Fun point and click adventure that reforms the fighting fantasy books into a videogame, with larger world exploration and an easier dice system that rolls for damage instead of rolling for attack strength. Zagor's and Zanbar Bone's deaths are unchanged from the books, but from what i've seen Balthus Dire can no longer be instantly killed by sunlight like he is in the book, which is an improvement. Much of the Citadel of Chaos and the CIty of Thieves remains the same as the books, but the Firetop Mountain has suffered a lot of changes in encounters and locations, which were replaced by random card events, and why is the Minotaur waiting on a 2 beds bedroom? Some background choices are weird like that but the Hydra's room background looks amazing, it really looks like an open battlefield instead of a small room inside a tower, i really enjoyed the depictions of Balthus Dire's and Zanbar Bone's dark towers here, it´s just the firetop mountain that seems like a weak rendition, maybe because the Tin Man games company had already made a tabletop videogame version for it and there might be some sort of conflict of interest. Completing the pokédex is fun too although the fights quickly get easy as XP goes up and that improves the dice rolls, plus extra dice are added for weapons and armour that deal extra damage, luck here doesn´t matter much like it does in the books because it has no use in battle and it doesn´t decrease like stamina does, instead it gets curses that cause the player to be instantly unlucky for rolling a cursed dice. Encounters that would instantly kill the player in the books, which is their famous trademark, to enter a room and die, here have been smoothed out to instead give some sort of curse, for instance an encounter with a vampire in a closed room which in the book would mean certain death, here it gives a curse that makes the player lose stamina when walking under sunshine and that can be removed at a church, Where this videogame is weakest is on world map exploration, yes there are lots of towns taken from the books, but they are all empty other than their use as a healing location, it´s mostly an empty map, that it still makes one waste lots of time walking to and from places. All in all it´s a fun book adaptation, with excellent graphics, music and sounds, obviously missing out on voice acting, and very easy dice based gameplay.
I'm a big fan of all three original gamebooks with City of Thieves even being my number one favourite, so it pains me to jot this down as a negative review. They sadly didn't use any of the wonderful art found in those books so some encounters, for example with Nicodemus, didn't feel as grand as it should've been. The writing itself was also greatly stripped down, however I did find some of the new writing for new quests/NPC's/encounters to be serviceable. Some (a lot) of encounters are missing which was so apparent in the Warlock of Firetop Mountain segment that I wondered if the developers ran out of money. Also making quest items only appear in other stories was a stupid idea. How was I supposed to know the code to Balthus Dire's room is with the frail man in Firetop Mountain?! Also hated the lack of a manual save system and not having the ability to jump back to the world map, either of which could've spared me so much time running through areas over and over and over again. Just play the original gamebooks, they're so much better.
这里是属于运气的世界,没有花俏艳丽的魔法,有的,仅仅是繁衍到巅峰的运气!

I don't have much experience with the Fighting Fantasy books, but I decently enjoyed the free adventure provided in the Fighting Fantasy mobile app and other choose your own adventure type books. This however does a poor job at simulating the feeling of the books and offers little to no repeatability without going through tons of content you've already been through, I don't usually like to review games rpgs without at least putting an hour or two into it but I feel there's not much left here to enjoy.
You know what? It's really decent. I wanted something I could play on laptop with a touchpad, and it fits the bill. idk how much you'd dig it if you don't have vague, nostalgic memories of the original books, but if you do, the trickle of little moments of recognition - things you didn't realise you remember - is very pleasing. Need them to do Way Of The Tiger next... edit; okay, Citadel of Chaos is really bad. I mean, the original book was, which is probably why, but it's possible to get into a never ending death spiral of dice curses with no way to lift them once you run out of money, which is just stupid. Can't summon the motivation to go back and do the whole of City of Thieves again, so I guess I'm done.
Weirdly fun game but the achievements are not it :(

Classic experience for the nostalgic
