes are weak.) Yes, on the ship, the main characters could fight back with the help of the rest of the guys from class S and a few others, but after the destruction of the ship class D was left alone along with R (and even L did not help at that time). And… I mean... entrust the destruction of the base of some terrible and powerful villain to classes D and S? Class D already has a bad reputation, and Ichiru Sengoku knows quite a bit about class S, so there shouldn't be much trust either. Yes, class D forced Ichiru to make concessions, but it could have been done differently. Then again, they could have at least sent Class A to help. (during the battle only Haruto suffered, but the rest could well help). Yes, it was said that class A was sent to help, but they took too long to get there... But the ending after saving Yuuji made me cry. It was really good. After completing the main trilogy and Phantom Trigger, you remember the whole path that the Grisaia universe has gone through. You are shown old art with the music from the very first opening, and such a warm ending leaves you with pleasant emotions and feelings. END OF SPOILERS In the end, I still want to praise the developers for the work. The game has many new characters with a new storyline. It obviously took a lot of time and effort. And in the end, even despite a bunch of minuses, you remember the whole story you went through and rejoice that you had the opportunity to read it. The characters and events evoked emotions. Yes, sometimes they weren't very pleasant, but they didn't leave you indifferent, which means they fulfilled their role in the game. Thanks to the Frontwing team for the Grisaia Chronos Rebellion.
Kazami Yuuji needs to come beat up this beta cuck MC
TL:DR - Yes, play it. it's not the best VN out there, but it's not a waste of time and there is some uniqueness that you will be hard pressed to find elsewhere. - (this is a spoiler free review but I do mention how the plot/story intertwines with stuff in the game but not the contents of the actual plot so don't be alarmed if I mention anything about the plot!) - This review ended up coming out in a negative light but that wasn't really my intention. I want you to know before hand that I recommend this and what I mention are just nitpicks or just story beats that I explained in an awful way that came across negative. In the end I think that Grisaia is great despite it's faults. Even though I have a few mixed feelings on this novel, I am a huge fan of the Grisaia Series and want to spread it to as many people as possible, as I think it deserves more attention even with some of it's faults. As I was sitting here writing and deleting and trying again I just couldn't find a good way to go about how I feel about the game. As obvious from the positive recommendation I enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to anyone reading this review. (although if you haven't read the previous games [Fruit-Labyrinth-Eden-Phantom Trigger Vol 1-6] you will be severely lost so I recommend you check those out if you haven't already) I think what is stopping me from doing a normal review is the ending. STOP!!! now don't immediately think it has a bad ending a leave, because that's not true. Both the ending for the main plot (Class D) as well as the sub plot (Class S) are good and I did enjoy them but I think the game ended without doing some things that I hoped it would do. Now some of these were false hopes that I knew weren't going to happen but others I felt, while not necessary, would have been great plot points, character interactions, and overall would have made for an even more interesting experience. So what I'm left with is slight disappointment and a yearning for more. More specifically, Class S, the original cast of the first 3 novels. Since they were the sub plot of this story they got less screen time then the character of the main plot (Class D) which is fine. After all that is the main plot and Class S is the sub plot. (specifically around 10-15 hours of the experience was Class S while the rest was Class D). This is a hard topic to really talk about though because the plot/objective of Class S is intertwined with that of Class Ds. So technically Class S's plot progresses with Class D's plot but that's also false. Because even when something progresses in Class D's story, that doesn't necessarily equal progression in Class S's. Due to the nature of Class S's objective/goal while they can make progress in certain ways there is no concrete jumping from hurtle to hurtle that makes it obvious that they ARE progressing. Even though they technically are just by Class D literally existing. It's less them actively working towards the goal and more them stopping the trophy at the end from being obliterated by nuke. Due to this, Class S only really appears when they are needed in the story (so basically when Class D is in need of help). So due to THAT, Class S doesn't get much time at all for themselves (with exception near the end of the story when Class D's story is finished). So by the time Class D's story is done there isn't much time left for them. It's finally time for our lovely Class S to shine....... for less than half of the 10-15 hours of screen time they get. Don't get me wrong they had great moments during the main story but that was them assisting the main cast with their objective (even though it was just to protect their own) but now it's THEIR story. AND HERE is where my problems lie... There wasn't enough time for Class S. Those last few hours were amazing and is (in my opinion) the greatest example of what makes Grisaia great! It's not that the time before this was bad or didn't get it right. It had it's moments and again overall was a good experience worth your time. But there is something that comes out of the writing when the story is focused on Class S at the end that makes Grisaia truly Grisaia (at least in my opinion). I can't elaborate further without spoilers unfortunately so you'll have to take my word for it when I say. Even with all my complains I have written so far, I am very happy that I have read this and recommend it. Earlier in my review I said that I was disappointed and was yearning for more. while technically those are negatives, I don't view them as such. I see it as they have hooked me so well that I can't have enough. while it's true that at least a bit more would have been nice (specifically showing a bit more after the end credits roll a.k.a what they are doing now and what they are going to do) those are TECHNICALLY unnecessary and the story doesn't need them to be good or complete. If you somehow read through this horrific review, first of thank you for giving me some of your time, and second please give this a try. Especially if you are a fan of the girls from S Class, while they technically get shafted by the main story by being the sub plot, they still pop their heads in and light up the room every once in a while. enough to be worth your time and I promise you will enjoy those times. (as long as you aren't a complete Michiru hater like so many are) Edit: v.02 - Updated review with better grammar (Still not perfect, but better than before) - Broke up the huge paragraph into easier to read chunks - Removed stupid money to play time ratio ($1=1 hr/$40=40hrs)

