Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my initial impressions review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/mHdS4YdiaQc I bought this game on the Steam Winter sale for 40% off. At that price, I can give a very tepid recommendation here. This game has a ton of potential. However, it also has so many issues that I'm not sure it will ever meet its potential. The biggest issue currently is locomotion, it just doesn't feel good. I'm not sure what the problem is, but it's non-responsive at times. You just stop moving suddenly and have to try several times to get going again. Another issue is optimization, sort of. Game was running horribly when I first started playing. It is running on the Unreal Engine. However, I did go to the graphical settings and lowered everything to medium and changed DLSS to peformance mode and on my RTX 3080, I was getting mostly 90 fps, with a few frame rate drops, but nothing major. The other big issue is that seemingly everything is super clunky. Want to open a door? You just sort of touch it and it swings open. Want to do melee combat? Your hands on the weapon go all over the place and your weapon can start facing the wrong direction. Combat is also pretty basic. The good news is that you have several different weapons, including many magic spells, guns, bow & arrows, swords, maces, et.c The bad news is that they all feel clunky. The UI is horrible looking all around. The biggest positive is that the world looks massive. It is almost like Skyrim, a budget Skyrim with none of the polish. You do have full locomotion or teleportation available, along with snap turning. You can jump. You can climb anything. The world doesn't look HLA great, but it looks better than most VR games (sadly). Enemy animations / NPC animations are not good. However, the music does feel epic when you come across some enemies. Overall, I don't regret my purchase. There's a lot here, from combat, to planting trees, to building stuff, to cooking, to magic, to melee, to ranged combat. However, I don't know if this game will ever be good. I would only recommend this game to those okay with buying a game mainly to support developers and hopefully enough people support them so they can finish this project. We all know the outlook is grim for PCVR, especially EA games. Rate 5.5/10. Buy only to support the developers if you believe in them or are okay with losing money. There's a ton of potential here, but you're likely to roll snake eyes (we all know this).
If you enjoyed my review, please consider joining my Steam Curator Group.
I have been play testing this game since before the demo was released. Back when it was only available on the RFVR discord to test. This game has only been getting better with every update and the world keeps on expanding with new things to do and skills to level up. It's worth noting that this is a single dev at work and it's the first VR game he has ever made. A lot of the community feedback ends up in the game which is really awesome to see. This project is doing Early Access the right way which is very rare to find these days.
As a freelance tech critic who is new to the world of VR gaming, I was blown away by RFVR. This RPG adventure game is a true masterpiece that will transport you to a world of magic and wonder. The graphics are stunning, and the attention to detail is simply incredible. The game mechanics are intuitive and easy to learn, but there is still plenty of depth and complexity to keep even the most seasoned gamers engaged. The storyline is gripping and will keep you hooked from beginning to end. Overall, RFVR is a must-play game for anyone who loves RPGs and is looking for an immersive and unforgettable gaming experience and I can't really think of a better introduction to simulated experience technologies (e,g. Meta Quest II). Footnote: the updates and refinement of the game have been consistent/constant ever since i started playing and the improvements are a constant reminder that the devs are hard work to give you the best gaming experience possible.
pretty neat game. very obviously one persons passion project, and pretty much one of a kind in the vr space. Pros: -Decent combat (on the latest beta branch) -Very large open world -Decent graphics -Very in depth systems for pretty much everything -Lots to do -Multiplayer Neutrals: -Assets from the asset store (One guy is making this, it's not an asset flip) -AI voice acting Cons: -Horrible UI. It's really bad, and doesn't mesh with the game or have a 'style' at all -Bad animations for the ambient town NPCs. They zoom around and just look dumb -No seated mode -No seated mode -No seated mode These cons are just the typical symptoms of an ambitious game being made by one person, and hopefully can be ironed out in the future. What has already been accomplished here is pretty impressive and unique. Give it a go if you've got some friends or just want an open world VR RPG that isn't Skyrim. Please add a seated mode
I have been waiting for an open world VR experience like this for awhile. What I love about this game: -Huge open world map -Dynamic weather and day/night cycles -Nice sense of progression and leveling -Life skilling such as hunting, cooking, mining, and forging -Physics based combat -Large variety of weapons and spells to try out -Many enemy types -Tons of side quests -Co op support Between the expansive vistas, the epic fantasy music, and the medieval combat this game makes me feel like I am actually in Lord of the Rings. I can easily see myself spending hundreds of hours in this game over the next few months/years -- 100% worth the investment if you are a fan of VR and RPGs.
It is what the description tells you and it's super fun so far. I'm excited to see this grow and evolve!
The game seems pretty fun, but still needs some fixing up: 1) no way I can see to tell the condition of a weapon and if it’s close to breaking. This should be a second number above or below the base damage number on the weapon itself so you have some kind of idea what the weapon condition is in real time. 2). Need a YouTube tutorial on how to repair a weapon. I found the broken dagger and added a metal ore to it and got the flash. I tried adding a second ore and it just clinked against it. I put it in the forge fire for 30sec and then banged on it with a level I smithing hammer and nothing happens. Is this a glitch? 3) my weapons randomly disappear from my shoulder holster and sometimes my hands. Is that because it broke and just disappears or falls onto the ground and I don’t realize it because there is no way to monitor the condition of the weapon in real time? 4) How do you make parchment paper? I have not found a tutorial on that. Unless you can only buy it? 4) items like weapons and hammer often get stuck in the ground. 5) It would be nice to have a character progression bar. 5) I’m level 8 character and level 2 smithing but I cannot increase my weapon further in the forge with the level 2 hammer. The sword has already been forged once to 34 damage. Does my character level need to be higher? 6) for spells, if you remove a spell from the slot, is it gone forever? Do you need to keep the book you learned the spell from in a chest so you can always relearn it if you remove the spell from a slot? 7) is there a way to see all of your active quests without having to go back to the adventurer association building to look them up? How do you select an active quest to get a highlighted marker for it? Any information or updates needed for these items would be great.
Awesome Ideas. You get action, crafting, landscape, challange. The map is well made and the quests are fun. Voicechat works also great in MP.
Game has a bit of jank yes, but the dev is extremely responsive and the game is interesting enough to get some fun out of it, after posting in the steam discussions about a crash in multiplayer the dev had a fix deployed in less than 12 hours after the post, i believe the dev is very dedicated to this game and it will only improve from here.
