Reviews
I usually dont write reviews, but I would like to give some praise here because i think this game deserves more love and attention then it has right now. Its clear that this game was made with a lot of passion and i think vissually the environment looks stunning. There is a free demo that is definetely worth checking out. If you like it, you should buy the game in full because you unlock more options, enemies, and stages get harder. Worth looking into if you like city builders and/or tower defense games.
Awesome game at only 150mb size. crazy fun.
Very good promise in this game there is! Seriously I've been wanting a game like this for a while. It still needs work, but I think this could really be something.
kinda boring, the game play loop is the same with just mission demands and more enemies each round. not alot of depth or personal creativity you can put in.
Criminally Underrated. Very polished and great if you like Tower Defense games.
I only just started playing this game but it is immediately a ton of fun. Really, more people should know about it and play this game. Awesome base builder + tower defense.
There are some things that this game does well, it forces you to be precise with resource expenditure, the combat is shockingly satisfying when it's going well. Some of the downsides would include having to manually select each house for deconstruction when placing farms, the fact that "volley size" appears to only affect the maximum amount of enemies targetable at a time, the fact you can't set targeting priorities (which makes the cast iron cannon tower with the first upgrade ball choose to fire at new targets entering max range to shred their armor instead of killing the units walking past it), summer boon options should either provide more than 3 options or lower the odds of similar options popping up (being forced to choose between a temporary boon or two losses of favor options kind of sucks), some of the elite wizards are actively a detriment early in runs (primarily icy pulse), military buildings have labor upkeep even in the off seasons (this one I'm iffy about at best), not knowing the size of groups/types in enemy spawns (it'll sometimes have two indicated locations where one of them spawns about 15 units and the other summons the multihundred sized horde), trading on the market is more of an every turn occurrence instead of an emergency measure. Overall I like the game and hope more people give it a shot.
'Had to write a review as this is clearly going under the radar and shouldn't be. Fortifend is insanely fun and a unique entry in the tower defense genre. In procedurally generated locations, you use mountains, rivers, walls, and bridges to control the map, funneling enemies where you want to go as they try to reach your fort. The further in you go, the more options for your defenses unlock, as well as more varying types of enemies, requiring you to change and adapt. Once your resources are producing at rates that could sustain 3 nations, you can sell the excess for any other resources/labor you need to build an unstoppable fortification. I am hoping for some tweaks, fixes, and more content but I suppose that'll depend on how well this game does. I'm still not nearly done with it and once I do complete it, I'll be looking forward to the endless mode update coming next. Give it a shot and support the devs, they've created an amazing gem here. I haven't played a tower defense in years but this made me happy I gave it a shot. Thank you, Side Crumb!
Game feels like a classic. Needs some work tho.
Fortifend is a little tower-defense game with resource management that drew me in with its gorgeous art style while I was browsing my Steam discovery queue full of p*rn games and whatnot Steam starts recommending you after you've seen 20000 of them. Let's start with the hook, that got me into it: The art style is awesome. Enemies are adorable, terrain generation is very cool and it would be a waste not to use it again in a different game. Overall it's just a nice-looking game, you can clearly see a lot of care was put into it. Other than that it's free-form* tower defense/city builder, meaning you path enemies however you want. (or, rather, however your keep placement and budget allows) The management part of the game is resource-light, but labor-heavy. Every turn you get labor (This game's version of actions points, I guess) based on how many unemployed citizens you have, and that's your real "currency". Not wood or iron or whatever else. It might feel easy at first. It's very much not. There's quite a learning curve to optimal labor spending, took me quite a while to get it. The gameplay loop itself is fun and engaging, and the game is genuinely competently made. But the last third of the campaign does start to drag, I think. Levels get longer, my engagement didn't exactly follow, and without any meta-progression to speak of it started feeling like I was just pushing through missions to see the ending rather than creatively exploring possibilities mission presented me with - both due to fatigue and because I'd worked out a strategy that let me turn my brain off. (I do like the 3 bosses the game has though, although I'm not sure fighting each one 2 times in succession was exactly the right call pacing-wise) That said I'm not exactly a fair judge of a tower defense game - it's not my genre, so your experience will probably differ. Besides, there are a few bugs here and there, some questionable balancing decisions with minor impact, and that's it. It's a solid tower defense with a cool art style and an interesting gameplay loop that sticks to what it is. And that's what counts, right?
