After so many years finally finished Half Life. Pretty cool game. I remember playing a demo from magazine decades ago.
Still good
Somehow I prefer the original one over the remake Hopped into the multiplayer and it was also still fun
I had never played this game or any games from this era of PC games, decided to give it a try for $10. I planned on giving it a couple hours of playtime, and ended up playing for 10 hours straight. This game can be very challenging but so fun. You are the main character in this first-person shooter and have to navigate your way to safety as you piece together the plot. You fight off monsters, interact with friendly NPCs and solve the puzzles of the maps to progress forward with the campaign. Warning: This game WILL BE extremely challenging and frustrating at times, there is no hand-holding and not all mechanics are perfect, but when you finally overcome one of those challenges, it is so rewarding and satisfying. It brings me back to that feeling I had as a child when a video game could suck you in with its challenge, mystery and wonder. This game is a prime example of how video games WERE different back then. Even with the limited resources the developers had in 1998, they were still able to create something that outperforms most games today.
Undoubtedly a masterpiece when it came out. Visually dated by today's standards. Still a must-play if you want to experience one of the most influential FPS games ever made.
As someone playing Half-Life for the first time in 2026, I came away disappointed. The first quarter of the game genuinely impressed me. The atmosphere, environmental storytelling, and seamless presentation made me understand why this game was so beloved. For a while, I honestly thought I was playing a future 9 or even 10 out of 10 for me. Unfortunately, that’s where my enjoyment peaked. As the chapters became larger and more complex, the game’s age became impossible for me to ignore. Navigation became frustrating, difficulty spikes felt punishing rather than rewarding, and progression often relied on wandering until I happened to find the correct path. There were several moments where I wasn’t challenged...I was simply frustrated. The game also suffers from design choices that haven’t aged well. Full disclosure, by the final chapters I ended up using cheats just to push through to the ending because I had stopped having fun. I completely respect Half-Life’s historical importance. It’s easy to see how influential it was in 1998, and I understand why it’s considered one of the most important shooters ever made. But historical significance and modern playability didn’t line up for me. If you’re interested in gaming history, it’s worth experiencing to see where so many ideas came from. But if you’re simply looking for a fun FPS to play in 2026, I honestly think your time is better spent elsewhere. I wanted to love this game. Instead, I finished it mostly out of respect for its legacy rather than because I was enjoying myself.
The Only Way to Experience Half-Life in 2026 Let’s be clear: this isn’t a standard review of Half-Life. We all know what Half-Life is. We know about the G-Man, we know about Black Mesa, and we know it fundamentally changed the shooter genre forever. You don't need me to tell you whether or not it holds up. Instead, consider this a mandatory public service announcement. If you have Half-Life installed in your library and you are planning a run—or if you’ve been waiting for the "perfect" excuse to replay it—do not launch the base game. Go play Half-Life Legacy. Forget about the dated engine bugs, the awkward HUD scaling on high-resolution monitors, or the clunky controller support. Half-Life Legacy is not just a mod; it is the definitive restoration of the 1998 classic. It takes the original GoldSrc foundation and applies a level of polish that makes it feel like it was released yesterday. Why this is the only version that matters: * Engine Integrity: It fixes the Z-fighting and lighting glitches that have annoyed purists for years. * Modern Amenities: You get proper Steam Achievement support, built-in Workshop integration, and a UI that doesn't feel like it’s fighting your hardware. * The Controller Experience: If you are a fan of tactical shooters and prefer a controller—especially for Steam Deck users—the native implementation here is flawless. * Total Control: You can toggle classic physics and lighting settings to get the exact "feel" you want, while retaining the buttery-smooth stability of a modern engine update. If you respect Half-Life as the masterpiece it is, you owe it to yourself to play it the way it should have looked and felt all along. Stop fiddling with configuration files and compatibility settings. Download Half-Life Legacy. Go play it. Thank me later.
One of the best games of all time. This was my first FPS PC shooter I ever played, and I have loved it ever since. Not sure what I can say that has not been said already. My personal favorite game of all time, incredibly influential on my life, my taste in media, and my own creative pursuits. Nothing has ever blown my mind as much as playing this game for the first time in the early/mid 2000s Amazing movement, satisfying gunplay that still holds up decades later, so many weapons and enemy variety, amazing OST. If you have not played before, I HIGHLY recommend you try it out, if you can get past the dated 1998 graphics. A masterpiece of its time.
_____________8__88_____8 ____________88_8__8_____8 ___________888_____88___88888 __________8888______88_8____88 _________8888_______88______8_8 _________8888_______88______8_8 _________8888_______8_______8 _________8888_____8_______8 __________88888____8______8 ___________8888888______8 __888_________88888_8 8888888________88_____ _8888888_______8_____ __888888_______88_____ ___88_____8_____8_____ ____8______8____8_____8_88 _______8888_8__88_8_88888 _____888888_8_88__8888888 ____8888888__88______88888 ____88888_____8_________888 ____88_________8__________8 _____8_________8_____ _______________8_____ ____________8_8_____ _____________88_8_____ ______________88_____ ______________8_____
Today, it's hard to imagine how much Half-Life stood out from the majority of shooters of its time. Valve showed that a shooter could be not just a series of gunfights, but a full-fledged adventure with a whole world, an interesting plot and constant change of game situations. Many solutions that are now perceived as the norm became popular precisely because of Half-Life. Continuous presentation of the plot, scripted events right during the game, an attempt to make the environment believable and link all levels into a single journey - all this was later used by dozens of other developers. In fact, Half-Life was one of those games that divided the genre into "before" and "after."
