Knotwords is a minimal and elegant logic puzzle — with words. Arrange each section so every word across and down is valid. It may look difficult at first, but you'll be surprised at how quickly you pick it up! This is the kind of game I've been trying to design my whole career — I hope you like it

Upon finding out about Knotwords, I was super excited to try it. It's a clever new type of logic puzzle, and kudos to the developers for coming up with it! Unfortunately, this bungles basically every aspect of the implementation. Here's what I found in under two hours. WALL OF TEXT INCOMING * The puzzles are just chock full of crappy words (BOLE), archaic words (OPE), fragments and prefixes (ISO), variant spellings, sigh-eliciting inflections (UTERI, AMPLER, GOLDEST)... you will run into at least one of these in every puzzle. Even in *their own screenshots* we have ALB, OHO, and "HO," which... come on, guys. Some of this stuff wouldn't even cut it in a crossword, and Knotwords puzzles are just so, so much easier to construct. * The puzzles are randomly generated and it shows. A creative constructor could have a lot of fun with Knotwords, but in the 50 or so puzzles I played, I saw no hint of authorship anywhere. Other Steam puzzle games at this price point are packed with smart, charming puzzles made with love and care; Knotwords, as far as I can tell, shipped with 0 (zero)! * Seeing complaints on the mobile app stores I thought: how bad could the input system really be? It's bad. The cursor jumps around erratically, even doubling back to filled squares when unfilled ones remain in a group. There should at least be an option to permanently enable the "crossword" input mode. * This game was clearly developed with mobile in mind and PC as an afterthought: there's no hotkey to continue to the next level in a puzzlebook, menus not present in mobile versions look slapped together, text aliasing makes the hints in larger puzzles hard to read even at 1440p, and the background is noticeably pixelated at desktop resolutions. * "Twist mode," to me, is a miss. For the dozen or so twist puzzles that I solved, I used the vowel hints maybe once, and otherwise never had to refer to them to correctly solve the puzzle. * "Each puzzle has only one solution!" claims the description, and yet... I solved this one with SI/SOT, just to make sure the worse solution would be accepted. I saw at least one more example of this. I bet there are more! This is kind of a nitpick, but kind of not, since uniqueness can otherwise be used to solve puzzles. I really want to like Knotwords, and my achievement problem will keep me playing it for a while, but... all this, two months after release? Unless you're enthralled by the concept, as I was, you should probably get your logic puzzle fix elsewhere.
I was gifted this game by a Steam friend for my birthday. I don't know if that qualifies as "receiving the product for free" for the purposes of the Steam review, but I've erred on the side of caution. I've played this game for 70 hours in a quest for achievements, and I guess I've gotten $12 worth of entertainment value from that. But I have to attach so many caveats to my recommendation, at least in the game's current state, that I wish Steam had a thumbs-sideways option and not just a thumbs-up and thumbs-down. There's a lot of missed potential! First, take note that this is an adaptation of a smartphone game. The smartphone game is free, but offers additional features either via an annual subscription ($5/year) or a one-time payment ($12 for a lifetime). This $12 Steam version of the game is equivalent to said smartphone game with all the extra stuff unlocked forever, except you play on PC or Steam Deck instead of a smartphone. If you like to try things before you buy them, search for Knotwords on your Apple or Google device. [EDIT 2023-05-06: The mobile versions also get updated more frequently than the Steam version; as of this writing, the Steam version is 7 updates behind the mobile version. On top of all the other issues this review mentions, there's another reason not to buy this game, or at least not this version of it. Get the mobile version instead and get the version that the devs put their actual love into. The only thing that the Steam version has that the mobile version doesn't is that you can use a keyboard and mouse instead of a tiny touch screen.] There is definitely a solid idea at the core, but I have some issues: * None of the puzzles have any real symmetry or beauty. If Sudoku has taught us anything, it's that aesthetic appeal can greatly elevate a puzzle. (There's a reason why it was Sudoku that took off and not Number Place, the name it was invented under in an American magazine. Number Place puzzles were generally ugly.) * There are certain ways in which the vocabulary of this game is deficient. Seeing the same words over and over gets old, especially the 15-letter words in the Classic Sunday puzzles. (I can't count all of the STRAIGHTFORWARD's I've seen!) You'll also never see a 12-, 13-, or 14-letter word. * Paradoxically, there are times in which the vocabulary of this game is overabundant! As a former dabbler in Scrabble, I am rather familiar with all 107 valid 2-letter words, including many that you'll never see in Knotwords (AA, BI, OE, QI, ZA). I'm not complaining about these words not appearing in Knotwords, as Knotwords aims to be a casual-friendly game, and it's more fun to stretch your mind and recall words that you know than to have to just guess random letter combinations until something like OE is magically declared to be a word somehow. If your puzzle is aimed at the Scrabble-playing community, then more obscure words are more likely to go over well with that crowd, but this is not such a game. So why aren't these standards applied to the entire game's vocabulary? Why does this game expect me to know that CHARIER, MERES, and VIREO are words? I'm a freelance puzzlesmith myself, and even I think these words are BS. Removing these words from the puzzle generation would admittedly pose a risk to the "seeing the same words over and over" problem, but I think that BS Scrabble-ese words are worse. (Side note: nix the "Uncommon Words"-themed puzzles in the puzzlebooks. I only dabbled in Scrabble enough to master the 2-letter BS words, not the 3- and 4-letter ones!) [EDIT 2022-11-29: The game also includes the word SHAT, the past tense of ♥♥♥♥, a verb meaning "to defecate". These words are generally considered vulgar. Maybe this isn't an all-ages game so much.] * There's not much variety of puzzle styles. Most puzzles are of the "Classic" style, including the Daily Minis (which are 5x5 Classics). The most common alternative style is "Twist", in which each row and column has a number indicating how many vowels (AEIOU) should