One of my favourit Developers is FRONTLINE GAMES SERIES. This Dev brings back good old Memories with his PANZER GENERAL and BATTLE ISLE like Series. He made 4 great Games about World War 2 in different Places of this War and also with different Factions. I already played and reviewed 2 of the 4 Frontline Games, so don`t wonder, i used Parts of my other Reviews. Welcome to FRONTLINE: THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR This Time in the FRONTLINE Games we play with the Soviet Side. Walk the long Way from Moscow to Berlin and fight your Way through. Like in the other FRONTLINE Games a fine tactical Challenge is waiting for you. Old School Round by Round Maps in Hexagon are waiting for you, sorted in Campaigns in a Real Events Timeline from 1941 to 1945. The Graphics are again nice done and every unit very detailed shown, so that you have never Problems to differ them, no matter how many you are commanding. Not every Unit is available from the Beginning. Like in the Real War some came later. But for all one thing is important. Lead them wisely through the Maps and raise them to get more and better Abilities. Know your Units and let them work together to get the maximum Effect on your Way. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2366921097 Once again you will also fight Historical Battles and it is up to you, how you do this. You have the Tools, the Way is yours. Plan your Strategy and use your Units carefully. With Experience they will raise and are bale to get new abilties that will make your Way much easier. Keep in Mind that your Enemy will not sleep. Take care of your Units. The Gameplay feels again like a wonderfull Mix of PANZER GENERAL and BATTLE ISLE, two Games of the Past i really, really like. You move your units Round by Round and have always an eye on the sphere of influence of your Units and of course the Enemy Units. Don`t stumble with a weaker Unit into Artillery Fire. Please not. Also have an eye on your Mission Targets. The Music is again very atmospheric and as someone who really likes Game Soundtracks, i like this one. Well done again. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2366921536 A big thanks to the Dev, who did as a one Man Team again an amazing Job. I´m looking forward for your next Games. Thanks. And thank YOU for Reading.
If you like this Review and want to read more like this then Follow our AWG Curator!
Information / Review English
Frontline: The Great Patriotic War falls into the Simulation / Strategy Genre, which was developed by Frontline: Games Series. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2338960593
Gameplay / Story
In this part of the series you take control of the Soviet Army, this was the official name for most of the armed forces of the Soviet Union from 1946 to 1991. Until 1946 it was called the Red Army. According to their own understanding, the Soviet Army was the most important armed power organ in the Soviet Union. During the Cold War it was part of and the main force of the Warsaw Pact and thus of the Eastern Bloc. It comprised the four armed forces Strategic Missile Forces, Air Defense Forces, Land Forces and Air Forces of the USSR. During the Hungarian uprising in 1956 and the Prague Spring 1968, the Soviet Army took over the function of securing the rule of the Communist Party in allied Eastern Bloc states. During the Afghan war from 1979 to 1989 she was confronted with the task of supporting the local satellite state against an Islamist guerrilla movement supported by the West. In 950 the Soviet Army was the numerically strongest army in the world. It counted 170 infantry, 35 tank and 58 artillery divisions with a peacetime strength of nearly four and a half million soldiers. The reserve potential of the Soviet Army, including the ideological-paramilitary formations of the working people, is said to have been nearly 30 million men. By 1955 the active Soviet armed forces had increased to about 5.7 million men. The official dissolution of the Soviet cavalry took place at the end of 1953. When starting the game, it is immediately noticeable that the user interface is kept simple and you immediately know where to click with the mouse, this makes the whole thing institutional. The gameplay is easy to understand, understandable and the game mechanics are easy to understand because they have been implemented very well. The audio and background noise are well coordinated. I think that in this genre the sound of the vehicles or weapons simply has to be right, because that's the best way to develop a feeling in the situation. Units can only be bought from a pre-made selection in each battle, so you cannot make them yourself. But this is not really tragic, because you still have to proceed more strategically, because you only have a certain number available, this also gives that certain something. Advantages such as digging in, ambushing or using guns should be carefully considered in advance, because each is valuable. Each unit has its advantages and disadvantages, so you should consider which one to buy, because resources can also become scarce. There are a total of 14 campaigns to master and each of them is unique and requires its own strategy. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2338960651
Pro
+ History + extensive campaign + nice effects and background noise + good AI + World map + Many unit types (such as tanks, guns, infantry)
Contra
- well-known mission objectives
Conclusion
Frontline: The Great Patriotic War offers you an Experience to see the War from a new Perspective and gives you the feeling of Goosebumps what happened back then. PS: First of all, many thanks to the developer who provided us with this key for the group.
