Fire Arrow and Fire Arrow X are time attack style shooters with a heavy emphasis on scoring. Otherwisely, you can call them coffee break shmups.

Jugar mucho y memorizar patrones.

Fantastic caravan that flows incredibly well once you start learning the patterns. The game is set up so that even clearing the caravan modes are goals at the beginning. It can be very hard at first, but once you start finding the game's rhythm, you can see real improvement. Getting that 5min clear took me several hours of work, and now I want to go back just to get a better score. Going from one game to the next does involve a few more button presses than necessary (quit to menu, then restart the run), but is still very snappy and can be done in two seconds. The scoring system is simple, yet perfectly fits the game. Uses a dropping medal system, where the medal value decreases on death or bomb use. You can chain enemy kills to get the medals to drop, and collecting enough medals increases the score. Simple, but it feels good to see your items increase in size the longer you go. The only downside to score chasing is that the patterns are randomly chosen from a pool, so RNG can alter what shows up, affecting drops. However, it's not enough to offset just playing well. Highly recommended for people that want a caravan shooter with a bit more depth.
This release comes with both the original Fire Arrow, and Fire Arrow Plus. Both games have similar mechanics, but Fire Arrow Plus has completely re-designed art, and somewhat different boss design, which changes the gameplay quite a bit. Personally, I prefer the Plus version, but both have their merits. They also both have lots of little customization options for the visuals and the gameplay, allowing you to change how large the sprites are scaled, select which weapon you start with, change the firing more from burst to steady. It has native controller support, and also supports vertical monitor setups that will work with a variety of resolutions. Be warned, though, for a 1080x1920 resolution I was only able to set it to "fullscreen 2x scale", the 3x scale mode didn't work in fullscreen, as I'm guessing it was too large to render properly. Each game has two modes to choose from, one with a 5 minute timer, and one with a 3 minute timer, and it seems there's three other modes to unlock, but I've yet to discover what they are. The game consists of one stage with a few different bosses which cycle out on each run through. You have two weapons that you can swap between, and that you power up simultainiously... a blue weapon which becomes a thick, focused fire weapon when powered up, and a red weapon, which when powered up becomes a spread-fire weapon. You also have a limited number of screen-clearing bombs and a "twin shot" ability, which temporarily spawns in two ghost ships that fire whatever weapon you don't have selected alongside you. The game has a nice variety of abilities to use and it keeps the gameplay feeling satisfying and fun. The game also controls well, with ship movement and firing feeling very nice. It's also quite challenging, which I appreciated. The best part, however, is just how well it nails the audio & visual aesthetic of scrolling shooters from the 90s. It honestly nails the look & feel of classic arcade games better than any pixel art indie game I've ever played, and I feel that alone would be worth the asking price. The fact that it also plays really well seems to make this a no-brainer to me. Highly reccomended, even with only one stage, this is well worth the asking price. Pros: - Faithfully replicates the audio & visual style of retro arcade shooters. - Controls well and offers a subtantial but not insurmountable challenge. - Supports vertical monitor setup. - Kickass soundtrack. - Good replay value. Cons: - Only one stage long. - Certain scaling settings not compatible with certain resolutions.
it always impresses me when a game absolutely NAILS recreating an older era. this feels like something from the mid-90s that i'd be running on mame lol
