Incomplete game, over 5 years after release date and still there's things you cannot obtain, some of the item slots for your hero are unobtainable from start to finish, some resources take far too long to "grind" to be able to level up and build your camp. The game feels like it's been abandoned by the developers.
Looking at all the positive reviews I think I must be missing something here, but the game just feels like a grinding simulator. It wouldn't be too bad if there was more variety between the runs, but most of the time each run is pretty similar. I really like the art style, the concept of bringing the world back, seeing how tiles interact with each other and so on. But in reality the progress seems so slow that there's nothing new to experience in most runs, you watch the guy run in circles, you place down the same tiles, you watch some fights, retreat and then do it again until you make some small level of progress or honestly get bored. If you like this kind of game, I would recommend "He is Coming" which for me is simply a better executed version of this game. However, as I say, lots of other people seem to give it good reviews, so don't completely right it off because of me, maybe try playing the free mobile version to get a feel for the game.
Great atmosphere through the art and music, the story is not great but serviceable. Unfortunately the gameplay aspect feels kind of brain dead, as in you can tune out through most of it and do fine. Two weeks from now I probably forget what I even did here.
I really wanted to like this game, and I feel I've given it a fair shake in terms of casual play. I may not be this game's intended audience and I own that fully, so take this with a grain of salt if you're the sort to want to dive in to deep systems with little explanation. I've had far too many disappointing runs where it felt like I was getting somewhere, getting stronger, only to lose the entire run unpredictably. The sound design, art, and story are all SUPER interesting and I really wanted to stick with this to get through it all. It just leaves a sour taste in my mouth when making progress (i.e., building up the base camp outside of the loop) is directly penalized by being daring and taking risks/chances in a given loop. Is the gameplay really meant to be "go around 6 times, and retreat"? Do this 30 times and you might have enough stabilized metal to build your third building, WOW! I'm exaggerating a *little* here, but ultimately progress in this game just feels very slow. And you're incentivized NOT to push your luck and be the brave and daring HERO (in the title), but rather run away as a default so you don't lose whatever meagre gains you were able to achieve. I did my part to try to learn how things interacted, and I felt like I had the game more or less figured out, but I still struggled to progress. Because of that I just don't find it fun unfortunately, and can't recommend it at this time.
You can loose a run cause monsters steal your gear and you don't notice that. Which would be fine if the game was more common at that and player would need to stay vigilant about it. But it can happen randomly and only there. The game is unique at the genre and the idea is very good, but I didn't feel like there is enough tiles combinations and interactions. Mostly tiles combinations are 0-2 layers deep and honestly the player just stacks them all in one place. With a bit of caution that the hero is gonna be able to handle them.
This game is so unique and interesting, I had some fun playing it, but couldn't get through early game due to the extremely grindy nature of it. Just too many resources needed to progress. I like a good grind, but this one goes a bit too far with it. In addition there's some definite balance issues between classes that needs to be done. Also a little more effort to adapt it to Steam deck/handheld would make it easier to recommend, this is a perfect steam deck game that should have complete support for it. I love most of the Devolver published games, but I can't recommend this one.
