Two words: Monkey Kombat. Honestly, apart from that, I actually really love this game. It's warm, zany and has nice music. I particularly like Luca Island's town ambient song. I just hum it away while I play. It rates lowest on my list for the whole franchise, but that says more about the franchise than the game as a whole. If this is the lowest Monkey Island ever got, then damn is this a good franchise.
Okay. So. Let me ask you a few questions. 1) Do you like the Monkey Island series? (And if so, do you NOT care about Guybrush or Elaine's characterization?) 2) Are you okay with downloading external software and messing with the game's files a bit in order to even get it to run? 3) Are you very stubborn and/or patient, enough that you can deal with intense glitches and some very broken puzzles? 4) Are you okay with putting up with VERY dated humor involving things like racism and fatphobia? If the answer to ANY of these is "NO," then DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME. DO NOT BUY IT. DO NOT PUT YOURSELF THROUGH THIS. I've been playing through the entire Monkey Island franchise and thoroughly enjoying it... until now. I'd heard that this game was rough, but I was willing to try to give it a shot regardless. Maybe there would be some hidden gems in here that would make it worth playing. Maybe, in spite of everything, it would be fun or enjoyable. I was so, so very wrong. To be fair, there were moments I enjoyed. I did laugh at a handful of jokes. I enjoyed the animation--the game has some great animation for its time. It was nice hearing some familiar voice actors and some of the returning characters, and even a few of the new characters were fun. But all of those moments were so far overshadowed by how ATROCIOUS the rest of the game is. First off, YES, I had to download an external program to even get the game to load. But it still had problems! Every single time I opened the game I had to go through multiple confirmation screens asking me if I REALLY wanted to play the game. (I began to question myself the more times I got asked.) I had to ctrl+alt+delete to switch windows. I encountered glitches that made the game harder to play than it should have been, such as a prevailing glitch where switching between actions (while Guybrush can still be controlled) resulted in every other action being skipped, which made a timed puzzle absolutely HELLISH later on. There were parts where simple actions took several minutes, such as Guybrush hopping onto a raft, or characters getting stuck in a walking loop. At one point Guybrush was stuck in a rowing animation (while still being playable) for MULTIPLE HOURS. THIS GAME DOES NOT WANT TO BE PLAYED. But even without the glitches, the game is a mess. Guybrush and Elaine go from being a cute couple to a Stereotypical Straight Married Couple featuring Dumb Husband and Wife Who Hates Him. Elaine is constantly mean to Guybrush for no reason, and Guybrush will switch from being "hey I'm married, isn't that cool?" to being extremely creepy to every woman he meets. A lot of Guybrush's actions in the previous games are retroactively made horrible, and this combined with his characterization just makes him unpleasant a good chunk of the time. Aaaand then the puzzles. Look, I was born in the 80s. I've played my fair share of adventure games. Yes, I know they can be jank and weird and confusing. But a lot of the times I can put up with it if the rest of the game is fun. That is... not the case here. With all the other Monkey Island games I happily figured out as many solutions as I could on my own, only asking for help when I was truly stuck. Here, I was CONSTANTLY getting lost and confused. (I will say, though--I heard a lot of talk about how much people hated Monkey Kombat, and it was oddly one of the easier puzzles for me and gave me little trouble.) And one puzzle late in the game involving timing a series of rocks combined with the action glitch I was getting nearly made me quit the game. (I DID complete it, and if you're still playing this game for some reason and want help with that, I wrote detailed step-by-step instructions on how to complete the puzzle in a post about it on the discussion forums.) But I didn't quit. I probably should have. And I probably should not have been able to beat this game, with everything it was leveling against me. But I did. But, no, I do not recommend this game unless you are ABSOLUTELY DEDICATED to playing every single Monkey Island game out there, or unless you played this in the past and have some nostalgia for it. Remember... you can Escape from Monkey Island (TM)... by avoiding it altogether.
