Buy this game, but on a tablet. I really love Kariosoft games, hence re-bought it here to give ti a go to see if I'd prefer the larger screen etc... Their games are delightful this game is fun, but the porting makes this awkward.
If you are not familiar with Kairosoft games, they are mobile games that generally don't have the usual "free to play" grind/energy systems (there were some free to play mobile games but Steam has the "DX" ones without the micro-transactions). Their games tend to be casual and cozy, easy to play but also with enough depth to optimize around. They are all fairly similar so a lot of my review will focus on how this one compares to other Kairosoft games. I enjoyed this game and the mechanics. It has the usual Kairosoft "shop builder" mechanic for your clubhouse where you place and upgrade shops that passively earn money, and scale up as you get more customers. There is not much depth in this part of the game which is fine because it's not the main focus. The more important part is designing your course, which in my opinion is the main draw of the game. You have a very large area to map out into individual holes for your course, and you use decorations and the layout to make holes that customers like (more on that later). The pacing is good, each time you reach a major milestone you unlock a higher maximum hole value, so you are designing new holes throughout the game. The third major mechanic is managing the customers, over time you unlock more and they each have their own "quests" you can take care of, along with individual upgrades. Compared to other Kairosoft games I enjoyed the mix of things to do. The game gives you a lot of things to manage and is pretty flexible about letting you focus on whatever you want to focus on. There were not too many constant info pop-ups in your face like some of the games have, things like a character upgrading to a new skill level was just shown on part of the screen rather than in a fullscreen message box. There are only three resources (money, heart points, nature points) and I never felt like I needed to grind for one of them, whereas some of the other Kairosoft games that use an item system are more easy to get stuck with. It's fun seeing all of the golfers playing the course and the competitions give a good reason to focus on one group and how individual characters fare. Overall it felt a little easier to get everything in one run than other Kairosoft games, and the New Game+ feature is good for adding a reason to replay. In terms of negatives, the biggest one is that the customers are way too picky about what they consider a "bad" hole. If you design a hole at all realistically where the hazards are meant to force the golfer to use skill or strategy, every customer will generate a bunch of frowny faces and the auto-description will switch from "Majestic Desert" to "Stinky Unpopular Desert". You have to instead cheese the game so that all of the "difficult" elements are off to the side and make the actual approach to the hole as short and straight as possible. It's still somewhat fun to design around those constraints but the end result are very boring and same-y layouts that don't resemble real golf courses at all. Somewhat related, another negative is that the golfer AI is pretty bad. You upgrade their skill over time but it doesn't make much difference, during the big important contests many times my S-tier customers would be +2 and some random C-tier character would win with -6 through sheer luck. Overall I think this is a good Kairosoft game and one that I would play again. It's a good mix of the elements from the more building-focused games and the team management sportsy games. I wish the course rating system encouraged better designs but I still had fun playing through and unlocking everything.
Developed and published by Kairosoft Co.,Ltd., Forest Golf Planner delivers another charming management simulation from a studio well known for turning everyday businesses into surprisingly addictive strategic experiences. This time, players are tasked with building a golf resort from the ground up, beginning with a peaceful stretch of forest and gradually transforming it into a premier destination for golf enthusiasts. Instead of focusing on realistic sports mechanics, the game emphasizes planning, creativity, and efficient management, creating an experience that is both relaxing and rewarding. Its retro-inspired pixel visuals and approachable systems immediately make it accessible, while the gradual expansion of the resort keeps players invested over many hours. The game's biggest attraction is the freedom it gives players to shape their own golf course. Designing fairways, greens, hazards, and scenic landscapes becomes a satisfying puzzle where aesthetics and functionality go hand in hand. Every new hole contributes to the overall reputation of the resort, encouraging thoughtful placement rather than random expansion. As the course grows, players unlock additional opportunities to improve the property, allowing them to refine layouts, attract new visitors, and compete for higher rankings. The annual evaluations create meaningful long-term goals, rewarding careful planning instead of rapid, careless growth. Forest Golf Planner goes well beyond course construction by placing equal importance on the business side of running a successful resort. Visitors expect quality amenities in addition to excellent golf, making it essential to invest in restaurants, clubhouses, shops, and recreational facilities that enhance the overall guest experience. Balancing finances while expanding these services creates a satisfying management loop where every investment has the potential to increase customer happiness and generate additional income. As the resort becomes more prestigious, tournaments and special events become available, providing fresh objectives while reinforcing the feeling that the player's decisions directly influence the success of the business. Another enjoyable feature is the variety of guests who visit the course. Different golfers arrive with unique preferences and skill levels, encouraging players to create layouts that appeal to a wide audience while also offering enough challenge for experienced players. Some visitors eventually become loyal members, unlocking additional requests and progression opportunities that give the simulation extra personality. This steady stream of new goals prevents the gameplay from becoming repetitive, and the consistent introduction of new buildings, upgrades, and customization options ensures there is always another milestone to pursue. The presentation remains one of Kairosoft's strongest qualities. The detailed pixel art is full of charm, bringing the forest setting to life with colorful environments and lively character animations. Watching golfers enjoy the courses you've designed provides a genuine sense of accomplishment, especially after seeing an empty landscape evolve into a bustling golf resort. The cheerful soundtrack complements the relaxed atmosphere, making the game easy to enjoy in both short play sessions and longer management marathons. While the visuals intentionally prioritize simplicity over realism, they suit the game's lighthearted tone perfectly. Although longtime Kairosoft fans will recognize familiar mechanics from the developer's previous management titles, Forest Golf Planner successfully distinguishes itself through its golf-focused theme and emphasis on course design. Some players looking for deeper strategic systems or realistic golf simulation may find the mechanics relatively straightforward, but the accessible gameplay, satisfying progression, and constant sense of improvement make it easy to recommend. It successfully captures the enjoyment of building a successful recreational business while maintaining the relaxing pace that has become synonymous with Kairosoft's catalog. Rating: 7/10
As the current build in June 2025, the game is pretty janky and restrictive about where you can place holes. I do hope it gets plenty of updates, but time will tell.
