A classic JRPG from a different era ported to PC, updated with new graphics and other modern QoL features, but still with notable flaws
Final Fantasy, originally released for the NES in 1987, was a groundbreaking game that meshed western D&D archetypes with Japanese game design and flavor. Compared to modern games it is very dated and shows it's age, but at the time it was quite revolutionary and for many western gamers, their first experience with JRPGs. This truly is a piece of gaming history, and without Final Fantasy 1, there would be no 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 etc. I think it's worth playing for that reason alone if you're a JRPG fan, because it shows you the very beginning and where it all originated from. This remaster does a good job updating the 8 bit NES game to a more modern standard. The graphics and interface are visually appealing, there is now an auto-battle feature so battles are quicker and less tiresome, and they have added in-game maps of all areas so the world is much more accessible than ever before. All these things were done well and deserve recognition. Despite this, there are still some major flaws that feel as though they could have been easily addressed. First, though the UI has been modernized it's still lacking in some respects. For example, to have all your characters flee from battle, you need to make a total of 12 button presses! The game shouldn't require that much pressing for a common action. Compare that to other Final Fantasy games, where fleeing is simply holding the L + R buttons together. Speaking of random encounters: they are extremely frequent. Thankfully there is an option to toggle them on/off. But why does it also require 6 button presses? The menuing in this game is really dissatisfying, to be quite honest. It's fine for keeping encounters toggled on or off for long periods of time. But switching between them in a dungeon is a chore. An option to select random encounter frequency on a scale from 0.25x - 0.5x - 1x would've been peak. Another major UI flaw worth pointing out is spells/items cannot be moved in the inventory. If you want to change the position of a spell, you have to delete it and then pay to re-learn it. All in all, I do recommend playing Final Fantasy I because it is a serviceable port with solid updates and will open your eyes to a wonderful part of gaming history. Yet on a separate level, I feel as if the remaster is lacking and falls short in many respects. A few simple menu updates could easily make this game into a far superior experience. Verdict: 6/10
So this is where the warrior of light started! It's awesome and inspirational to witness this beautifull world! <3 Pixel Remaster version adds all the quality of life features a modern player can ask for this game. Beautifully done and very fun.
After never playing any Final Fantasy game before (other than like, 10 hours on XIV), I decided to go back and play all of them, in chronological order. a FF marathon, if you will. And while the first game is almost 40 years old, and the story is rather shallow for what the genre has defined itself to be in modern times, it was still a game I enjoyed thoroughly, and I have no complaints worth talking about, despite how dated it may initially feel. The story is rather shallow, as I said earlier, and also rather short (took me 20 hours to 100% everything), but it's fullfilling. Every question it makes you ask, it always provides an answer. The combat, while simple and what you'd expect for a 40 year old turn based rpg, was engaging, and the final boss felt satisfying to beat. The overall difficulty is pretty low, and I imagine it only gets harder in later games, there wasnt a time where it didnt feel worth it to play. Overall, I really enjoyed it, and would highly recommend as a newcomer to the FF series
While I enjoyed playing through it, I have to say that this is an inferior version of this game. It would have been better if this was based off the superior GBA and PSP releases that included more content, better balancing, and an MP pool like later games used. Some arrangements are very well done but they just don't seem to outshine the better releases in my opinion. Save your money for those releases instead.
This game is old, like I was born in 1988 and its older then me I think so just keep that in mind. It gives little to no direction, what you need to do can be confusing but I enjoy it. I grew up with it and if you like tabletop gaming or role playing then give it a go.
INCEL GAMING С АВТОБАТЛОМ. ПРИКОЛЬНАЯ ЗАЛИПАЛКА НА ВЫКЛЮЧИТЬ МОЗГ. СИКВЕЛ К STRANGER OF PARADISE ЧТООООООООООО?!!!!!!!!!!! ВЗЯЛ КРАСНОГО МАГА НА СТАРТЕ В ШТАНАХ БЫЛО УЖЕ НАСРАНО #ЯЛЮБЛЮИГРЫ
Un RPG lindísimo
Overall an excellent remaster that adds a lot in terms of quality of life. Broken spells from the original game are fixed and the addition of maps and a chest tracker are particularly helpful. Other inclusions like the bestiary and art gallery are also a very nice addition.
