Well, I wanted to give this one a try because it looked low-pressure. With no timers, no rush, just me and some tile letters trying to pay off an insane debt of 1,000,000,000. How much even is that? A billion? Holy frekklesticks… And for some reason, I now have the Austin Powers evil dude with the pink in the corner of his mouth in my mind. Hmm. Anywho. Review. Game. Digressing!
While I have heard of Scrabble before, I know it’s a game with letters, scores, and putting them down on a board. And that’s about it. And I was drawn to this game. Against my better judgment, since English is not my main language, and what I do know is all self-study. Which means the game doesn’t come without a challenge for me. There are a lot of words I know, but there are also a lot of words I don’t know. Sadly, there is no accessibility option or help for people who aren’t very strong in English. So that’s something to keep in mind if you’re interested in this game.
I was also taken by surprise a few times. Seeing how big the skill/upgrade tree was made my jaw drop, but at the same time, it’s also a true game-changer. What started off a little slow and struggle-ish for me soon turned into, " Hey, I’m getting more points” kind of thing. Which, of course, is a great feeling!
But there is also the surprise of which words count, like c*m and yet others like wh*re did not. Are they proper and kind words? No, not really? Probably not? But hey, they exist, and in this game, a point is a point to settle those debts, so don’t you go all judgey on me!
Besides the no accessibility or help for non-English peeps, the only other thing that bothers me, and this is entirely personal as it probably doesn’t bother most people, is that when I zoom out my grid, it doesn’t always stay zoomed out. When it comes to counting points, it zooms in and moves. I do wish there were an option to pin my grid so it stayed where it was, regardless of the count. Just for those moments, I’m not feeling the movement because I'm overstimulated and my brain feels the need to be weird about it with certain visuals and movements. But that’s just me being a little nitpicky, I guess.
So, somewhere between a lot of words I’ve never heard of and accidentally finding words, learning a few more and possibly forgetting about them again in x-amount of time, I do recommend this game. The super chill music, the relaxing ‘on your own’ pace pacing, the progression hooks. I’m having fun with it regardless of my English knowledge. It’s just a fun game, one that suckered me in. Maybe not to binge-play in one go, but enough to go in now and then when I feel like it until I play it out, aka pay off that debt.
So many upgrades and this is probs not even all of it yet o_o VS trying to English!
