Wasted Potential.
Before getting into why the tittle of this review is the way it is, I'll mention what I actually liked about Evertried.

The game looks beautiful. I love anything that uses pixel art and this one does it smoothly. The soundtrack is nice as well, it's repetitive due to the game formula, but it's not irritating. The gameplay is simple yet addictive. I forgot where I read this to give the person proper credit, but it feels like a puzzle game that relies on quick thinking (or else, you'll lose the focus meter). And it is oh so rewarding when you clear a level smoothly !

Now, onto what grinds my gears. THIS GAME HAS NOT BEEN PLAY TESTED ! Why am I making such a bold statement ? Well : → The game is riddled with glitches. Using spells on Bosses is a literal hazard. At best, it will do what it does or have no effect. At worse, you break the whole fight and either die or soft lock yourself. Examples* : - Using Thunder Orb on the first Boss does nothing unless you aim your spell at the vulnerable skull. So the bounce effect is useless in here. - Using Turret on the second Boss is just a no no. Like honestly, don't even bother. He would charge into the turret and start throwing axes immediately after, without becoming vulnerable. So that's fun ! → The Fifth area. That's my argument, just the Fifth area (i.e. Floors 41 to 50). Because the moment you breathe wrong, it soft locks you. Mobs disappear randomly, the light traps stay on even if the stones are destroyed, the pink horned monsters dash into each other (Even if they normally move from an order of left to right, top to bottom) leading to awkward positioning, etc etc. And this is just the Normal Mode that I'm talking about. Hard Mode is almost impossible. Granted, I did clear it (Hard mode) after getting soft locked 3 TIMES on Floors 47, 46 and 43. And I had to start another run ... AGAIN. And hope and pray that everything goes right. Here is the thing, I don't mind difficulty. If it was a skill issue on my part, my mouth would be shut. HOWEVER, if the game continuously breaks ? I'm going to blame the game, not my skills. → The "Cursed Plague" and "Perfect Fit" achievements don't work. I killed 4 enemies with one cast of Curse (I know, I really got lucky there), and ... Nothing. So I guess screw me, right ? As for Perfect Fit, I think it's either broken or the text is wrong. Because I did land the spell on 3 enemies, but I didn't get the achievement. I wanted to try landing it on 4 enemies, but getting enemies in a "T" shape is hard and I'm sick of the game already. I do want to add "Ascended Soul", but I honestly didn't bother giving it a chance at this point. Even if the idea of Floors 31 to 50 with no spells or items sounds undoable (and at this point, might be), I can't say whether it works or not. → This one is not as bad the above, but leveling up Roulette ? YIKES. Let me run you through the process : So, get this, you have to start a run right ? Good. You'll reach level 5 (or any level that ends with 5) and see the shop options (which are 5 in total : Either 3 Spells and 2 Items OR 2 Spells and 3 Items). There are 20 spells in total ... But hey, you got lucky and got Roulette. Super fun. Now you'll have to level it up right ? Onto level 6, you collect enough charges, use Roulette .... And you died ! Oh, tragic. Now you'll have to do it ... Again. I don't have it in me to download the game again and start a new save file to figure out how many uses it takes for a spell to upgrade. But basically it's a lot. And the achievement just rewards you for ... Being lucky, I guess ? You can grind the other spells the legit way with zero problems. But I find Roulette's achievement to be annoying honestly. Getting full mastery on it is just wild. → And last but certainly not least, Endless Mode... I need proof, visual proof, that level 51 and beyond exist. Because There is NO WAY anyone did that. Not because of the difficulty, oh no, no. It's because you WILL get soft locked at Floor 50. No matter what. No matter how fast or slow you move, you'll try to leave the shop and get soft locked. So the 0.3% people who got the achievements for 51 and 100 floors in Endless Mode ? Nu huh, BS. And btw, I'm not accusing them of cheating as. Because once I've had enough with the game, I decided to play around with a cheat engine and see. And wow, would you look at that, you can't reach floor 51 with a cheat engine, let alone the legit way.

Ok. Maybe I got carried a bit. I legit care about the game. I really do. But good god was I bothered by how broken it is. This review is not even cathartic at all, because I legit wanted to enjoy the game to its fullest ... But hey, that's the way the cookie crumbles. Anyways, if you're seeking a roguelike experience without too much investment in the game, by all means. Get yourself a copy and play ahead. However, if you're seeking a challenge, or you're a completionist ? Avoid the game like the plague. It's an exercise in futility. *All the spells (except Roulette) are in their final form for this review.
Disappointing. I was hoping this was a strategy game like Into The Breach. Instead it's a single-character movement-based puzzle. Mechanics of enemy movement are random and unclear. Controller support is very poor. Crashed only a few levels in.
game seems great so far, only bug i have encountered is that i get an achievement for mastering a skill when i only leveled it up once other than that it's been fun, and i wanna see what all the other skills that have not shown themselves are
In my opinion this is far too punishing and difficult to progress in for a game with such little going on for it.
It's close to being a great game. Presentation is fantastic, and the levels are pretty fun. I'll probably even play it after this negative review. There are some key pain points for me though: - The bosses suck. They take too long and they aren't fun. I especially hate the first boss, which offers 0 threat and does nothing except slow you down for far too long. But the next 2 I've found are also tedious. The game would be infinitely better if the first boss (or all bosses) was just removed. - There are pointless and awful story beats that sometimes interrupt the game. They are badly written and they take more time than is fun. - it's not a fast game. By which I meant that while each individual level is pretty quick (except the bosses), there are 10 levels of each 'world', so getting back to the last point you died is a slog. I'd love some sort of checkpoint system so I don't have to repeat 20-30 levels each time I play. Perhaps removing some of the more awful bosses would help this.