Escape from Monkey Island™ is the fourth main entry in LucasArts’ iconic adventure series, released at a time when the genre itself was undergoing a dramatic shift. Coming after the warmly received The Curse of Monkey Island, this installment takes a bold step into full 3D presentation and a new control philosophy, attempting to modernize a franchise that had long been defined by hand-drawn art and classic point-and-click interaction. The result is a game that is unmistakably Monkey Island in spirit, yet noticeably different in execution, making it one of the most debated entries in the series. It is ambitious, often funny, occasionally frustrating, and ultimately a fascinating snapshot of both LucasArts and adventure games at the turn of the millennium. The story picks up immediately after Guybrush Threepwood and Elaine Marley return from their honeymoon, only to discover that Elaine has been legally declared dead and her role as governor of Mêlée Island is up for grabs. From this absurd premise unfolds a satirical tale about politics, commercialization, and identity, with pirates facing the threat of becoming obsolete in a Caribbean being transformed into a sanitized tourist attraction. New antagonist Ozzie Mandrill, a corporate-minded outsider with a taste for focus groups and branding, serves as a clever thematic foil to the series’ romanticized pirate nonsense. The narrative hops between familiar locations and new islands, reintroducing old faces while expanding the world with fresh characters who lean heavily into the game’s critique of bureaucracy and modern consumer culture. While the plot is more sprawling and sometimes less tightly paced than earlier entries, it consistently delivers humorous scenarios and clever dialogue that reinforce Monkey Island’s enduring charm. The most immediately noticeable change is the move to fully 3D environments and character models, powered by the GrimE engine. Guybrush is no longer a flat, animated sprite but a fully realized 3D character, and players control him directly using keyboard or controller inputs rather than mouse-driven clicks. This design choice dramatically alters how the game feels to play. Movement can be stiff and awkward, particularly for players accustomed to the fluid simplicity of classic point-and-click adventures. Navigating tight spaces or lining up interactions sometimes feels more difficult than it should, creating moments where the interface itself becomes a barrier to immersion. That said, once players adapt to the control scheme, exploration becomes more natural, and the environments reveal a surprising level of detail and personality, with camera angles and set dressing doing a lot of storytelling work behind the scenes. Puzzle design remains at the heart of the experience, and this is where the game most clearly connects to its roots. Many puzzles are clever, multi-layered, and built around verbal wit or playful misdirection rather than pure logic. Conversations often double as puzzle mechanics, encouraging players to pay close attention to dialogue and character motivations. However, some puzzles push the limits of abstraction, occasionally requiring leaps of reasoning that feel more obscure than satisfying. The most controversial mechanic is Monkey Kombat, a recurring mini-game that replaces traditional insult sword fighting with a parody of combo-based combat. Players must learn and deploy sequences of nonsense phrases in a rock-paper-scissors-style system that is intentionally convoluted. While the concept fits the series’ sense of humor, its repeated use can disrupt pacing and test patience, turning what might have been a brief joke into a prolonged obstacle. Despite these mechanical quirks, the game’s writing, voice acting, and music do much of the heavy lifting in maintaining its appeal. The humor is sharp and self-aware, filled with callbacks to earlier games, genre jokes, and satirical commentary that rewards longtime fans. Voice performances are lively and expressive, giving characters a strong sense of identity and comedic timing that elevates even mundane interactions. The musical score reinforces the Caribbean atmosphere with familiar themes and playful variations, helping tie the new visual style back to the series’ classic tone. Even when the graphics show their age, these audio elements ensure the game still feels unmistakably like Monkey Island. In retrospect, Escape from Monkey Island occupies an unusual place in the franchise’s history. It is often labeled the weakest of the original LucasArts era, not because it lacks heart or creativity, but because its design choices clash with the expectations set by its predecessors. Yet it is also a game full of personality, ambition, and genuinely memorable moments. For players willing to accept its idiosyncrasies and approach it on its own terms, it offers a lengthy, humorous adventure that expands the Monkey Island universe in unexpected ways. While it may not reach the effortless elegance of the series’ high points, it remains a worthwhile experience—one that reflects both the growing pains of a genre in transition and the enduring strength of Monkey Island’s characters, humor, and irreverent spirit. Rating: 5/10
