ill probably continue to play this game for a bit but... heres my first impression. this game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at the start... its like watching an Ari aster movie... you sit there for 4 hours... and its just an absolute slog to get through with no payoff. the game is difficult not because the enemies are smart but because youre just overwhelmed at literally every point. most CRPGs dont do this right but jesus ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ christ... as a DM you should be spotlighting one of your avilable characters. making them the hero of an encounter... making some neutral and giving one specific person a hard time... then you switch it up three sessions later where the one who was struggling has been moved to the hero role. this game... a few hours in... is just a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ slog... where normal mode means the enemies do more damage than you do, have better gear, and hit more often.. while if you didnt build exactly like they demanded you do.. youre punished. its all hot ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. im going to see if the writing is any good but... playing this on anything but "easy" mode... where the enemies are artificially weaker ( actually balanced for the encounter) is just a ♥♥♥♥ show. the normal amount of damage an enemy does says 1.0x ... but because the gear is better at normal difficulty they actually have.. twice as much hp, twice as much armor, and twice as much sheild as youre even allowed to touch buy or look at every single encounter. when the game is set up, so that you have to choose EXACTLY the right build or you struggle or just lose and have to start over... its no longer a tactical RPG... its now a very very very hostile puzzle game. buy this game on sale, crank that difficulty to easy and try your best to enjoy whats there. thats just early review of my first 6 encounters of the game... ambushed every single fight, enemies stronger and better gear unless you built your stats with 10str and 10 endurance because every single enemy has been statmaxed with the same amount of points you have.. the developers didnt think about encounter leader, lt, minion mindset. look i know im spoiled by final fantasy tactics.. though it had its one fight that was a complete ♥♥♥♥ show.. but that was mostly a balanced game... this is just nasty ♥♥♥♥♥♥ hot dog water where encounters are built by a complete edgelord who thinks that the amount of time you spend in a game determines how good it is, so he ensures that you spend the maximum amount of time redoing everything till you figure out the build he demands you run.
After I loved so much Rome, this is a nice smelly turd. Bugfest with so many irritating things. There is somewhere a nice game, but sometimes you feel like you play against 100% scripted chance to die. There is a specific pack of wolves when I try to visit in the west a location with some pagans and these wolves have 100% chance to knock down my team and then everyone is a free snack. Whatever I have tried like going to the other side of map, blocking paths etc all wolves seem to have unlimited range and it feels scripted to lose just to say "fu.ck you and your happy time" in your face. If the random encounter was to face it in a later stage, well guess what ? It does not work. When I leave the camp the wolves are there. Just a stupid game. I hope if they release a new game after Rome to be better or at least equal of Rome.
I was looking for more Viking games like NORSE: Oath of Blood and stumbled upon this one. It definitely scratched the itch, and I gotta say, I enjoyed it even more than NORSE: Oath of Blood. The replay value is good. I like games where choices matter and you're rewarded with multiple endings. The Viking setting is by far the #1 reason why I picked this game up, but I was pleasantly surprised by the rest. Combat, character building, and exploration are solid. Pretty simple to understand while still being engaging. The mission timer was something I wasn't much of a fan of, so I disabled the loss condition upon the timer expiring in the game files. However, before the timer even ran out, I already felt like I was in the endgame and ready to wrap up the playthrough, so it's actually a pretty generous timer. The difficulty settings work for all types of players. You can make the game fairly easy or very challenging. I'm a casual player, so I usually play on easier settings, but I cranked this one up to hard, and it made for a really immersive story: As soon as I did, I got ambushed while leaving a camp and finished the fight with only one man standing. Then I ended up camping for multiple days trying to heal the party's injuries, only to run out of medicine before I could heal the last guy, leaving him with a nasty chest laceration. I tried to go to the nearest village to buy more herbs, but I'd caused some "trouble" there earlier, so the villagers wouldn't speak to me. Meanwhile, my warrior's chest wound was getting pretty dangerous, so I ended up scavenging herbs and barely keeping it from turning fatal until I made my way to a merchant who sold me enough meds to fully heal it over multiple campsites. I had to explore the map, scavenge locations, train party healing and witchcraft, etc. Pretty immersive.
