Listen - I would really like to love this game. The artstyle and art are incredible, and you can tell there was so much love and unique craziness poured into the visuals. As a very linear platform type game, this probably would've been fine, or even a point'n'click adventure - but that's not what it is. It's a very repetitive side-scrolling brawler in a very confusing environment with a map that's very hard to read, tons of locked doors that won't open until a random quest tells you it opens and countless fetch quests that ask you to kill the same enemies over and over and over and over and over again until you got 25 of whatever rare item they drop. The humor, creative artstyle and zaniness in this game are undeniable, but it's ruined by said fetch quests, the overly wordy dialogue (which is admittedly pretty funny, but can't be easily skipped or sped through) and the combat as well as the technical issues. On Steam Deck, some people have reported crashes - I did not experience those, but the menu has glitched out for me several times, leaving me unable to cycle through the tabs I need to read quest info or look at a bigger map. You can hold the select button for a radial menu, which is a workaround, but this still shouldn't happen. The loading times are way too long as well, especially the minute it takes to load when the game starts up. Combat is done by equipping skills which all have their own internal cooldown. Often all those skills will be on cooldown, so you walk around until the cooldown resets - rinse and repeat. The skills themselves are creative and wacky, but there is no real flow to combat, no dodge button and no way to attack aside from skills, leading to a lot of standing or walking around while you can't do anything, while enemies are not subject to those restrictions. The quests, as mentioned, aren't really that great. Most are fetch quests and an hour of playing was enough to realize what kind of gameplay was aimed for. Get quest, get 20 of a thing with rare droprates, turn in, rinse and repeat. Get quest to find a thing, have no idea where said thing is, not complete quest until you randomly stumble upon said thing in a completely different unconnected area. You need to do those quests to get stronger and unlock social skills which make you stronger too, so it's essentially just endless grinding with the mediocre combat until you're strong enough for the next story step. The map is confusing, many areas are inaccessible until the game allows you in, and you can explore pretty much any part of the school after the prologue, which leads to a lot of walking around aimlessly until you realize the area you're in has monsters way too strong for you and the map just isn't informative enough to quickly and easily point you in the right direction. I wish this game was made to be a more linear sidescroller with better combat, or a point'n'click as mentioned - it would've been more fun and I would've been able to see more of the great artstyle and (mostly) good humor. In fact, I think the game would be incredible as some sort of zany adventure with puzzles. It's a shame it didn't click for me as the soundtrack isn't all that bad either. But playing the game, the main aspect of it, is repetitive, boring and one-dimensional - for a game that's reportedly 25-30 hours long, I can't imagine playing it for this long when it's issues become apparent so early. Amazing first impression, but sadly there is not much meat on the bones, and what's there went bad a while ago.
Fighting is repetitive. There are times that all your moves are on cooldown and you can't even do anything. You can swap out some moves for others but I don't enjoy this type of combat at all, I just feel like I'm spamming these buttons repeatedly. It's almost like a beat 'em up, but I would much rather play any other one of those because at least my moves won't be on cooldown and there will be less silly dialogue. Visuals were nice though.
Underrated
This is the story of an underdog. Silent and unassuming, easy to miss. But in truth a super deluxe potential lies within, waiting only to be unleashed! This is the story of this game. It took me a bit to get into the groove of the game, but once I got past the first few levels, it really clicked and things opened up. The combat was surprisingly rich with many moves to custom tailor your playstyle, I think it's the first time I played a game with a beat em up type combat and yet feels like a metroidvania (more on the vania side). The map was really good, showing you all you need from one, and with essential locating upgrades to reduce pointless pixel hunting late game. There's a fair amount of side quests being "beat x enemies" but I think it fits for the RPG beat em up gameplay to remove any need for regular grinding. I think my main annoyance with the game is that the text speed is quite slow, and the dialogue button can't be remapped and is not the regular interact button. I love absurdist games that take seriously an unserious world, it had many moments that had me laugh or smile. The whole vibe overall with gameplay and comedy is very feel good with some nostalgia. The art style and animations are extremely competent and contribute to the whole perfectly with how goofy they can look. The same can be said of the sounds and music, I love that most of the tracks have voices that sing Daryl's name. The story goes places, yet can manage to take you off guard with a comedic twist but never at the detriment of the game's credibility. How the
Valedictorian is incredibly useless and did less to hinder you than the weakest Honor Student. Or how you never actually manage to defeat the Science Honor Student regularly
. Despite some growing pains, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this game. It was not lost through History, he answered the call.
I played this game so long ago and I still think about out it every now and then. Incredible writing, top notch comedy, and it has co-op. Forget It Takes Two, play this with your significant other, and you'll make some real memories.
The game is sometimes funny, but it's very confusing and also buggy in the worst places. There's often no idea what to do or where to go in quests. There's no real info about them. Just "something is happening somewhere." Some might like it - I prefer a bit more info. The humour is ok sometimes, bad often. It's a question of taste and style. It's not the worst by far. The main character literally never speaking is quite a good touch though. But the bugs... I played almost through the whole game with very little issues but then it started. Locked up in an area and enemies just go out of reach? Restart many times before managing to kill them before it happened. Final boss is multiple stages with unskippable babble in between. This time crashes, Daryl being pushed out of bounds and unable to hit an enemy... Yeah. Restart restart restart. Had to redo the fight five times even though I could've done it in one go. Just look at the achievements: most people who ever played this have not played it much. All the achievements are less than 10%. Just finishing the game is now at 6%! So that says something. But you do you, I'm sure this game has its audience.

As a metroidvania, Super Daryl Deluxe is pretty bland, but the art style, humor, and action-packed combat sold it to me. Combat is simple but satisfying. It's basically a button-smashing beat'em up, but comboing the skills is fun. There are plenty of skills to choose from, and almost everything is viable. You are constantly finding new skills, better gear, and unlocking areas with new enemies. Fast-travel could unlock sooner, though.
Ok so this might be my first not recommended review... the game itself is not bad. Maybe a bit more tedious than necessary, a bit longer than necessary, but it's by no means a bad game. It's rather a very unique one and it provides a very quirky, interesting experience. Now why would I give this bad review? The crashes! There are just too many. Couple that with an only-manual save game and it gets on your nerves eventually (and I consider myself a fairly patient person and a very patient gamer). Besides the seemingly random crashes (they usually have something to do with some progress you made or with a room you switched), there seem to be some fixed ones. The third Battle Training crashed 3 times on me in the last phase (no clue if it was the same exact moment, didn't time it). I don't know, I want to recommend it, but these crashes make for a frustrating experience and they add up. Having to repeat some 5minute room/fight/whatever once in a while is not awful, having to do that every hour or so? no, the pressure to save every freakin move because THE GAME MIGHT CRASH, not because you might die, is too much. I just can't push myself for another ~10 or so hours of this. Played this on PC, 5700X3D + 6700XT, Win11. No clue if the game doesn't like something specific. Maybe I'll revisit some day, maybe...