After 38 hours, I have finaly beat the Escape from Monkey Island (TM) without using any guide or help. I must say, this is not worth it. Main story is okay at best, but in general character dialogs and writing is good and funny. And story literally takes of and continues from the previous game, so if you want to know what happens next, you should also play Escape from Monkey Island (TM). But you will not be able to enjoy Escape from Monkey Island (TM) compare to other monkey island games that came before Escape from Monkey Island (TM). Why? Because everything is 3D and there is no mouse cursor on the screen. You have to use arrow keys to move the Guybrush and make sure he is facing the right object for you to interact with. Also for Guybrush to interact with anything you need to use other keys on your keyboard. Like for you to hear his comments on the object please press (E), for talking with and NPC or use an item please press (U), and for some reason if you want to pick some object please press (P), etc etc. Annoying and ineffective. For last, puzzles. Some puzzles are simple, you might think, but they are not. Layers on layers. Endless circles between characters and areas and items. Non stop checking, trying, looking and double-triple checking everything. And then there are trolling items that sits in your inventory, doing nothing, helping nothing, not even helping the story or building up the Monkey Island lore, they are just wasting your time and your attention. What a nightmare. There are some puzzles that in the game, just for to waste your time. There are no in game hints where sometimes Guybrush tells when he speaks, or hints a possible area or character that might know what's what, there are no work arounds or anything else. You have to check every possible answer one by one and hope you can find as soon as possible. What a bad and unnecessary game design. I have expected something different from the game and didn't get it, but I'm glad that I have finally be able to played it and finished it. It was in my mind for a very long time. Note: You cannot use steam overlay when you play the game and can't even use ALT - TAB to move between windows. Only way to minimize the game was for me to use CTRL + ALT + DELETE and use the task manager. So when you need to take notes when you play the game use a real paper and pen or use your phone like I did.
An admirable effort to bring the art style into 3D, decent backgrounds, and classic music can't save this game from frustrating navigation and poor puzzles. To top it off, most of the writing is bad! This would be a poor game on its own, but the drop in quality compared to Curse of Monkey Island is unfathomable. If you are running through the series, you don't have to skip this one. But keep a walkthrough handy and be prepared for a handful of crashes or progress blocking bugs.
This is a tough one to review. Most of the time, you catch yourself thinking, “Why fix what’s not broken?” The previous three games kept the point-and-click formula focused on actually clicking. Escape from Monkey Island came at a time when 3D graphics were everything, but sadly, I do not think this series needed that change. Forget about your mouse; you will be using your keyboard or joystick, if supported. The movement is clunky and will drive you crazy. While in the previous games you spent a lot of time walking from place to place, here you will spend your time figuring out how to walk in a straight line. I know Guybrush is a wacky character, but that doesn’t mean I have to walk like a lunatic. The art quality is also a downgrade. The series lost some of its charm when it shifted to these 3D prism-like character models. The only thing that stayed consistently great is the voice acting of our beloved characters. As far as the story goes, it was good enough that, even with the new mechanics, I kept coming back to finish it. So in the end, it wasn’t dreadful. But would I have enjoyed this game more if the art style and mechanics had been similar to the other games in the franchise? Absolutely. Because what makes the Monkey Island games work is their story, the new places we explore, the new characters we meet, and the zany dialogue. With all things considered, Escape from Monkey Island is the only game in the franchise that I would not fully recommend. Play it if you are a fan, but if you mainly love these games for how the first three looked and felt, this one may be a pass for you.
Cons: * Tank controls * No mouse support * Seems to be designed for consoles Pros: * Writing, humor, and voice acting are top notch * Played with a walkthrough is very enjoyable
The game is good but the controls are poor, there's bugs and skips in dialog, so I can't recommend it. I'd mark it as positive if the dialog didn't skip.
Look behind you! A Three-headed Masterpiece!
