Having completed full perfects on all of chapter 1, I unfortunately can't recommend this game to anyone who has ever played a rhythm game, is currently playing a rhythm game, or plans on playing a rhythm game. There's a strange balance in the issues I found in the 4 levels of chapter 1: one level which was great and had no issues, one level with a minor issue, one level with a somewhat major issue, and one level with an issue that ruined my game experience completely. Starting from the best level, 1-2 was good. It's nice. Moving on to a minor issue, 1-3 requires some really intense reaction times, but this gets better with practice (although it is saying something about the game that you need to memorize at least some of the pattern if you don't have really good reaction time). 1-4 has two issues, being the requirement to memorize the patterns and how rapidly they switch. The main gimmick of 1-4 is that there are 2 (technically 3 including the pattern for the switching between the patterns) patterns, and you need to play one of them based on the background. The complete lack of visual cues for what the patterns are in each section is already somewhat problematic, but this issue really solves itself with practice. The patterns aren't that complex (at least in 1-4, I stopped after seeing 2-1 for reasons you'll see in a bit). The main issue is that the game switches between the two patterns every 5 seconds or so (the time interval is pretty much random), and you need to keep track of which state you're on. There needs to be a better visual indicator for this. No, the sun and moon rotating in the background doesn't count, because by the time you can barely see the corner of the sun / moon and process it, you've already missed a note. The visual cue should be visible, preferably large, and instant. As someone who spent around 30~40 minutes trying to perfect 1-4, I spent much of my time looking at the rate indicator (the one that switches between perfect / fast / slow / miss), so I'd suggest making the drum (which is right above the rate indicator) change color based on the current state. But if those were the only issues, I would've recommended the game. I honestly really enjoyed the 30~40 minutes I spent trying to perfect 1-4. Unfortunately, there's 1-1. The first level of the game, and the reason I started writing this review. 1-1 is a disaster. Right as you start playing, you might feel that something feels off. And you might not figure out why. Here's the issue: the animation (and sound) for shaking the bottle has two stages: moving the bottle down, and moving it up. When you press the down arrow to shake the bottle, the bottle starts moving downwards, and the sound starts. However, the bulk of the sound is at the start of the stage where the bottle is moving up, about a quarter of a beat after the key press. This makes the sync feel off, because the sound does not match the key press at all. This is completely contradictory to how every rhythm game works, and you need to rebuild your senses to specifically ignore the discrepancy between your key press and the game's reaction. Throughout the entire 1-1 experience, there's a voice in your head screaming that the sync feels completely off, and you need to ignore it. The sound for tossing the water has the same issue, despite the animation only having one stage (tossing the water). This is the largest problem with the game right now, and it's the reason I didn't play beyond 1-4. 2-1 presumably has the same issue, and rebuilding your senses is not fun nor something that should be required for a rhythm game.
This game is.... a mixed bag to me. It has some parts at which it does overperform for its genre. However, it also falls flat at multiple aspects, which are better translated in other Rhythm games. First to the bad stuff: The minigames are partly repeating themselves a lot (especially the guitar and the water shaking minigames), while other minigames just appear once and never come back again. About that: It is in general ok to repeat a minigame, but doing that more than once and just on specific games feels pretty cheap and forced sadly. Moreover, some kind of bigger challenge in form of a Remix / Mixtape / Mashup of multiple minigames is missing, which could have easily included more content to the game, while also enhancing the difficulty over time without anyone complaining about it. Moreover, some of the rhythm patterns, especially at the guitar minigame, are so long and specific, that it can easily catch you off and frustate you a lot more. Keep things simple enough and understandable while learning the patterns, but make it hard when trying to master it, dear developers! Please do not make it hard from the beginning on. It just erases the fun and motivation to play through this game. Now to the good parts of the game: The artstyle, the amount of characters and their character designs are DEFINITELY dragging the rest of the game up a lot in my personal final ranking for this game. It has a specific artstyle, like Melatonine, but does not limit its potentials. With this, we get to see so many cool character designs, who mainly show up in Minigames, but are also partly so adorable and funny (just like in Rhythm Heaven). Moreover, the minigames, that have not a struggling rhythm pattern, are mostly simple and fun minigames. Especially the Volleyball minigame and the watter bottle minigame are so fun to play through. The music is also good, but not amazing. To further add to the positive aspects: This game has a story and it is not spammed full of unskippable text bubbles like Rhythm Heaven Megamix. Moreover, the second half of the story is relatively interesting, although the story is pretty bare bones. If you are a fan of Rhythm Games: You might like this one, but it will feel way different to the usual structure of a rhythm game. Also, you might pay attention to the price for the amount of playing time you will probably get. Not my full recommendation from my side here, but if you are desperate for a new Rhythm game while waiting for other upcoming Rhythm games or just like games with pretty artstyles: This game is the way to go. My rating: 6,75/10
Visuals are really nice, looks very Puyo Puyo like. but onto what you SHOULD know, Like most other people this game appealed to me because it looks a lot like Rhythm Heaven (gameplay wise). Yes it is the same in the way that you are playing a mini game to the beat of music, where Pastel Parade falls flat is the music part. Sadly the most important part of the game. There isn't anything that I would go out of my way to listen to again which sucks. I wont be comparing this game to others as I don't think that is really fair but there are others out there that have original songs I still listen to. Secondly the amount of mini games, this is where is the music couldn't keep me the variety of mini games would get me through the rest of the game. Well I made it to the 4th world and I was for the 4th time greeted by water mini game that is from world 1, stage 1. I am not asking for a whole set of new mini games every world (which isn't a lot to ask of for a SOMETIMES 3 key music game) but the reuse of mini games is excessive. Lastly the story I'll be honest I skipped, I don't really look too much for a story in a rhythm game unless the story is being conveyed through the music or gameplay/visuals in some way (For this I will give a cool example, that being Dead As Disco), but I nothing against having the story there for people who want it. I wanna like the game but cant due to so many things feeling like they are missing.
I will recommend this game because i really enjoyed a large part of it but there's some flaws too that need to be addressed (in this game or in a sequel that i will love to see) - There's various mini games but some of them just feel like the same mini game and his mechanic but with different skin, making the game feel like a little bit repetitive. - Continuing about mini games, each one has like 2 or 3 more music variants, wich i think it's ok, but i will love to see a new mini game with that music. - The timing in some mini games are a bit strange, specially in those where you need to press buttons continously and the rythm changes, wich can cost you a perfect score. - And finally i think the worst flaw is the lack of visual/sound cues for certain situacions, a lot of songs, specially the harder ones, requires several tries to remember the tricky parts and even knowing them are coming can be a little bit tricky to get it well, like the ones where every character before you react in chain to the music so fast without any clue of what is coming. Even on normal dificulty songs this kind of thing just "happens" without any indication Despite this flaws i enjoyed the game, the main songs where all great (except for 1 or 2) and the 2nd and 3rd songs area great challenge, and still recommend because the art is great, the characters are lovable, and the music is catchy. Also it provides a great challenge if you are searching for a rythm heaven inspired game but a little bit harder. I will give it a 8/10
