Good game, it's a classic of the indie scene, you probably already know its deal at this point, but it doesn't run at all on Steam Deck. The shaders fail to compile and the game crashes every time I launch it. It'd be nice if the devs patched it, but I doubt they'd do that at this point. (It's been over 10 years and there's a remake.)
♥♥♥♥ 3-2 i hate this ♥♥♥♥ u have to do 5 pixel perfect jumps in a row why did you even make this stupid bonus level i hate everything about this single level and it ruined the entire game for me
The granddaddy of rhythm runners and still hard to beat! Which childhood did I originally play this in? My third, my fourth? I don't know -- I'm on either my sixth or seventh right now. Whenever it was that I Bit.Trip ran on my Wii before work in the mornings, I remember it felt like falling into intense, no-mind meditation . . . and the game's still the same after all these years! The simple, sharp graphics have an undying appeal for me. Every action or ITEM GET generating a musical bleat that should be in time with the soundtrack makes me half-consciously synchronize with the levels in a way that's so, so satisfying when I win . . . so alluring when I've lost by a hair. Of course, the Bonus Get stages utterly lack music, so you've got to use only your eye. I really wanted to hundred-percent all of these extra inna woods segments, but each Bonus Get attempt requires you to first re-beat the main level, perfectly, yet again, and isn't that a little too much? It kind of takes me out of the no-mind state . . . What is Captain Video, anyway? A cylindrical guy in a suit? Or is he one and the same with the suit, sort of like Jotaro is with his cap? Either way, this whole series is great, and if you like this one, the second is fantastic too.
Played this game on both Wii and PC and I will continue to open it up every once in awhile for the rest of my days.
Sadly, this game is simply not fun. Visually, I don't find it appealing, and the focus on near-perfect execution of relatively simple sequences doesn't have nearly the hook or depth of other runner/rhythm games.
Only 11.7% of players can get past the first zone. This simple ass game is actually... not a simple ass game... wait no it's just missing checkpoints. Difficult to recommend but I enjoyed it, just don't go for 100%. edit: just beat the game. last few levels are super super hard before the final boss. i absolutely reconsider recommending this game, please play the remake BIT.TRIP.RERUNNER instead.
CERTIFIED HOOD CLASSIC
Boring and hardcore in a bad way.
BIT.TRIP RUNNER is a punishing but genuinely addictive rhythm auto-runner that had me completely hooked on its chiptune soundtrack and tight controls — until the brutal difficulty spikes nearly broke me. The way your button presses weave into the music is incredibly satisfying, and that dopamine hit when you finally clear a level you've been grinding is unlike anything else. That said, the zero-checkpoint design means you'll be replaying long stretches of levels you've already mastered just to die to something you couldn't have seen coming, which gets exhausting fast — especially around 1-11 and the final world. If you have patience and love a stiff challenge, this cult classic is absolutely worth it; if rage-quitting sounds like your nightmare, maybe start with Runner 2 instead.
I stayed up way past my bed time, out of part stubborness, part genuine enjoyment of the game. I had set my goal for the night to try and finish the first act. There were some obstacles but still, I perservered. Then came the Odyssey level. I thought "ok, that must be it, this was so long and so difficult, I will get to have a break now." Then came the last level, the boss fight. I thought then, how much longer could this possibly go on for? It felt like being trapped in purgatory as I failed over and over again, watching myself repeat the same mistakes again and again, only to be transported to the very beginning of the level. I have no idea how the other games play, and I'm not sure I ever care to find out. I sure do hope they have added a checkpoint feature or at least some sort of practice mode. Yeah, I know that reset are fast, yeah I know there is a point to the lack of checkpoints but whatever, I like to have FUN with my videogames sometimes. Is that such a crime? I write this with a heavy heart as I do truly believe this might be a so-called "good game". However, this was also one of the most infuriating experiences ever (personally) and it evoked emotions in me that I do not wish to feel while playing videogames. Ok, rant over. Uninstalling this one and shelving it.
