It all starts in Liberty City. With revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.

6/10 Positives: Soundtrack, fun characters, atmosphere and iconic (very "of its time"). Negatives: Dated design jank, sh*tty remaster (fixed mostly with mods), gang territory hostility, car health and tilting missions. Weirdly addictive and arcadey, for a 25-year-old game that makes you wanna throw your controller, you want to keep going. It's also a pretty short game. "Back when games were hard!" Nobody envies your childhood.
Grand Theft Auto III: Definitive Edition – Review 25 hours 22/29 achievements unlocked Completed July 2026 I originally beat GTA III on the PS2 back when it launched, so replaying it 25 years later was a pretty surreal experience. First, I have to give credit where it's due. I waited until Rockstar fixed many of the issues with the Definitive Edition, and the improvements are noticeable. Playing in 5120x1440 at 240Hz with ray tracing made Liberty City look better than I ever imagined it could. The updated visuals, improved shooting, and mission checkpoints all make this a much more enjoyable way to experience GTA III today. That said, GTA III definitely shows its age. The biggest frustration is the traffic. It genuinely feels like every car on the road is trying to hit you. Some missions also provide almost no guidance, leaving you to figure things out through trial and error. Even with the quality-of-life improvements, there were plenty of moments where the game's age became impossible to ignore. The story also didn't do much for me this time around. Claude's silent protagonist approach feels strange by today's standards, and while a few supporting characters are memorable, the overall narrative feels pretty thin compared to later entries in the series. Still, I'm glad I revisited it. It's fascinating to go back and experience the game that laid the foundation for modern Grand Theft Auto. If you've never played GTA III, I think it's worth checking out just to see where the series truly took off. If you've already beaten it years ago, though, I don't think you're missing much by leaving the nostalgia where it is. Overall, I'd give Grand Theft Auto III: Definitive Edition a 6/10. A solid remaster of an important game, but one that ultimately feels more historically significant than fun to play today.
I'm going to give this an updoot, however ONLY for how ambitious it was in 2001. 2026... How much did I complete? 100% This game is a dumpster fire, I was not having "fun" shortly after starting. I was relieved to hit uninstall. I will never play this game again. Story - weaker then a 2 year olds cordial. Vehicle Physics - Play like 1998 pinball. Combat - Not bad by any means. Map design - Its the one map they did better in the HD universe (Pending vice city) The story while yes there was "something" consists of bouncing around to different factions doing a couple of odd jobs then killing them. I think for the time and testing purposes this was fine, as shown with vice city the proof of concept (3) got the green flag and vice city was then shot out the ballpark followed by san andreas being shot across the country. You need to really pay attention to get any relevant story, the main antagonist arc will later have deeper meaning if your playing through the 3d games for the first time but behond that its very "Meh" Vehicle physics in this game is to put in nicer terms... absolutely infuriating. Most vehicles have the weight of a feather, traffic constantly turns into you, if your doing vigilante, the target never knows which way they're turning. More often then not you'll find your car upside down from the smallest thing. This means you WILL fail missions due to terrible driving physics often. Everyone hates you so fast. You go from nobody to worlds most hated in about 7 seconds. You would almost say this locks off parts of the map as 2 shotgun rounds will cause the car to explode making sections of the map almost impossible to pass or do any additional activites in. The Map - I never liked the design, very bland. Pathing average. This stuck out particularly doing firefighter side mission's in shoreside vale, as you'd often need to do 2 stunt jumps to cross the water just to get to the fire in time, One of which is not flat and forces your vehicle to rotate. Now we circle back to that infuriating vehicle physics that loves to put your vehicle upside down. Good times... Overall, for 2001... It pushed the limits, opened up a genre of great games. 2026 however, ALL the flaws stick out like neon glow. I would recommend if you MUST play them all, However if you dont mind skip to vice city, an infinitely better game. PS. Soundtracks Garbage.
This GTA is really boring. The city is small, there are no interesting points. I can understand it was a good game when the original edition came out, but now it's terrible
Yep, I've Been Drinkin' Again
To preface - I have never played the original, so I will not be commenting on anything to do with the remastering of this game. I'm sure this was a monumental and extraordinary accomplishment in 2001, however I cannot recommend playing this game unless you are genuinely interested in the concept of playing an old GTA game for the sake of it. The missions are boring, repetitive, and some downright unfair due to some of the quirks of old games - no checkpoint saves, vehicle damage, stiff driving, horrible combat system, etc. However, I enjoyed this sisyphean task of a game, and I don't regret playing it. Make of that what you will. 3/10
Selten ein so beschissenes Spiel gespielt
No es malo, pero tampoco bueno... Le doy "me gusta" porque me da penita Rockstar
I can safely that buying GTA III Definitive Edition was a good choice for me. A lot of people's criticism is aimed at things that were already in the original game. Some criticism were cars beings 1-shot, which they 'kind of' are. But there's context to this. After a certain mission the mafia gets hostile, that they're equipped shotguns. It takes 2 shots from a shotgun to explode your car. And If your car is already smoking, it'll get 1-shot. Other "criticism" is only talking about how 'superior' Vice City is, and never actually goes into what they like or dislike with GTA III. If you're looking for a GTA III feel, you'll get it with the Definitive Edition. The same unreliable car physics upon crashing the car. The same car handling as the original. All sounds effects being mostly the same. They changed the firearm system so you can aim, run and shoot at the same time with assault rifles. The biggest con that I saw myself after finishing the game was that it is true that a few of the mission cutscenes were not playing. The mission name is displayed but the screen is black until the cutscene is over, then you get back into the game. Takes some of the fun away if you're interesting in seeing the cutscenes, but you can always read the mission briefing on the pause menu, so you're not missing anything actual important. Overall, I have no regrets of buying GTA III Definitive Edition, it looks like GTA III, it feels like GTA III, it plays like GTA III. If you want GTA III, get this one if the money isn't an issue. I myself got it on sale. Stay healthy.