Uhm, this review is going to be a tough one. tl;dr - I have mixed feelings about the game, and would recommend it only to people who liked both original trilogy and Phantom Trigger. I also would ask you to lower your expectations quite a bit. I'd say it's 6.5/10, which means it's my least loved Grisaia of them all. But I am still glad it exists. Disclaimer: Chronos Rebellion is a spin-off of Grisaia series, featuring the original cast as well as new characters, so it is impossible to write the review without mentioning the first trilogy, the second installation (Phantom Trigger) or comparing CR to those. The knowledge of these isn't necessary to understand the review, but the game is essentially a sequel (or sidequel) for both of the series. == Full review == Chronos Rebellion is a game with a twisted history, a game that itself rebelled against the universe laws, and leaped the time few years forward. You see, it used to be a gacha RPG for mobile phones released in 2020. Supposedly, it wasn't very successful, despite the influx of pre-registrations, as it suddenly was cancelled after running for just 9 months. The game was online-only, so back in 2021 I had my fears that its story will be lost forever when the servers were shut down. But Chronos Rebellion somehow survived. The complicated history of release and development certainly affected the quality of the resulting game and its standing among other Grisaia novels, though. To understand how, a brief look at the game's origins is a must. The first Grisaia game, Fruit of Grisaia, was released in 2011, with major sequels following in 2012 and 2013. Praised as a god-tier game, it was re-released multiple times (with and without H-scenes) and eventually translated to English. While the mood and the topics of the novel evolved with each new chapter, it still maintained a strong humanistic core and a questionable desire to explore human lust (though arguably in a more tame way compared to studio's other god-tier-game, SubaHibi). The second Grisaia installation, Phantom Trigger, began in 2014. Shock and horror, it did not feature the characters from the original trilogy, nor it contained any H-scenes. Instead, PT is just focusing on the very same humanistic core, perhaps getting the Labyrinth's ideas and developing them even further. Another change brought by PT is lack of branching narrative; each character is getting their own chapter and plenty of screen time, and you can tell this approach has pros and cons; you're bound to be interested in some of the chapters more than in the others. The game was released in multiple "volumes", between 2014 and 2022, with production quality generally staying consistent or increasing between the volumes. And now, Chronos Rebellion. It is hard to tell for an outsider when exactly it was conceived, and what place it meant to have in Grisaia universe, but we do know that it was first planned to be released in 2019. That places the game some 6 years after the completion of the original trilogy, and somewhere in the middle between Grisaia PT vol.6 and vol.7. That in turn means that CR is bound to have a tight link with the events of Fruit/Labyrinth/Eden, but doesn't share DNA with Phantom Trigger beyond common lore, as the latter (and meatier) chunks of Phantom Trigger surely weren't fleshed out yet. But while Chronos Rebellion is leveraging characters from the original trilogy much more than characters from the Phantom Trigger, it does the opposite with the narrative. Chronos Rebellion, at heart, is much closer to Phantom Trigger. No narrative branching, clear-cut (even if not labelled) character arcs, and - yes, you know it - the same core of "is it okay for me to live?" of children of war. Because of that, I feel like people who really liked Phantom Trigger will enjoy Chronos Rebellion somewhat more than those who prefer Fruit&Eden. So far we have determined that Chronos Rebellion is, indeed, a Grisaia game. But is it good? Well, it could have been a brilliant sequel. It could have, if only it had the budget and the full attention of developers. But the art style is inconsistent across the game, the writing and the pace is all over the place. Some arcs are clearly overwritten, and some direly need more writing, world-building and so on. The game doesn't shy to borrow assets from previous games, be it music, character sprites or backgrounds, and that also feels cheap, especially when those contrast with never arts. But you know what? If the choice was "this Chronos Rebellion or no Chronos Rebellion", I'll take this one, please. Actually, can I have two so I can give one to my friend? Because as things stand, it is still a solid visual novel, and it feels more shallow and less polished only compared to Fruit or Phantom Trigger. == Subjective notes after finishing the novel == Original cast: BIG YAY. The VA and the story related to the original cast are pretty great. New girls: small yay. I liked most of the new characters. But there's so many characters in the series, some of them start to look too similar to each other. PT cast: mixed feelings. I think CR makes a disservice to Phantom Trigger main cast, but does a very good job expanding the lore of the SORD. Art: mixed feelings. I prefer the style of PT over original Grisaia, but I didn't like that the new cast is overly sexualised. I don't know if CR was planned to be an eroge - after all, another Frontwing's Grisaia gacha, Barcarolla, has plenty H-scenes. Music: Good. Elements garden (I assume they did new tracks this time, too?) did a good job here. Though I wish there was a vocal track for this game. Plot: mixed feelings. Too predictable and too anime-like at times, with a fair deal of uncalled-for super-hero feats and deus exes. The pacing is off, and there's too little philosophy involved to my liking. The grand finale is palatable, though it is a bit random and silly.