be in it. You'd think that this would add some logic to the game, but it really doesn't; the vowel counts rarely give you an opportunity to logically deduce that a letter must be a consonant or must be a vowel, and on the rare occasions that they do, you have no way of marking a cell to indicate such. You learn to mostly ignore the numbers unless one of them turns red to indicate that a row or column has too many vowels. Honestly, the main challenge that Twist puzzles introduce is that the regions are bigger, making it more difficult to unscramble the letters within! The monthly puzzlebooks introduce themed puzzles in which the indicated words all fit a theme, but the number of possible themes is limited, and you'll see the same ones twice every month, and thus see the same words over and over within those themes. (The "Flowers" theme even includes the misspelled FUSCHIA [sic]!) The "Start With Vowels" theme which appears in the monthly puzzlebooks gives you all the vowels and simply tasks you with unscrambling the consonants, which is surprisingly a decent change of pace. But there isn't really much else. * Incommunicado devs make these issues and others difficult to address. I'm pretty sure the "An Adventurer Like You" achievement got broken somehow, because I've met its requirements, and yet I don't have it. Some people have it, so maybe it wasn't broken at an earlier point (but other achievements were broken at those points, and I'm glad that they've been fixed). Without these issues, this could easily be an excellent game. As it stands, I see it as a good game with painful blemishes. [EDITED 2023-04-01: I have most of the achievements and am on track to get them all by my next birthday. I will never play this game again after that point. I have also edited my review to a thumbs down. I've left the above review intact for posterity, since it does touch on most of the issues that I have, but the incommunicado devs really need to start fixing big issues. For instance, it has been determined that the "An Adventurer Like You" and "Titular" achievements only trigger if you spell both words required IN THE SAME SESSION. Since you can't replay a solved puzzle unless you cheat by finding your game data on your computer and moving or deleting it, this is remarkably unfair. I'm also not convinced that all four required words for these two achievements appear in the daily puzzle archives. Also, why is SCRUPULOUS one of the words in the "Negative Qualities" category? That's. . . wrong. On the topic of questionable words, some players find it questionable that multi-word phrases appear in certain categories as if they were single words, such as AMERICANBULLDOG in Animals. I'm not one of them, but it's worth mentioning.]
This game is great, even though I'm not particularly great at it.
Gameplay was fun the first day. Launched it to play again today and it is stuck in fullscreen mode, horribly pixelated regardless of resolution. The toggle between fullscreen and window mode doesn't work. As a result, the game is unplayable.
KnotWords. Tried it on my phone and ended up liking it more than I expected. It has enough of a twist on typical unscrambling/crossword type games to be enjoyed on its own merit. If you've got a thing for words and a little bit of logic, you'll enjoy this. Puzzlebooks are the main feature of this game. They come out on a monthly basis and split between Classic and Twist mode. Each mode's book will ramp up in difficulty as you move along. Since Classic mode is pretty straightforward, I felt able to get through my first book with accompanying challenges along the way. Some puzzles have themes which can seem unfair if you are unfamiliar with words within that theme (looking at you flowers!). Twist puzzles, however, weren't as straightforward -- even though I knew it wouldn't be on name alone -- the tutorial for it is so brief that if you aren't paying attention, you may get lost initially like I did. It'd be great if the tutorial on the main menu contained a twist puzzle as well in case you want to revisit it. Customization options let you decide if you want a classic crossword experience with no feedback, or a more helpful version of the game that tells you if valid words have been entered. I'm glad the game lets you choose in this regard. Game is still engaging on either setting, in my view. And there are hints too if you really need them, though I rarely felt compelled to. I did encounter some audio glitching with the music on the Steam version (as opposed to the iOS/Android version). This has been mostly resolved with only minor hiccups now and then. Speaking of the music, it's some nice Muzak-esque ambiance with a couple of bops. I think they change from day to day, so you'll hear something different if you log in each day to complete daily puzzles. One gripe I'll mention is that I thought the archive feature would have puzzle books and daily puzzles of month's passed and, at least for me, that wasn't the case. At the time of review I only see May's puzzles but if I am able to go back to past months going forward, then this gripe will be resolved. With all that in mind, I definitely recommend this game. The feeling of accomplishment comes when you figure out a twisty string of letters or a seemingly insurmountable blank space of empty boxes. Plus, your progress is saved if you decide to leave and come back with a fresh set of eyes. Easy to get into, and easy on the eyes with its minimal UI. The full version is worth the price, in my view.
if you love word games you have to play this!!! even if you just like puzzle games in general but not necessarily word games, i'd still highly recommend it!!!!
Literally unplayable. Game keeps sitting at a blue fullscreen, going windowed or changing window size doesn't help. When I open the tutorial I can get 2 words in before that bugs out. I can open the dailies but then I can't click anything either. This isn't an early access title or anything, and even then not being able to play the game AT ALL would be unacceptable. For a relatively high price for this kind of game, you can't even access previous months puzzles appearantly. I don't even know if it's allowed on Steam to just remove gameplay content like that. So glad I tried this out within 2 weeks of buying, definitely not worth a penny.
Game was good at launch but seems almost abandoned now, with still glitched out achievements players have had to bend over backwards to achieve without any other assistance than talking amongst themselves on the discussion boards. Game has remained at full price and has never (as far as I'm aware) gone on sale or has a discounted price. Mobile version is getting updates and maybe a better option, as this version has (according to posters here) silently been ignored.
