just like the name indicates, good bones has some good bones under the 'first game jank' is presents sometimes. the story is solid, heartwarming when it has to be, but i felt a bit disappointed about being so horribly punished for allowing the protagonist to say the wrong every now and then because that happens, we say the wrong things sometimes. the ideal dialogue options were a bit too good every now and then and felt not as appropriate in the moment. and some assets seem underused (we could have spent more time in the library, per example). some of the backgrounds were a bit pixelated/not detailed enough, which is a problem in a game that DOES involve pixel hunting for items. with all of that said, most of the dialogue does indeed feel natural, the lofi ambiance is on point, the physicality if some puzzles and the discussions that good bones inspires about grief, letting go and the very concept of what if are so worth it. conceptually, good bones showcases that retcon games has the necessary tools to make good games and that we should keep an eye on them.
Touching story, inclusive. Art style and music are solid. Really enjoying this overall!
I like that it was a simple game, you do not have to be a gamer to play it; anyone can play it. I wish the game had more hints or a button that provides additional hints when you are stuck. Overall, a great game.
Pros: -A new haunted house to explore! -Emotional character writing. -The environments are extra creepy thanks to the judicious use of purple light. Cons: -It's short. Would only recommend on sale. -I have to click through all the drawers and boxes to find a random item. Then I have do do the same thing again to find another item the game failed to mention the first time. This repeats several times.
A cozy point and click game with chill lofi music and spooky vibes! Great for core gamers and non-gamers alike with a accessible hint feature! Love the queer and elements of the story and love that you have to play twice to get different endings! (But you can also save and go from different points in the story if you don't want to start over completely!) The achievements made me actually cackle more than once - check out this awesome indie dev in her first adventure solo, you won't regret it! <3
This is a mixed review for sure. I did enjoy my playthrough but there is alot left to be desired that would have improved the game overall. Pros: I really enjoyed the art design of both the background environments and of the characters. A lot of creativity and thought was put into these elements and it looks awesome! I do think while the story isn't perfect in terms of a mystery or closure at the end, that it was still engaging and had twists and turns I did not expect! I do wish we got more from the ending but it was a fun ride. I also loved that almost everything in the environment was clickable and led to unique character dialogues. That is always a plus for me in point'n'click games. I also dig the diversity and representation in this game! Let's go queer moms <3! Cons: My biggest complaint is the way in which you engage with the environment for finding items. Some objects you are searching for are visible and relatively decent to find when you seach through the game. Other items are not visible at all and you have to check every single box, shelf and drawer to determine if an item you are looking for is there. This is often unclear and sometimes the hints were too vague. And some items don't exist in certain boxes/places UNTIL the game wants you to find it which makes all of this even more confusing. And to make this WORSE, is that if you find an item that you may need to use later, you do NOT Get to have it in your inventory. You have to remember where you found it (this includes the nonvisible items, forcing you to have a thorough mental inventory of what is inside which drawer and where) and go back each time to retrieve it. This strikes me as odd, because in the game you do have an active inventory, so why isn't it possible to just collect everything to begin with? I'm not sure why the dev's encourage you to explore and click everything and then make you go back SEVERAL times to redo this? I think this is just a design flaw to aid in lengthening story progression? But I think it could have been done better. Other than the point'n'click struggles, the rest of the issues are just minor plot imbalances, especially the ending. I also found that sometimes the responses we choose to say to our daughter do not clearly indicate if they were supportive/liked or not. This is frustrating because in order to get either the good or bad end, the choices do matter! Overall this game was fun and has great potential. I just think it needs more polish and more depth to the story. Would be rad if there was a sequel that could improve this concept, because I do like it overall! Take what I said with a grain of salt and give the game a try.
This is definitely a cozy game with delightful characters. After the first play, I am really excited to keep playing!

I could hardly play this game. You click around at every random thing and the game offers no direction. The writing is very cheesy and the amount of dialogue is too much. The hints don't make any sense. I'm not really sure what they were going for here. The style and the story don't seem to fit together. Also, when I clicked the options on the main menu there is no way to back out. Seems poorly made.
I have been looking forward to this game for so long and was so excited to play! I felt like this game explored complex themes well, while also balancing it with moments of levity as you explore this new house with Avi and Bianca. This point-and-click mystery game is perfect for a cozy afternoon. Highly highly recommend it! Can't wait for more amazing diverse stories from Retcon games!
