i liked it :>
Love the art style and story to this a lot <3
Fun lil puzzle platfomer
the last scene its absolute cinema
A fun little game with an incredibly moving ending! The puzzle design was genius, new mechanics for each area were introduced in a way that felt both intuitive and fun. I never once felt like the game was holding my hand when it came to each level's challenges. Each mechanic was unique and built upon each other in very fun ways. The story is very much like a visual novel, with the player having little to no agency. So many NPC stories felt like there should be more to explore/discover. Sadly, if there was a way to do so, I wasn't able to figure out how. Any actions you take don't impact the world/plot in any meaningful way beyond what was predestined by the devs. Not to say this is a negative! From the beginning, Even the Ocean was presented as a story, with the first character you meet being named the "storyteller." If you enjoy that sort of experience, the story was quite well written! If you don't, there is a mode where you can just play the puzzles. My only disappointment was that the world felt like it had so much more to offer than what was given to us. The art design was amazing, with every you place you explore having its own fun, unique vibe. TLDR: Even the Ocean was a very fun and beautiful puzzle platformer with a moving story, but a sad lack of side stories and area depth. I was left wanting so much more!
This is a fun, original and worthwhile game, but it's trying to do similar things as Analgesic's later games which makes it fall a bit flat if you've played those first. It's still realy cool to see how the devs evolved from Anodyne to their newer games. I really enjoyed the platforming mechanics too, I could've played a game focused around that with no story and I sort of wish there was more of it. Philosophically, I don't find it as meaningful or thought-provoking as their newer releases, but it was still satisfying to complete with a nice ending to tie it together cleanly. All that said, I didn't take my time with this one like I have with their other games, and I'd only recommend it so long as you try one of their newer releases as well. Sephonie, Anodyne 2 and Angeline Era all nail the esoteric, thought provoking narrative much better, and those games were much more of a treat to explore. I still liked the more linear and staightforward story here though, and thematically this game is pretty strong, especially since it's backed up by the compelling art and music you can count on these devs to deliver in each game.
I despise writing review but as I'm on my way to complete my Analgesic game overview I couldn't in good conscience not help recommending it to people. It's softspoken, endearing, and as generous as analgesic games get. Not my favorite of the bunch but still delightful for what it suggests, what it could be, and what it realizes. Play it, don't read about it.
This is one of my favorite games of all time.
