The mechanics sort of don't work and there's no semblance of balance, which is not too much of a problem considering the game did just get released into early access like this week, what I am more concerned about is the creator's absolutely unhidden disdain for organised religion as such, and seemingly something of a misunderstanding of what religion is at all. Just them holding this sort of view would not be enough to merit a negative review, but it sort of ruins the entire point of the game. Instead of an alternate history simulator with a focus on alternative religions rather than military politics, we have received an ill-thought-out anticlerical rant.
Hallelujah, this game is funny as hell! This is Plague Inc., where religion is the virus looking to take over the entire planet with ideas and beliefs. I laughed, I cried, and I learned all sorts of fun facts about historic religious battles and conflicts that have raged across the planet since religion was invented. If you just want to create and sim out your own religion to try to reach number #1 on the planet, I advise you to use max speed arrow. all history breaking news will be skipped and allow you to jam through history unimpeded by history. I'm going back through the game a few times to see if I can reach number 1, its pretty tough i gotta admit.
So the game is like Plague Inc, except with the virus of religion instead of... well a virus. you collect souls that flash in your territory, and that gives you points to upgrade your religion. Some other events pop up and I think if you click them you get upgrade points too but I am not sure. THey flash fast and disappear so you have to pay attention, they are on screen for seconds. And watch out, the pop up satirical news alerts block your screen and when you click the X on them you are always going to miss out on your soul collect to get points. It never fails. I have a bit of an issue with every religion option being locked behind "play the game to unlock the next faith" Additionally I don't know if there is a way to actually win the game and stop the "science counter" from counting down to making religion moot. Early access, and it seems that since the game was put up on Steam there has never been an update or even Developer comment. I don't have any hope or... FAITH that the game will be updated or made more complete. Its an okay time waste, and for .99 cents Ill deal with it. But 10 bucks? Hell no.
