If you are wondering if you should play this game when a sequel that does most things better exists, the answer is YES, the original Hand of Fate has its own strengths. First off, it's just more flavorful. HoF 2 uses a more modern streamlined UI, which I am not a huge fan of, and the "nice" dealer who doesn't talk as much is worse than the talkative a-hole from this game, even if it's the same character. Secondly, it's more brainless, which I do not use as an insult, but rather a different approach that I sometimes miss when playing the sequel. In most challenges, you can load up on random cards you just discovered, add a few favorites, a few picks that sound good based on the parameters of the level, and have fun. In HoF 2 deckbullding is more restrictive, requires more strategizing, and you typically don't get to add as many cards, incentivizing you to stick with what's tried and true instead of what's new and unexplored. Similarly, the combat of the original is less deep, but it's more over the top in its effects and animations, which is fun in its own right. So yeah, do play both of these games, because Hand of Fate is not in any way deprecated by its follow up.
A solid roguelike with deckbuilding elements. I played it after finishing the second game, and you can really feel that this one is less polished—there are balance issues, some bugs that were never fixed, and a general clunkiness to the whole experience. That said, it was the studio’s first project, so it’s easy to overlook those flaws. Overall, it still turns out to be an engaging game with fun mechanics and a charismatic antagonist. P.S. I was surprised to find out that despite the studio shutting down, there’s a new game set in the same universe currently in development — Hordes of Fate: A Hand of Fate Adventure — and it seems like it’s even being made by some of the original developers.
One of the greatest game yet.
I enjoy roguelite games, i enjoy card-driven games and action-RPGs. This game has all of it and i really wanted to enjoy it. The premise is very promising and the game starts off actually interesting and beating minor bosses felt rewarding. After a while i noticed that fights, monsters and items become very repetitive and RNG is absolutely massive in this game and the game plays you more than you play the game. If you manage to collect an effective set of items before you encounter the boss depends only on RNG. There is very little you can do to influence your build during a short run. I worked my way with a lot of cursing, frustration and rage quitting to the final boss and that's where the game finally became unbearable. I just lost all motivation to do runs over and over again until i have a viable build with non-crippling curses and surviving waves of annoying repetitive enemies. There are better games doing what this game tries to achieve. Don't waste your time.
Signed up for a roguelike deck builder, was given an action roguelike with combat instead of cards. Cards are only present as a story telling element, this is not a card game, and its labels are very misleading.
one of the best games from the 360 era
The Good: Dealer Writing The Bad: Everything else. This is very annoying to 100%, and the game's balance is way worse than HoF 2. Combat is also very unpolished. The Ugly: This game can easily 100% your GPU without you knowing. It was the first time I heard weird noises from my GPU fans, and went to check in Libre Hardware Monitor. Yep, 94 C temp, 95% fan speed max Wattage. So this can also get you a big electricity bill if you don't lower the graphics settings.