Information / Review Deutsch
Frontline: The Great Patriotic War fällt in das Genre Simulation/Strategie, welches von Frontline: Games Series entwickelt wurde. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2338960593
Gameplay / Geschichte
Pro
+ Geschichte + umfangreiche Kampagne + schöne Effekte und Geräuschkulisse + gute KI + Weltkarte + Viele Einheitentypen (wie Panzer, Geschütze, Infanterie)
Kontra
- altbekannte Missionsziele
Fazit
This is another great Frontline series game. You play the role of the Soviets fighting the Germans on the Eastern Front during World War II. I played the first scenario in Frontline: The Great Patriotic War Campaign and I really like the map, military units for both sides, the graphics and the zoom in features. The military units are really well done and the game also has a great tutorial for new players. Plus the game also has a sandbox feature and you can play the game in several different languages. I also like the campaign menu that goes by not only by the actual battles fought on the Eastern Front during World War II, but also by the year (1941 - 1945) each battle is fought so that you play them in order. It is a nice little touch to a great game. Well done! You get a lot of content for the price of the game. I highly recommend this game to check out if you are interested in battles fought on the Eastern Front during World War II. It is sort of a coincidence that this game is coming out where you play the Soviets at the same time that Order of Battle: World War II (another great World War II series) is coming out with new DLC's where you play the Soviets on the Eastern Front. It is sort of nice to play the Soviets instead of the Germans for a nice change of pace in these great World War II games. This game developer is great bunch of guys. They personally notified me when the game would come out which I really appreciate. Thank you guys for putting out another great Frontline series game. Cheers! Steve
After playing the first part of this game the "Western Front" i assumed that "The Great Patriotic War" will give me the same gaming experience because it is almost the same game only with different unit models. But i was wrong. This game provides far more worse gaming experience than its predecessor. It is unfinished with lots and lots of bugs, such as units spawning outside of playable area or being unable to finish the turn bacuse the button suddenly stops working and you have to save/load in order to continue playing. Some of the bugs from the "Western Front" have also been carefully brought in The Great Patriotic War". There is no mission descriptions, no in game tutorial, no description of game mechanics. There are some numbers that describe unit strength against other units but they do not mean anything. The RNG is so crazy that you cant predict even remotely close the result of battle between two units. Even fully surrounded units will avoid damage with consistency and rout your full squads surrounding them. The dumbness of AI which was not very noticeable in the first part now is in its full grace. It can only stay and shoot with its artillery or slightly move forward if you get close enough to it. That makes this game even with this wild RNG very easy. The choice of music for battles is pretty strange, it would more suit the main menu theme. Hearing "Katyusha" or Soviet anthem for 10 times in one mission makes you want to turn the sound off. These compositions are not bad, its just that constantly hearing them doesnt add anything to the game.
This is a great strategy game that I have not seen in awhile. It is refreshing that they still make these kinds of games. Its good as it gets for this type of game, which is fine for me. I played it on easy just to get a good feel for the game and I'm curious to see how it is on more challenging levels. There are several levels that are not always the same map and there are several missions per map before you finish if you wish to do them giving you more opportunity to do something each play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htOjGDf_gbc
+ Enjoyable, low price, wargame light (compared to Order of battle or Panzer General). Nice graphics, all the way to the Reichstag building. Must adopt correct tactics and direction of assault to win. Artillery is great defending and attacking. Kill those 88mm with sneaky snipers. Clear roads so your HQ can go from one flank to the other - it is vital. Replay is enhanced by difficult secondary objective. Developer shows interest in improving game. - Can't move troops through each other, so think ahead or you will get stuck among bad terrain...
Enjoyable turn-based WWII strategy game. Intuitive, quick and cheap. Definitely worth its price.
Хорошая игра!
Great series, and a great new release. About time to have the soviet side.
Has that Panzer General feel to it, but with enough variation to make it worthwhile. A few slight bugs (clouds hiding a target point - assuming this was not intended) but no game breakers. I went straight out and brought the Western Front edition. Terrific value for money!!
