Sir Arthur has gotten old... too old. He has lost everything he had and loved, and with nothing more to lose he leaves for Samarnath, an evil subterranean kingdom in search of treasures, adventures and the most important: five magical orbs that together provide: the Eternal youth.

If you're a gamer of a certain age, this can be easily summarised: Mario Bros meets Pac-Man meets Ghosts and Goblins. It has the style of G&G in it's music, looks, and basic attack mechanics for the player, whilst it has the "single screen" platform gameplay of Mario Bros, and the enemy behaviour of Pac-Man (albeit much more defined and "smarter") For me it's up there with the likes of Bubble Bobble / Pang / Snow Bros / Bombjack / Rainbow Islands etc, as a simple but fun bite-sized experience, that takes a hook and runs with it. The aim is straightforward: get all the chests in a level, and then get to a portal. There's a time limit to do so, but it's not super strict, and is only a mild challenge within the game. A more immediate difficulty comes from the enemies who roam around the level, and constantly respawn. There's ones who run from side to side, but will drop down levels and jump up onto platforms There's ones that fly and don't follow a set routine There's invulnerable ones There's brains that shoot their eyeballs at you There's eggs that spew out flying maggots Each type is introduced by themselves to present a different challenge, and then blended later on to mix up the elements you need to be aware of. What starts off as a gentle difficulty level becomes more frantic, as you evade ground enemies, dodge flying ones, and swipe homing eyeballs out of the air, whilst jumping around platforms. But even the timer, and the enemies, aren't the biggest *fudger*s in this game. No! That would be the traps and collapsing platforms that they introduce. You see, I neglected to mention there are chests that require hitting the floor underneath them, by jumping up, to be opened. This process takes 3 three hits to be exact. It doesn't sound a lot does it? As De La Soul told us "Three! It's a magic number!" But imagine trying to do that whilst avoiding, or battering, zombie hags who amble around like numpties before suddenly lunging screeching at you. So you avoid, or batter, the hag. Some dirty eyeball spitting brain thing has spat it's eyeball at you, but you swipe that mo *fudga* out of the air. You totally rock! You land on the collapsing platform, and jump up once to strike the breakable chest, before quickly jumping to the next collapsible platform. You repeat the process, and drop to the floor. One more strike to go...... The platforms reappear, and you quickly leap up. It's........ done! Fist pump! The moment where, in your triumph, you forget that the platform you just landed on will disappear again, and you fall onto a zombie hag down below, and you die. Again. Just like all those other times where you thought "ah! you piece of pish! I am your master!" and you then died looking like an overconfident fool. Did Darkest Dungeon not tell us that "overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer", why, yes! It did. And it is so. Except in this game you'll get dead pretty "quick", rather than "slow". Oh, it will give you lives. It will give you a save, and generous check-pointing. It will give you extra lives, though you have to take risks to get those. A spoonful of sugar helps it's vile, hateful medicine go down, as it kills you in ever different ways. And always the fault is only ever your own..... Your lives, seemingly so abundant for such an easy proposition, are dropping like flies. Those continues? soon eaten up. And upon losing them all you have to restart the stage. 5 levels per stage, five stages, and five bosses. Just enough challenge and frustration for you to say "ah! you *fudger*!", but more than enough fun and simplicity in it's challenge to draw you back in for one more quick go. The joy of progress, before then getting to a much trickier penultimate boss stage, where it's now a vertically scrolling platformer. That again, starts off easy and becomes quite a tricky *fudger* as it goes on. Once you've done that, you have a boss battle. And those are tricky *fudgers* too. Everything. Everything about it. Everything about it means you could easily mistake it for a classic arcade game. The way it plays. The cartoony but detailed sprites. The groovy 8bit style music that has gothic horror if it was filtered through funk sensibilities. After a couple of hours spent veering between having a big grin on my face, and wanting to smash my controller against the wall, I had reached stage 3, and got stuck. That's about halfway through the content, and for what it's given me in terms of satisfaction, even at this stage I'd say it's totally worth it. There's leaderboards if you want to pursue getting high scores, and for the achievement hunters it's easy to get loads, as one is handed out for completing levels / stages etc. They're not difficult to get generally, other than obviously having to finish the game. And you will be likely to want to finish it, as whilst the challenge is tough, it's not unfairly so. The game will entice you one more time, and you'll do better. At least up until the point where you die again, and you tell yourself "Right! That's it. I'm not playing it anymore" But that's a big fat lie.....you know you're going to play it again. The triumph, the glory...it's so close. Just one more go, and you will overcome this oh so simple thing that has vexed you.... Probably..... <forgets that collapsible platforms can be jumped up through, and gets killed by something that looks like a cross between a piranha and an aubergine> "oh you *fudger*!" <Rage quits thinking about Eternum Ex anymore.

