The graphics are endearing, the explosions satisfying and the music serviceable. The tank controls and camera system combine to make a, initially, extremely clunky experience but it is definitely learnable and possible to get through the game. That is up until the penultimate stage where the game decides to double down on the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ by swarming you with jetpack enemies that are nigh impossible to hit in time. That said the moment to moment gameplay is fun, just cheat yourself some extra lives for that final bit of the game.
Old game (circa 1999). The graphics aged well, but the controls are wack. There's no story. Its blowing things up, destroying enemies... mindless arcade style shooting. * its a 2 AM game (actually, anytime, for messing around or wasting some time)
an android mobile port of this game with an infinitely superior control scheme came pre-installed on my NVIDIA shield portable, absolutely goated device, perfect for emulating retro games. way before the steam deck and these other off brand imitations became so popular. that's p much how i came to know about this game, that was around 2014-2015 or so lol idk this game is a solid twin stick shooter...or rather...it WOULD be a solid twin stick shooter if it didnt use PS1-era tank controls like its resident evil, silent hill or some junk im being unironic when i say the mobile port of this game should be on steam instead of the original 1999 PC release. there's actually quite a few games from the late 90's that have aged surprisingly well in terms of how they play, the ability to completely rebind controls to fit within the modern standard is of those reasons. unfortunately, while Expendable itself is a solid arcade shooter, the controls cannot be salvaged in anyway. its genuinely that bad. the PS1 and dreamcast ports have the same terrible control scheme as well, not made any simpler or more intuitive in my opinion, the games difficulty feels like it stems more from constantly fighting against the game's horrendous control scheme, rather than from the actual levels, obstacles, and enemies you encounter i still like the game for some reason idk, that's just me oh and by the way if you try to go find the android mobile port of this game (Expendable Rearmed), its been removed from the play store like several years ago or so for whatever random reason. though you can still download the APK from some highly sketchy and questionable website at your own discretion. whether or not the mobile port of the game still functions on current phones/tablets/handhelds is a different matter entirely
As someone who was an avid fan of the demo for this game on the PS1, the PC version was something I needed to get my hands on ASAP. I'm glad I did! The game plays amazingly well, with no drops in frames or quality at all, even when everything is going absolutely nuts (running on an RTX 3060 and a Ryzen 5 3600). The gameplay is what you'd expect from a classic topdown shooter too; pure carnage and chaos with not a single thought being put into what you shoot at! Eye-candy galore too, with the enemies exploding upon death; a true feast for the eyes. Of course, play with the knowledge that this is a 20+ year old game, you shouldn't expect the greatest of mechanics nor brain blasting visuals, but for it's time, this game knew how to deliver, and it delivered it EXTREMELY well. Almost certainly worth the buy, especially if on sale. Must recommend to any classic shooter fan out there.
Świetny powrót do przeszłości, klimatyczna, fajna strzelanina.
Alien Breed.
The game is extremely hard and I refuse to believe that vast majority of players beat it without cheats. Even the walkthrough I found on FAQ jokes that you cheated when you played it. You have 3 lives per credit and maybe 9 or so credits on the easiest settings to beat the entire game and it took me and my friend on CO-OP mode about 100 credits to do it. Even longplay videos on youtube cheat the credits and just hide it with editing. You can make the game significantly easier by changing into the 3rd person back view from the top-down view, but even that is like a cheat because you can only do it by typing a code. Unfortunately, that back view does not work when you're playing in CO-OP. It also makes no sense for this game to have such an aggressive arcade mechanics, which normally require you to put real money to buy more credits, when the game was never even released on Arcades... Anyway, besides the difficulty another problem is how awkward the game controls. You have tank controls and sidestep. For a top-down shooter tank controls are really clunky, since there is mouse support, I do not understand why didn't they just implement full free look and free movement. But on the other hand, the game is fun, with a great combat, awesome weaponry, cool enemies and tons and tons of explosions and destruction. Despite the massive handicaps the game is still fun and somewhat worth the trouble. 7/10
