Game Tengoku CruisinMix Special is a faithful port of the Arcade & Sega Saturn original, blending classic SHMUP gameplay with a "Cute 'em Up" touch. Developed by City Connection, this special edition brings together nostalgia and updated features for an engaging shoot 'em up experience. Pros: • Vibrant pixel art, catchy chiptune music • A roster of playable characters drawn from Jaleco's gaming history, each offers a unique playstyle • Online leaderboards, multiple difficulty levels, various display options Cons: • For players accustomed to modern gaming conveniences, the old-school difficulty might be challenging
This is a really cute and fun game. For a better experience consider turning off the music in the options menu and listening to webcore music.
Very nice arcade shooter game that runs great on Steamdeck. Nice colourful 90s graphics & art. The game let's you play for a long time, since if you die, you can just continue from the point where you died.
Hello again Welcome back to the GAME TENGOKU
Shmup your way through the arcade, each level is like a different arcade game genre. Cute!
[ ] 💾 Erinnerungen an DOS-Games – Nostalgie pur? Musik/Sound: [ ] 🎵 Ohrwurm-Alarm – läuft jetzt in Dauerschleife. [ ] 😭 Raubzug – mein Konto weint bitterlich! [ ] 😡 Ich will meine Lebenszeit zurück – jetzt sofort!
Game Tengoku CruisinMix Special, developed by CITY CONNECTION and KADOKAWA CORPORATION and published by KOMODO, is a vibrant revival of a cult classic arcade shoot ’em up that proudly embraces excess, parody, and pure arcade energy. Rooted in Jaleco’s original Game Tengoku series, this modernized release doesn’t attempt to sanitize or reinvent its identity; instead, it amplifies everything that made the original memorable, from its irreverent humor and colorful cast to its unapologetically old-school design philosophy. The result is a shooter that feels both like a time capsule from the golden age of arcades and a polished celebration of that era for contemporary audiences. At its core, the game is a vertically scrolling shooter that emphasizes constant movement, precise dodging, and aggressive offense. Players choose from a roster of eccentric characters and ships, each pulled from Jaleco’s history and reimagined with exaggerated personalities and distinct weapon styles. These differences are not cosmetic; shot spreads, bomb behaviors, and movement speed meaningfully change how each character handles, encouraging experimentation and replayability. Whether you prefer focused firepower for precision play or wide, screen-clearing shots for crowd control, the roster supports a variety of approaches that keep repeated runs feeling fresh. Stage design leans heavily into spectacle and satire. Levels are densely packed with enemies, environmental hazards, and visual jokes that parody classic arcade tropes, RPG clichés, and even the industry itself. Boss encounters are a particular highlight, often filling the screen with elaborate attack patterns and absurd designs that feel intentionally over-the-top. Bullet patterns escalate steadily, demanding sharper reflexes and deeper familiarity with enemy behavior, but the game generally maintains a fair balance that rewards learning rather than punishing experimentation. It’s challenging in a way that feels true to arcade roots, where mastery comes from repetition and pattern recognition rather than hidden mechanics. The pacing is relentless, reinforcing the game’s arcade lineage. Power-ups appear frequently enough to keep players feeling empowered, but mistakes are costly, especially at higher difficulties. Scoring systems and combo potential add an extra layer for players who want to chase leaderboard dominance, turning each run into a test of consistency and risk management. While the main arcade loop is relatively short, its design encourages multiple playthroughs with different characters, difficulties, and self-imposed challenges, echoing the quarter-munching philosophy of its inspirations. Beyond the core arcade mode, CruisinMix Special includes several supplemental modes that expand its appeal. Time-based challenges and practice options allow players to refine specific skills or chase optimized runs, while bonus content such as archival materials and classic artwork offers a nostalgic deep dive into Jaleco’s legacy. These additions don’t fundamentally change the gameplay, but they enrich the overall package and reinforce the sense that this is a curated celebration rather than a barebones port. Visually, the game is loud, colorful, and unapologetically anime-influenced. Explosions, character portraits, and enemy designs burst with personality, often bordering on absurdity in a way that feels deliberate and charming. The soundtrack complements this tone with energetic tracks that blend retro sensibilities with modern production, keeping adrenaline high throughout each stage. Voice lines and character banter further emphasize the game’s playful, self-aware attitude, ensuring that even repeated runs retain a sense of personality rather than becoming mechanically sterile. While the game’s adherence to classic shooter conventions may limit its appeal for players seeking modern genre innovations, that same commitment is its greatest strength for fans of traditional arcade shooters. CruisinMix Special doesn’t aim to redefine the shoot ’em up; it aims to celebrate it. Its humor, presentation, and tight mechanical execution make it clear that this is a game made with affection for its roots, designed to be enjoyed for its immediacy and flair rather than long-term progression systems. In the end, Game Tengoku CruisinMix Special stands as a joyful, chaotic tribute to arcade culture. It delivers fast, demanding gameplay wrapped in parody and color, offering a satisfying experience for genre veterans and an approachable entry point for newcomers curious about classic vertical shooters. While its scope is intentionally focused, the sheer personality and polish on display ensure that it leaves a strong impression, capturing the spirit of arcade excess in a way that feels both nostalgic and confidently its own. Rating: 7/10
Fun SHMUP, that's on the more on the easier side, once you get the hang of it. I like the varied characters and the quirky story.
