One of my favorite FF games.
6/10 This is my first time playing FF6, and I was very curious, as lots of people say this is the best of the series. Well, I can definetaly see where they're coming, and the game was probably the best JRPG in 1994, but now it's 2026, and a lot has happened since then. Pros: - The world map. It's an actual open world game (especially the second half of the game), with quite some cities/locations to explore. The map itself is not too big, but it has everything it needs. - Graphics. It's the best you can get from a pixel graphics, and I loved the animations, too. - Music. Awesome, as always with FF games. - QoL improvements. You can quick save anywhere, and there are some buffs you can turn on/off (random encounters, XP/Gil/AP multipliers) - The game and the characters are pretty charming. Meh: - The story. It's okay, has its moments, but nothing extraordinary. - The characters. There are quite some characters, but their background is very simple. Also, there are some pretty strange characters, but it's kinda a signature of the series. - Magic. In this game, EVERYONE can use ALL magic. Some characters have weaker base magic stat, but you can pimp them, and essentially a dumb brawler character can be stronger in magic than an original magic user. Also, this means that by the end of the game, all characters have a looong list of spells, and it's kinda a chore to look for a specific spell among dozens of spells. - Special skills. Every character has its own special skill right from the beginning, which is far more superior than the basic attack, and costs nothing, which makes the base attack pretty much useless. Cons: - The game is VERY vague/obscure about what to do next/where to go next. It happened to me more than once that I had to go through the whole map twice, because I didn't check one specific house/NPC. At the end, I checked a walkthough, because there was several points during the game, where I simply had enough of searching for one specific NPC on the whole map. - OP endgame/final bosses. It's just a classic FF thing, that even if you can get through the game kinda easily, there is a HUGE difficult spike at the final part, and the game want's you to go back and grind for hours and hours. And it takes a huge effort even with cheats, as the maximum XP/AP multiplier is 4x, which in the worst case scneario means that you need to do 25 random encounters to farm 1 high-end spell for 1 character. And if you want to have that specific spell for 4 characters, you need to do 100 random encounters. This is very far from "fun". - There are LOTS of characters. In the first half of the game, you get a new playable character like every hour, which is pretty overwhelming. Also, this is an old school JRPG in the sense that only characters in your current party gets XP, which makes upgrading your whole team (12+ characters) a chore. - Some dungeons are very maze-like, which is especiialy frustrating as you don't just need to figure out how you can get through or what to do, but you also need to fight random encounters pretty often. TL;DR: It's a good FF game/JRPG, but you'll probably need a walkthgough at hand, and you'll need to grind A LOT just before the final part of the game. I'd suggest to set XP/AP multipliers to the maximum from the start, but it'd make the bosses during the game even more weak and easy to beat. There is no solution for a balanced experience throughout the game, IMO.
The sound effects are horrid! Why couldn't they use the SNES sound effects? Are they that lazy?!
pretty chill game