https://youtu.be/pT23UNQtz4U
他にもアクションやメトロイドヴァニア系をSteamキュレーターで紹介しています。 良かったら御覧ください。
Competently made but boring AF. No challenge, no subtleties or nuances. Just a plain old boring perfunctory platformer where you gather chests and can optionally break them open by hitting them from below first. Except there's no reason to bother doing that because all it does is slow the already dull gameplay down. I only died after the 1st boss because I was bored and really stopped caring. Missing lots of polish such as being able to return to the main menu from a game only QTD, plus you can't skip the annoying intro screen even though you've already read it all, nor can you adjust settings like sound/music or turn off the scanlines effect, which is a huge annoyance. It has the cuteness and retro feel, but it is simply not fun in any way. I refunded.
Good retro!! It plays really nice, controls are very well implemented. The graphics and animation are great and the music is very good. It replicates everything that was great about this kind of games, when I was a kid. It is a pleasure to play a new game that could have been realesed at the end of the 80s. This is new material today where you can see the effort and dedication of doing a master piece inspired on that periode's games.
Something is REALLY wrong with the controls. They will just stop working, intermittently. Considering a refund if I don't hear back from the developers today.
Eternum EX is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This console ported 2D retro pixel platformer is an "arcade" like experience, which is another way of saying it's incredibly dumbed down even for a platformer. This is so dumbed down it makes Super Mario Bros look like Factorio. You jump around on a small platformer level while monsters spawn. Shoot/slash the monsters, collect all the treasure chests and move on. There's some tougher levels and challenges, but the game is basically a brain dead 1980's B-grade experience. The technical implementation is on par... equally dismal. So at least there's symmetry. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers. Insultingly, the game demands I press the "fire" button to start the game. My keyboard doesn't have a bloody fire button. Developers should at least pretend to try to understand what platform they're developing games for. Because this is a console game, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 4 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Eternum EX has the greedy, cash grab price of around $8 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
Profile Features Limited!
Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
Got up to the first boss; won't have time to pull this out again for a long while in lieu of larger AAA games I need to finish however this is spot on the money for a 16-bit retro fix. A game I would've paid upwards of $30 for in the mid-nineties and put over two hundred hours into completing over and over again. Shelve this between Pac-Man and Super Ghost N Goblins Good stuff!
Awesome game, perfect controls, incredible gameplay a must play for anyone who loves arcade...
Eternum EX is platformer that claims to have that retro look and feel of old arcade games, and quite frankly, I agree with those claims. Eternum EX brings together the music, graphics, gameplay, and downright frustrating experience that is so memorable from the old classics! I was never any good at the arcades, and I’m no good at this! That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy or appreciate the game though! Upon starting the game you’re greeted with some scrolling text with the introductory story. The reason behind the levels you’re about to go insane trying to beat, death after death. Following that, the entrance menu for the game. There you see an animation of an elderly Arthur collecting chests and picking up items from them. That’s shortly followed by a key/legend detailing each item. Beneath that, “Press fire to start”, and you’re in! Game on! Well, not quite. Next you choose between “Home Mode”, which saves you progress after each world (every 5 levels), but limits you to 3 credits, or “Arcade Mode”, where no progress is saved, but you have unlimited credits. Beneath this still, “Press fire to start”! All that’s left is to select your world (only one option in Arcade mode and until you progress in Home Mode). “Press fire to start” one last time! Now game on! For real this time! The aim of the game is to collect all the chests to open the portal and progress to the next level before the time runs out. Hitting the chest from underneath a couple of times before collecting will generally spawn a random item. These could be extra lives, magical powers that open all chests close to you, flaming balls of fury, extra points to boost your score, teleports, or a few other useful items. While the first couple of maps have only one enemy type with basic movements, this soon changes as you progress, making each level more chaotic and challenging than the other. Even the controls and responsiveness of them gave me that raging kick of nostalgia. By that I mean I could occasionally swear that I had clicked jump on time, but instead fall onto a monster, just like I remember from my childhood! Every fifth level is a boss level. Here you have to climb a tower, killing and avoiding enemies to keep as many lives as possible for the boss battle upon reaching the top! There just so happens to be tempting items along the way too, which often resulted in me getting killed by enemies. I’ve come across 3 bosses so far, and each one has been completely different to each other, requiring different tactics to defeat. I already said I’m no good at this game, which is probably why I’ve only managed to reach the third boss so far (level 15). I’ve not managed to beat it yet. One day, maybe! Oh, each level also hides a secret! I’m not going to ruin this for anyone by going into detail! Let’s just say it took me some time to figure out what the secrets were! I’d love to say I knew exactly what I was doing, but the first time was a complete coincidence and discovered simply through panic! So far I’ve managed to find the first 14 secrets, but I’ll no doubt be trying for the next ones shortly, after a little more sweat and tears getting through the levels (I really do suck at this). While not my typical game of choice, Eternum EX is a truly refreshing, and somewhat infuriating retro platformer! While you may consider 25 levels short, if you suck as much as I do, you’ll find it more than enough! It’s not something I can play for hours on end, but it’s something I’ll enjoy every now and then for half an hour or so. I need to beat the rest of the game and find those secrets after all!
